Seamless and Thunderous Addition to A7000 Soundbar

Sony's new HT-A7000 soundbar is great on its own, but there's no denying the benefits of a discrete, standalone subwoofer. Sony has introduced two options of wireless subwoofers to pair with the A7000: the more compact 200W SW3 subwoofer, and this 300W SW5 subwoofer, which is an absolute beast. If you have the room (and cash) to spare, the SW5 subwoofer is an essential add-on for the A7000 soundbar. === SETUP AND CONFIGURATION (5 Stars) === The soundbar connects wirelessly to the A7000, so all you need to do is plug it into a power outlet. Even though the A7000 is sold separately, it pairs instantly and automatically with the soundbar. All I had to do was turn on the soundbar, then plug in the SW5 to a power outlet, and wait for the light on the front of the subwoofer to turn green. Within about 5 seconds, the subwoofer was paired with the soundbar and I was ready to go. If you have trouble connecting the subwoofer automatically, you can attempt a manual connection through the settings menu (Home > Setup > Advanced Settings > Speaker Settings > Wireless Speaker Settings > Start Manual Linking). Once paried, the soundbar turns on and off with the soundbar. A solid red light on the front indicates that the subwoofer is off ("standby mode"). A solid green light means that it is on and connected to your soundbar. Once successfully paired, I recommend running the "sound field optimization" wizard again from the settings menu. === DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY (5 Stars) === This is a large, bulky subwoofer, but luckily it has a very premium design. It weighs over 28 pounds and is about 16 inches high, 11 inches wide, and 16.5 inches deep. So it will certainly take up a sizeable chunk of your living room floor. The sides of the SW5 are wrapped in a textured leather-like material that is very soft and fingerprint resistant. The mesh on the front of the subwoofer blends in seamlessly with that of the A7000. The base of the subwoofer is a glossy black that adds a nice bit of contrast from the rest of the unit. === SOUND QUALITY (5 Stars) === Simply put, the sound produced from this subwoofer is absolutely thunderous and takes an already excellent soundbar to new heights. The volume of the subwoofer can be adjusted on the soundbar's remote control. Anything above a level 4 or 5 seems like overkill for my setup. Even at higher levels, there I have not noticed any distortion at all. It produces, clean, crisp, punchy bass, appearing to reach very low frequencies that lesser subwoofers simply can't touch. I watched the 4K disc of Mad Max: Fury Road (one of my demo discs for low-frequency effects) immediately after installing the A7000 and SW5 subwoofer. I can safely say that watching this movie with the SW5 is the best I have ever heard it, and I have owned quite a few subwoofers over the years. The SW5 is undoubtedly one of the best subwoofers designed to be used with a soundbar, but it might be overkill for those with smaller living rooms or in apartment/townhome settings. I haven't had a chance to test the smaller, 200W SW3 subwoofer, but I would encourage those with smaller setups or less demanding audio requirements to look at that model. === OVERALL === I won't go so far as to call this subwoofer a "must-own" if you have Sony's A7000 soundbar. The soundbar on its own is truly exceptional. But if you are serious about your home theater setup and getting the best possible sound from a seamless and easy-to-use system, then the SW5 subwoofer is a no-brainer. It is certainly expensive, but it's clear that Sony is targeting the premium audio market with its new line of soundbars and subwoofers. The SW5 is priced in line with its closest competitors and, in my opinion, offers unmatched design, sound, and ease of use. Part of me is upset that Sony did not bundle a subwoofer with the purchase of the A7000 soundbar. On the other hand, there's no way they could have included a subwoofer of this caliber and kept the price competitive. I appreciate the modular nature of the A7000, allowing users to add subwoofers and speakers if they so choose. I'm confident that the SW5 is going to provide many hours and years of home theater enjoyment. Highly recommended!

Bought subwoofer to pair with a Sony HT-A 5000 sound bar. Adds a really nice full sound to the watching experience. The subwoofer would make an intermittent popping / clicking noise when listening at louder volumes. Searched the internet for a fix but none worked. Exchanged for a bother unit at Best Buy and new subwoofer is not exhibiting the same issue. Fingers crossed it stays this way.

I bought this product as "Excellent Open Box" condition from Best Buy. According to their terms, it should work and look like new and include all original parts and packaging. What I received was far from it. The product arrived with obvious signs of wear, and all the manuals and documentation were missing. The product works fine, but Best Buy's handling of open box items is very inconsistent. The received product is clearly heavily used and is out of terms and conditions for what I'd expect after paying considerably more for "Excellent" compared to "Good" or "Fair" conditions. Those top and side stains look like a failed attempt at cleaning the product by their rep before shipping it out to me, and it only made whatever was on it before look worse. Now this outer layer of fake leather casing will have spots. Whoever OKed it to ship as excellent open box condition is incompetent

I’ve purchased the Sony A5000 Soundbar w/ The SW5 Subwoofer and The RS3S Rear Speakers on 7/9/23. When the Soundbar arrived I noticed a slight dent in the front of the metal display case causing it to warp unevenly. 6 day’s later, The SW5 Subwoofer started to give a base popping sound as if the woofer was gonna burst. I only keep the Sun at Vol.9, and the Soundbar at 38/39. I went to the home button on the remote to the RF option to optimize the 360 sound check, after it completed, the popping sound continued. I turned it off and on, still no help. The Left RS3S Rear speakers had a crackling shortage sound as well. Overall, dissatisfaction. Defective product.

Hi LemarA, We are sorry to hear that the SASW5 has a popping sound. This is definitely not the experience we'd like you to have. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem.

In the meantime, please try the following:
If there is a device nearby that generates electromagnetic waves, such as a wireless LAN or a microwave oven in use, locate the subwoofer and a compatible model apart from it.
If there is an obstacle between the subwoofer and a compatible model, move or remove it.
Locate the subwoofer and a compatible model as close as possible.
Change the [RF Channel] setting to [Off], and then change to [On] again.
Switch the network connection of the TV or Blu-ray Disc player from wireless to wired.
Change the [Wireless Playback Quality] setting to [Connection].

    A "Must-Have" for the Sony HT-A7000 Soundbar

The Sony SA-SW5 is Sony's latest flagship subwoofer for the HT-A7000 soundbar or the Sony HT-A9 4-speaker set. This subwoofer comes with a power cable & paperwork. The subwoofer comes with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty. Rather than go over ALL the specs which you can already find on this Bestbuy.com page, I'll try to give more observations of those specs instead. DISCLAIMER: I have all 3 components for the complete surround experience: 1) HT-A7000 7.1.2ch Soundbar 2) SA-SW5 300W Subwoofer (Review for this product) 3) SA-RS3S Wireless Rear Speakers for the HT-A7000 PROS: ----------- * Deep, rich, submersive bass * Easy connectivity to the Sony HT-A7000 soundbar. * Wired connections are super easy - power cable only. * It connects to the soundbar as part of the soundbar setup via Bluetooth (BT). No issues, simple interface and hookup. * It has a down-firing and front-firing driver with open ports on the bottom on every side allowing for 360-degree bass emmitance. * I watched 2 online movies in 4K - The Tomorrow War (Amazon) and Zack Snyder's Justice League (HBO Max). Both featured surround sound and both impressed with immersion experience. I felt like I was in the middle of the action (with the sub and wireless speakers setup included). The explosions really came to life with the use of this sub. The chairs/couch vibrate like you're there in the middle of the action - only a sub can really do that. CONS: ----------- * It can only be used with specific "other" Sony products. It can't be used as a standalone sub for an amplifier system. OTHER OBSERVATIONS: ----------- * It's a beast of a sub weighing in at nearly 30 lbs. * When the main soundbar is turned off, the subwoofer is automatically turned off as well. * When the sub is ON, the LED on the front bottom of the unit turns GREEN. When the sub is OFF, it turns RED. CONCLUSION: ===================== The concept of this product is simple - provide deep, rich bass sound to music and movies. It does just that with simplicity. 300W of power goes a long way when you want your room to come alive. I believe the sub is a must-have for any soundbar, a priority ahead of rear wireless speakers. You won't be disappointed with this sub. It gives you want you want in the low frequency range. Nice work, Sony. (I did reviews for the other 2 products in this line as well if you enjoyed this review.)

I got the subwoofer setup and paired with the HT-A5000 and Sony rear wireless speakers, this is the first time I personally got a subwoofer that was separate from the soundbar in a retail package. Packages like that are a good value, but I haven't had an included sub that matches the power of this wireless sub! I game and watch movies primarily on my TV with the occasional music, and I was pleased with my old soundbar and sub until I set this up. I really enjoy watching movies with this because the bass is at a level that gives a much more cinema sound and feel at home. The setup was straight forward on my HT-A5000, I got everything plugged in and powered on, when I got to the step to add additional speakers to my soundbar it automatically detected my subwoofer and updated it's firmware. This sub has some heft to it, and is really solid, a really well built product! I was recently rewatching Scott Pilgrim and the impact of the subwoofer on the fighting and the bass during the band segments was amazing, got my brother to comment on the overall sound of this subwoofer in the setup. I am looking forward to picking up some UHD movies over the holidays to take full advantage of this subwoofer and sound system!

Review: Sony SA-SW5 300W Wireless Subwoofer The Sony SA-SW5 300W Wireless Subwoofer is a powerful audio accessory that aims to enhance your home theater or audio setup. As a wireless subwoofer, it offers the convenience of easy placement and eliminates the need for messy cables. Having had the opportunity to test and evaluate this subwoofer, I'd like to share my thoughts and impressions. First and foremost, the SA-SW5 boasts an impressive 300W power output, delivering deep and impactful bass frequencies. Whether you're watching an action-packed movie or listening to your favorite music, this subwoofer adds a new dimension to the audio experience. It effectively reproduces low frequencies, creating a rich and immersive soundstage that can truly elevate your entertainment. Setting up the SA-SW5 is a breeze, thanks to its wireless connectivity. Simply connect it to your audio system using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and you're good to go. This wireless feature not only reduces cable clutter but also provides the flexibility to place the subwoofer anywhere in the room for optimal bass response. This is particularly useful if you have limited space or if you prefer a clean and minimalist setup. The design of the SA-SW5 is sleek and modern, with a compact form factor that allows it to blend seamlessly into any décor. The build quality is solid, and the subwoofer feels robust and well-constructed. It comes in a black finish that adds a touch of elegance to its appearance. In terms of sound performance, the SA-SW5 delivers a satisfying low-end response. The bass is deep and punchy, adding weight and impact to explosions, rumbling engines, and musical beats. It integrates well with the main speakers, providing a balanced audio output. The subwoofer also features adjustable controls for volume and crossover frequency, allowing you to fine-tune the bass to your preferences and room acoustics. One notable feature of the SA-SW5 is its compatibility with Sony's digital sound processing technologies, such as Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) and ClearAudio+. These technologies work together to optimize the audio signal and enhance the overall sound quality. They can help improve the clarity and detail of compressed audio files, ensuring that you get the best possible sound regardless of the source material. However, it's worth noting that the SA-SW5 is designed as a dedicated subwoofer and does not include built-in speakers for full-range audio reproduction. This means that you'll need to pair it with a separate audio system or speakers to enjoy a complete audio setup. While this may be a minor inconvenience, it allows you the flexibility to choose the main speakers that best suit your preferences and requirements. In conclusion, the Sony SA-SW5 300W Wireless Subwoofer is a commendable audio accessory that brings deep and impactful bass to your home theater or audio setup. Its wireless connectivity, powerful performance, and sleek design make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts and casual users alike. If you're looking to enhance your audio experience with immersive and thunderous bass, the SA-SW5 is definitely worth considering.

I got this sub to go along with the A7000 soundbar, and it replaced a Sonos system with the room shaking subwoofer. I did not think I could get better sound and deeper bass, but I did! The A7000 sounds amazing on it's own, but adding the subwoofer along with the rears, is a mindblowing upgrade. This is a heavy, heavy sub, unlike the lightweight ones that come with most soundbars. This is worthy of the price. Setup was as easy as setting up the rears, plug it in, hit the link button and run through the connection process on the soundbars tv menu. You can adjust the sub's output on the soundbars remote control. I picked a movie that has Dolby Atmos, and let the fun begin. Thankfully, I live on the first floor of my condo complex, otherwise I would have to keep the volume down. The bass is booming on this sub, shaking the room just the right amount. As i turned it up louder and louder, my smile got bigger and bigger. I know the A7000 comes with a hefty price tag, but if you're going to invest in a new home theater system, adding this subwoofer is a must, you won't regret it!

I guess the real thing you need to ask yourself is do you need more bass out of your Sony HT A5000 soundbar. There is a pretty decent amount of bass in the A5000, especially if you are putting these into a smaller room. If you are, you may want to wait and see if you are ok with just the soundbar. In my opinion, you might be ok without additional bass in smaller rooms, but you really should buy the optional rear surrounds, regardless of room size. Now, if you are an absolute action/fx movie and show fan, you will not be disappointed. This is A LOT OF bass!! I tried a few Dolby Atmos movies / shows, and Venom Carnage was the first movie I tried. Wow.. that is all I can say. The lows were really boomy on bass hits, explosions, etc. I actually had to turn the levels on this subwoofer down a bit, and I am a bass head. I played a few PlayStation 5 games too, mostly Resident Evil Village, and it really made the sub go off a lot. Keep in mind this subwoofer is pretty big, as subwoofers all are, but subwoofers do not have to be placed next the tv. They can be tucked away somewhere else in the room. They are what are known as omnidirectional speakers. We have ours moved to the side by our sofa. Must for action movie and show fans that love that bass!

Purchased this together with the Sony HT-A5000 soundbar. After having it for a week together with the soundbar, THIS is the perfect compliment to it!! Even though the HT-A5000 soundbar has decent bass, I was so glad I purchased this subwoofer at the same time. The bass is very good, especially at the lower end and setup was easy to navigate!! Watching a movie or listening to music really brings out the low bass and it doesn't sound distorted at all. Sony does make a smaller sub, the SA-SW3, at a lower price point, but in my opinion spring a little more cash and get THIS sub the SA-SW5, unless maybe you have smaller living spaces. Again the bigger sub is room filling and just makes more sense, especially for those who love big bass!! Again the Sony SA-SW5 is a great compliment to one of Sony's soundbars!!

    Worth it over the SW3

I had the pleasure of owning the SW3 for 2+ years before it stopped powering on. I used it both on the HT-A9 and then eventually the Quads. I debated replacing it with the same subwoofer but the SW5 was on sale at the time. I didn't expect much but I did know it would be an upgrade. What an upgrade it turned out to be! The SW3 could get pretty loud and the SW5 obviously can get just as loud and maybe a bit louder at our average viewing volume. However, the precision at the higher volumes is such a big difference. I lived with the muddy loose low end sounds of the SW3 for a while attributing it to the room acoustics or being on the hardwood floor, etc. Certainly some of that was in play but when I put the SW5 in the same place it was a world of difference. Clean and punchy even on crappy cable box coax signals. Thunderous and booming on Atmos streams. Next level stuff for the sale price range ($499) when watching discs. If you're buying a new bar or the quads budget in the SW5 and don't hesitate if its on sale or you get a good bundle price.
