. You're reading this because you're considering the Sony HTA5000 soundbar for your widescreen tv and maybe you're wondering if the soundbar alone is enough. It's not. Buy this. You won't regret it. To be clear, though this review focuses on the Sony SASW3 wireless subwoofer, it's impossible to consider it out of context of the total Sony ecosystem as it is designed to wirelessly work with that and as far as I can tell, only that. In the past Sony in fact bundled their systems together, but apparently folks were not convinced they wanted all of it. So I am comparing the Sony ecosystem ($999 HTA5000 soundbar, $349 SARS3S sides, and SASW3 subwoofer $399) to my current discontinued Sonos system, in particular the (sonos soundbar, originally $899, and two play 3's for sides, $598 total, and Sonos Sub gen 2 $749). Is it fair to compare a $399 subwoofer to a $749 one, or a $1747 system to a discontinued system that was originally $2246? Maybe not. But. UPSIDE: But this subwoofer blows my original system out of the water. So there is that. In my modest sized family room, you FEEL the punch of this modestly priced subwoofer much more than I expected. If movies are your thing, especially action movies, you need this subwoofer. Not sure why you would hesitate unless you are integrating with an existing system. But even then, you really need to consider the SASW3. It was by far the most impressive part of the system to me. It delivered strong bass response and impressive explosions when called upon. It compliments the Sony soundbar amazingly well. Let's discuss setup. Plug it in to a power outlet. Hit the power button. Done. Connects to the soundbar wirelessly. It then prompts you to update the software. And don't forget to do a sound optimization in the set up menu. I found that key for my room. DOWNSIDE?: To be clear, this is a television sound system. The subwoofer rocks the roof, but it's not the smoothest for music only. That's where the Sonos beats it. And.. I don't know about you but I am over different physical remotes for things. Much prefer the app based Sonos system for control. BUT, and it's a big but.. if all you want is a television sound system, the only time you will need the physical remote is changing settings, which might only be on set up depending on how much you like to fine tune things or to turn it on to use with your portable devices. The Sony system has Chromecast, Alexa, and Apple Airplay 2 built in, but unlike the Sonos system, the Sony system always activates the TV to operate. Not a plus in my book. But your mileage may vary. All in all, as a subwoofer for a television sound system for watching movies, 5 stars is not enough. If your priority is music, you need to balance your options.

Hi NoWoof, We are sorry to hear that you had issues with your SASW3 subwoofer. If you still have the unit, we'd love to help out and troubleshoot the issue. Press SW + or BASS + on the remote control of a compatible model to increase the subwoofer volume.
Make sure that the power indicator on the subwoofer is lit in green.
If the power indicator on the subwoofer does not light, try the following.
      – Make sure the AC power cord (mains lead) of the subwoofer is connected properly.
      – Press (power) of the subwoofer to turn on the power.
If the power indicator on the subwoofer flashes slowly in green or lights in red, try the following.
      – Move the subwoofer to a location near a compatible model so that the power indicator on the subwoofer lights in green.
      – Follow the steps in “If the Connection is not Established Automatically.” on the link below

I have Sony XBR-75X850D 4K TV with Sony AT-5000 soundbar. Using this subwoofer with both Sonny AT-5000 soundbar and 2 Sony rear RS3S speaker will rock your movie watching experience. One of the things that impressive me was the set up. Since this is a wireless subwoofer, I was originally skeptical about the initial set up and the wireless connection. But the subwoofer connected wirelessly to sound bar as soon as I plug the power cord to the wall. You can let the system automatically set up the subwoofer and the soundbar but there is also option to do it manually. I am not sure how easy or how difficult the manual process is, since I chose the automatic set up. You also have the option to increase the volume of the subwoofer directly from the remote if you connect this to Sony soundbard A5000. It’s supposed to work with A700 as well. From my experience, even when you maximize the subwoofer volume, there is no distortion in the sound.

This subwoofer was an afterthought addition to a new Bravia 8 television, along with an open-box HT-A8000 soundbar and open-box SA-RS3S wireless rear speakers. The sound performance of the television was absolutely elevated and transformed to another level, with the addition of this speaker system. System configuration was only slightly difficult, but worth it. The thing that I like best about this subwoofer is that it only kicks in when appropriate, and that it does not constantly overwhelm with thump or bass...it performs logically, according to the broadcast! I would highly recommend the Sony home theater setup, if your budget allows.

      Hi JohnG,

We are excited to hear that the SA-SW3 is bringing that authentic movie theater rumble right into your home!

There is nothing quite like feeling the vibrations of a deep bassline or a powerful cinematic explosion to truly pull you into the story. We engineered this subwoofer to deliver tight, impactful low frequencies that add a physical dimension to your audio. Knowing that it’s providing that immersive "theater feeling" you were looking for is exactly what we love to hear.

Thank you for trusting Sony to bring the theater experience to your living room!

      Hi AnnK,

Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We are thrilled to hear that the SA-SW3 is bringing that authentic theater energy into your home for movies and big game days.

This subwoofer is designed specifically to fill in the 'gaps' that standard speakers can't reach. By adding 200W of deep bass, it allows your main soundbar to focus more on clear dialogue and high-frequency details, while the sub handles the heavy lifting of rumbling explosions or the roar of a stadium crowd.

Because it uses a 160mm driver and a specialized Sigma Magnetic Circuit, you get deep, punchy bass without the distortion that often comes with high volumes. Plus, the wireless connectivity ensures that the sound remains perfectly synced with your screen, so you never miss a beat of the action.

      Regards,
      Dominick Sony_US

I got this to pair up with my Sony HT-A5000 sound bar to make it a 5.2.2 sound system. The soundbar already has a small internal subwoofer that is pretty good, but with the SA-SW3 it turns a 7.5/10 bass quality into a 20/10 bass quality. It really kicks up the deep impacting bass from movies and games. The set up is easy just plug it in and push the power button, once the light turns green it's paired. I like it and am happy to have it as part of my home theater.
