With this speaker, you can enjoy deep, punchy sounds wherever you like with your EXTRA BASS. To switch the sound effect from EXTRA BASS mode to STAMINA mode, press and hold the BATT (battery)/STAMINA button for about 3 seconds. To get the sound that you prefer, please try the different sound modes found in the Sony Music Center app. There is even an EQ in there—which can be customized to fine-tune your music to your liking. If you haven't yet, you can also test this with a different source to confirm the issue. Depending on the music, the EXTRA BASS effects may not be so noticeable. To switch the sound effect from STAMINA mode to EXTRA BASS mode, press and hold the BATT (battery)/STAMINA button for about 3 seconds. The STAMINA indicator will turn off and the sound effect will be switched back to EXTRA BASS mode.

12 hours: Volume level of the unit set to 34, the sound mode set to STAMINA.

Really enjoying this speaker

I have been using it the last few days and love the sound quality while outside. The base is good and the sound is crisp. Setting up Bluetooth between my phone and speaker took less then a minute and it was good to go. Battery life has also been really good. Overall I am really happy with this speaker. I am going to buy a 2nd speaker to pair and have a surround sound.

Please make sure you have downloaded the Sony Music Center app.
Try out some of the preset sound settings and see what you like.
If all else fails, there is even an EQ for further fine-tuning.
Also, ensure you have charged the XB23 fully, and power the speaker off and then back on.
If the speaker gets too low it will limit the volume output to save the speaker from damage.
You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission. LDAC devices tend to sound the best.

To isolate your issue, please ensure that the EXTRA BASS function is turned on. Download the Sony Music Center app and go to [Settings] - [Sound] - [Sound Effect] - [EXTRA BASS]. If that is not BASS heavy enough, there is even an EQ so you can further boost the lower BASS frequency.
For good measure, please ensure at least one full charge and then power cycle the device. You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission.

Good Sound, Questionable Durability
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The Sony SRS-XB23 is a good, all-around Bluetooth speaker. It is compact and feels very solid. Relatively lightweight and easily portable. The sound is pretty midrange heavy despite the passive radiators it employs to boost the bass. When pushed hard the electronics clearly limit the low frequency output to keep the speaker from damaging itself. The speaker does a great job in the backyard while the kids are playing with water. It is easily loud enough to hear from 30' away and being waterproof (and salt water resistant if you are heading to the beach) I don't worry about it getting soaked. It also passes MIL-standard drop test so it should be pretty durable if it were to fall off a table even onto concrete (I didn't test that). It gets great battery life (~11 hours) at modest volume levels. I am seeing around 9 hours cranked up in my backyard. Another cool feature is the stereo pairing. I have this with my Sonos speakers and it is a great feature if you have more than one. You can spread them out and get a more traditional stereo sound. First time I have seen this on a portable, Bluetooth speaker. My one and only real caveat to the speaker are the exposed passive radiators at the top and bottom. It is a very strange design decision on Sony's part to build this little speaker as durable as possible and then give it an Achilles heel. My concerns could be completely unfounded, but exposing them just seems like asking for trouble. One unintentional hard poke or 'perfect' drop and that might spell the end of the already somewhat anemic bass performance. Again, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but they seem a bit too fragile. Overall, the Sony XB23 is a nice little Bluetooth speaker with respectable sound in a mostly durable package. Place it on your short list of BT speakers.

What I'm most impressed with is the the battery life. Sony says that you can get up to 12 hours of play time from it, 10, if you have Extra Bass on. I don't know if they were being conservative, or my unit has some sort of mutant battery, or something else, but with Extra Bass on at about medium volume I've gotten 11.5 hours of continuous play out of this thing twice now. Very very impressive. The only reason I didn't give this speaker 5 stars was because of the volume. It's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination, but I was expecting more than the max that this outputs. You wouldn't notice it so much inside, but the beauty of a battery-powered bluetooth speaker is the ability to take it out with you to parks, beaches, playgrounds, etc... Part of my testing took place in my backyard while my neighbors next door were having a family cookout. To be fair, they are a boisterous bunch, but I did find that even at max volume my music got somewhat lost in the mix when I more than a few feet away. I don't know if the low max volume is Sony's attempt at increased battery life or to prevent sound distortion from the small speakers, but it feels artificially low. Especially when you compare it to other speakers of it's size and even some that are smaller. All that said, I think it's a great value for the money and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality bluetooth speaker. I should also add that the stereo function is quite nice. You'll notice nice clean sound and definition in both channels, especially if you listen to a song such as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. It's a very cool feature that I wish more speakers had or did this well. Congrats to Sony on yet another quality offering!

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The Sony - SRS-XB23 Portable Bluetooth Speaker is pretty much just what it presented itself to be: A comfortably mobile Bluetooth speaker prepped for outside use, long battery life, and capable of producing volume beyond expectations. No complaints on any of these points. The only thing to keep in mind in getting this speaker is that it is for volume, decent base and impressive coverage. It is not for high fidelity sound. It has a nice solid sound, but there's a slight soft edge to the individual parts which increases to a (very slightly) muffled quality at high volume. When listening nearby, it makes a significant difference as to what part of the speaker is pointing towards you. This is not the case when it is placed further away. On the other hand, I would expect that you would experience a whole new level of quality by pairing 2 of these units together - one of it's added features.

This is something our music-loving customers appreciate most. That being said the unit also gets very loud for its size and audio precision.
We want to make sure you are getting the most out of your speaker. Please make sure you have downloaded the Sony Music Center app. There you will find all sorts of tools to fine-tune your SRSXB23 and maximize the volume to your liking. There is even an EQ.
Please make sure you fully charge the speaker, especially after it has gone below 10%, and hit the auto volume limiter (designed to keep your speaker safe). Then Increase the volume level of the wireless speaker and source devices.
You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission.
