Hi, Lilman28, I'm sorry that your portable speaker does not work. You can reset the speaker by opening the cap on the rear side and pushing the RESET button with a pin or other pointed object. The speaker will reset and turns off and on automatically.

It has bass for sure, and you will like it. It does not hit as hard as a big speaker, but for the size it's really impressive. Price is a little high, but it's worth it.

Regarding the Sony SRS-XB12 I purchased from BB with curbside pickup. First off it is very small, smaller than I thought from the pictures. About half the size of a can of coke (height). I use this as an desktop PC speaker. I just wanted something without wires that I could hear youtubes and spotify. I am not an audiophile I just like to hear some music in the background and do research on products I buy on youtube. Sound is OK but where this product really shines is that it easily connects via bluetooth just by pressing the power button. My previous speaker you had to jump through hoops to connect to bluetooth, such as remove then add the device, pair and start over if it did not connect. Not an issue here. Listen, power on. Stop listening power off, I never have to touch any bluetooth settings or controls it just works 100% of the time and sound if good for a palm size speaker.

Great size and decent quality. I use for low profile music play back on my desk and appreciate the size for minimal space taken with good volume.

Volume isn’t super loud but it is indeed a small speaker. However, the bass response is surprisingly good for a speaker this size. The passive radiator on the bottom of the unit seems to do a good job accentuating the bass response. I like that the grill is made of metal and the overall build quality is nice and solid so using it for outdoor activities like camping should be good to go. Controls are easy to use and I like the fact that it has a facility for a 3.5mm audio in. At first I was a bit disappointed that the strap/lanyard attachment was not a button. Rather, you have to slide the strap out sideways with a notch in the strap. But the benefit of this is that there is basically zero risk that would become detached with a hard pull on the speaker. So it is slightly less convenient than a button or snap closure, but it will be extremely secure.

    Just Barely Average

Basically, it’s a cute little speaker. I like the “rubberized” texture of the speaker’s surface, which makes gripping the speaker if your hands are wet far easier and more secure. There is also a circular rubberized ring on the bottom of the speaker which helps keep it staying put where you place it when on a smooth surface. A feature which stood out to me was that the grill over the top of the speaker appears to be made of plastic. I’d rather it was a metal grate. Since this speaker is designed to be portable, and useful in a variety of outdoor activities, along with possibly being transported in a backpack, other things could get jostled against the speaker and cause the plastic grate to get broken. Pressing the - + volume controls felt clunky, and there seemed to be a short delay. At full volume the sound quality began to suffer. And you’ll need to have the volume turned up to at least 75% for any sort of decent sound. Another downside was that I didn’t really notice any “Extra Bass” much at all. On the plus side though, charging took a shorter amount of time than the instructions stated, and pairing the speaker to my iPhone was nearly instantaneous it was so fast. The detachable strap was a nice addition to include with the speaker, too. I would recommend this little speaker if you have a particular use for it, and if it’s the only option for you with regards to cost. It’s wireless, portable, compact, dust resistant and ‘waterproof’; and because it’s made by Sony, you know the overall build quality is there. Just realize what you’re getting and don’t expect it to perform as well as one of their pricier bluetooth speakers.

Easily paired with my iPad and iPhone. Very portable. I am not familiar with the XB10. It doesn’t seem like there is that much difference between the old and new model to justify a $20.00 increase. But the sound is great. I am very satisfied with my purchase

Big design flaw - can't use while charging if low

At first I was pretty happy with the sound and the bass was great, but then I discovered a major design flaw. When the battery light starts flashing (which happens after about 5 hrs, not 11 like they say!) the volume gets very low. What is super annoying is that you cannot just plug it in and keep playing. It has to be TURNED OFF AND CHARGED before the volume gets normal again. Seriously?!. I contacted support and they ended up sending me a new one and it did the same thing. Then I googled and found an article https://helpguide.sony.net/speaker/srs-xb12/v1/en/contents/TP0002133463.html It says it will happen when 'played loud' and yes, I chose this specifically since it seemed like it would have good volume so would like the option to play it loud and at least to be able to just plug it in and keep listening while it charges. Why support didn't just tell me about that article I don't know. But This is a major design flaw! I am very unhappy with it for this reason and think it was a waste of $. I wish they would give me an exchange for another model.

Hi Megan, Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of your XB12. We are sorry for any inconvenience you experienced. We appreciate your feedback about the volume that gets very low. This is not a malfunction. When you use the speaker at a loud volume for a long time, the built-in battery may run low even if the speaker is connected to an AC outlet or a booted computer. As a result, sound becomes low. One of the safety features it possesses the ability to limit its volume when the battery is critically low. This protects the speaker and its circuits from damage. It is one of the reasons our speakers last so long. Hope this helps and thank you for choosing Sony! -Sam Sony_US
