I've had this speaker for a few days now and overall, I'm pretty impressed with it. The speaker has good sound for a setup of this size. I downloaded the Sony Music Center app for my iPhone and it allows for multiple customizations for sound and the light display. One of the cool features of this speaker is the party booster, which gives you the ability to kind of play along with the music. You can tap certain areas on the speaker and play a drum sound, high hat and various other instrumental sounds. It's kind of a cool feature that my kids and I have had fun with. I also like that I can play my music without using the app as well, although you do lose the party booster feature. The speaker also has the option of displaying a light show while playing music. You can change to several presets of lighting options as well as turn it off altogether to preserve battery life. It would have been cool if the lights play along with the beat, but it’s still a nice feature nonetheless. The Sony Music center app has internal settings for HBO GO, iHeartradio, Pandora, Spotify, YouTube and Vevo which opens up the apps and plays the audio back through the speaker. Not really that big of a deal since its paired through Bluetooth, but it saves you from having to close out of the Sony app and manually going to those apps to play the audio. I really only have two negatives about this speaker. The first is that it does not come with a power supply. It does come with a micro-USB cable, but you will need to find a power brick to recharge it. I was able to recharge it from the USB port on my MacBook though. The second might be user error, but when I initially paired my iPhone, I had no problems getting started. However, once I turned off the speaker and went back later to play music, I had to delete the device, re-pair it and then go through the setup process again. That was a tad bit frustrating, but it eventually paired the device. I also have a Lifeproof Aquaphonics AQ10, which I compared to this device. The Lifeproof is about $50 more, includes a charger and has a battery life of about 13 hours. It also has a small compartment that will store credit cards or an iPod. The Sony has an advertised battery life of 24hrs with the light show off. The quality of sound is on par with the Sony, but the Sony does have the ability to pair up to 100 additional speakers and create a surround sound or possibly a multi-room setup. Between these two devices, I would still go with the Sony only because for the $50 difference in price, I can add my own charging brick, I can go longer between charges and the party booster feature and light show is kind of cool for a portable speaker.

This is really nice. I can listen to my phone through this speaker and it sounds so good. I thought Bose was nice.

For the size, it does better than others on the market. Plays great even at higher levels. My parents were so impressed they went and bought one.

Speaker works great, no connection issues, great sound, LOVE the LED lights and the different variations of light styles you can use.

The sound on this product is great and it is lightweight and easily transported. The only draw back is that the cord is a bit short and cannot be plugged directly into an electrical outlet.

Bluetooth speaker has a great sound quality. It made no sense in spending twice as much other brands. Can't go wrong. Easy to operate.

The Sony SRS-XB31 is a solid compact speaker with an interesting cloth cover which gives it a unique feel unlike any of the others I have. The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box is the quality feel. The build and weight are very good but its not too heavy to carry around or hold in your hand. Pairing with my iPad was quick and the NFC paired with my phone simply by touching the phone to the speaker. The volume is impressive. At full volume, it fills my house and sounds clean even at max level. The lights are a nice touch but don’t seem to flash to the music, just to their own beat. I liked the white strobes behind the grill. Like many speakers today, there is an app and it is a must have. It allows you to change the sound profile, and light settings along with setting up the party mode. There are 3 preset sound profiles, standard, extra bass and live sound. There is also an equalizer to personalize the sound to your personal taste. The Party Booster feature allows you to tap the speaker in the front, sides, top and bottom to make different sounds, like a drum set or percussion. It’s a neat feature but not sure it will be used much. The harder you tap the unit the louder the sounds are. You have to tap it pretty hard to get any type of volume from it. Sounds great on paper but not sure about the execution. Perhaps if I were at a party with the 99 other speakers chained together it would be really cool. Battery life is rated at 24 hours without the lights. I’ve been listening to this speaker for several days and not had to charge it yet. There is also a USB port so you can charge your phone from the speaker. Its only 1 watt according to the specs but, hey, any port in a storm. The water proof part is really cool and definitely worth the price of admission. Needing to check it out, I dunked, well, really threw, this speaker in my hot tub, it floated back to the top and continued to work just fine. The fabric covering took a few minutes to dry completely but feel confident setting this pool side and not having to worry about it getting splashed. Overall, I am impressed with this speaker and recommend it to anyone looking for decent sound in a totally water proof housing.

Purchased for my son for Christmas. He has gotten so much use out of it. Absolutely great product!
