For a portable, Bluetooth speaker, the Sony XB22 has great sound and is quite robust. I compared it to my JBL Charge which is a few years old now but has been the go-to in the house for external speaker. Both my wife and I preferred the sound of the new Sony XB22 and it did indeed provide more bass than the JBL could muster. I was a little disappointed with the bass but that is making an unfair comparison to much bigger and far more expensive speakers that we have in the house. As this is the most portable and the simplest to link up to, it already seems to be better than what we were looking to upgrade. The unit has been designed to work indoors and outdoors and is supposedly waterproof, shock proof and can survive pool parties and beach trips - even sand is supposedly not going to get inside under normal operating conditions. This gives it a huge advantage over many other Bluetooth speakers, in addition to its superior sound (at least compared to our JBL). The speaker has two built-in lights that can be set to off, on or flashing in time to the music. I found the lights to vaguely follow the beat but for long term use, I would likely just turn this feature off. Settings for lights, sound etc. are controlled through the Sony Music Center app you download to your phone/tablet. I already had the app for another Sony speaker and it is easy to pair the new speaker via the app and Bluetooth settings on your device. A feature I was scratching my head over is the Party Booster - a less fun version of Bop-it! that is built in. You can activate the default settings for Drum Kit and Percussion or customize from the library of provided sounds which let you pick up the speaker and tap along with the instrument(s) of your choice while it plays. The sound you hear depends on which part of the speaker you tap and how hard you hit it will define how strong the sound is. If you thought a song needed more cowbell, you literally can add it yourself. The unit didn't seem responsive enough to get a consistent beat out of and I concluded it would be something I would prefer not to hear at any parties I attend. I'd be interested to see what demographic this is aimed at and the research that suggests it as a desirable feature as I can't put my finger on it. The speaker can be linked with up to 100 other similar Sony devices in what is called "Wireless Party Chain",so that they play the tracks in synch as well as matching light patterns, if that feature is turned on. Superfluous features aside, my wife and I were both impressed with the sound and the extra bass function certainly did add a little for such a small and portable speaker. It will be our goto mini speaker for indoor and outdoor use from now on.

It wouldn’t stay connected to my MacBook, I would have to shut down the computer and restart several times a day to get it to connect. Also the sound level was inconsistent.

Poor battery life, unstable connection if others have their bluetooth on and are within range, volume could be louder, I will be replacing it soon.

The Sony SRS-XB22 hits the mark on portability and battery life, but is rather lacking in sound quality and build design. The metal grille is a step back from last years XB21 lineup, and will be less durable that the poly-carbonate finish of last years model. The battery is fantastic, but the bass falls flat and other speakers in the same price range can deliver much more volume and bass. Overall this is a great speaker, but find it on sale!

My old speaker was slowly dying, so it was either this or the UE Wonderboom. I have a Sony GTK-XB7, so that made me want to go more to the Sony side of things. Man, does this thing sound great! Tons of bass and volume for its size. The live sound mode is great too. It feels rugged, it's waterproof, and it floats. Highly recommended! Sony makes great speakers, will definitely be getting more.

This bluetooth speaker sounds good. It has the usual connectivity (bluetooth and aux-in) and also includes NFC. Paring was simple and straight-forward, and the controls work like most bluetooth headphones (where the play/pause button also allows you to skip to the next track or play the previous). I found the cylindrical shape and surprisingly small size to be perfect. While it can also be stood vertically, a horizontal orientation makes it almost like a mini sound bar. So how does it sound? Very full and rich. However, despite the "Extra Bass" in its name, I didn't find the bass to be that heavy or accented. Instead it seemed very balanced with the song samples I played - though slightly muffed. At mid-range volume level the output was very pleasant, but at higher volume ranges (particularly its max level) I heard much more treble with a tiny bit of distortion. Of course this may vary with the source music - and also the ill-advised action of using such a device at maximum volume in the first place. This speaker can fill a small to medium room, but for a big crowd, that's where its Wireless Party Chain feature comes in handy. Why suffer with just one of these speakers when you can have multiple synched up? Finally, the Live Sound feature really brings a presence to the media I play through this speaker, and it's my preferred mode. It just sounds so good!
