Absolutely love my Bluetooth speaker! It is small but has excellent quality

First off I like the design of the speaker compared to the previous model. It has a fabric mesh grill going around the speaker as opposed to a metal grill, though I got the white one it looks more like a silver and thats ok because it will look a lot less dirty as time goes on. It then has a light strip that wraps from the front of the speakers to its sides. Your usual set of controls are on top as well as NFC pairing.The backside has a waterproof cover which houses a usb port for charging your phone, mini usb for charging the speaker, audio in port, battery level button, an add button for adding additional speakers.On the bottom of the unit it also has 4 rubber feet. Sound quality is great it delivers punchy bass combined with low bass also. Download the Sony app and you some EQ settings you can adjust as well as light control. I like the ability to adjust the EQ although it's a little basic you still have some sort of adjustability if you dont like how the speaker sounds out the box. I've turned this thing to the max and it still sounds good with little distortion I just have to turn down the bass. The lighting really makes this speaker pop aesthetically, the light bar combined with two strobes at the end of the speaker really get you into the listening mood and if that's not your thing you can just turn it off. The speaker is also waterproof with an IP67 rating, dustproof and shockproof. It also have a party booster mode which enables you to tap the sides, top and face of the speaker while listening to music to add sound effects, seems a little gimmicky and personally do not use it, it may be fun for some though. Sony also claims it has a 24 hour battery life but have not tested it out for that long. This speaker easily fills my entire living room with sound and I love the bass coming out of this unit.

We've seen various "bass boost," "bass enhancer," whatever over the past 30 years or so of portable devices. I think they forgot what "bass" meant for the past 20 or so of those years. This one advertises, "extra bass," and they're not kidding. It's sitting on my desk right now as I type this, and I can feel the bass through my forearms as it resonates off of the desk top, and it's not even particularly loud. And it does get loud. The most impressive thing about the bass sound is that it is present even at lower amplitudes. It's noticeable when you go into the app and disable the extra bass. I don't have to tolerate the hollow "tin can" sound that I've grown to ignore from my previously favorite portable bluetooth speakers, and those things were really hard to beat for sound range, amplitude, and durability. I have the original and the Mega size of those pringle-can-shaped speakers; this one seems like it's halfway between them in size but it's actually pretty close to the Mega one. It just sounds way better across the full range of musical frequencies. Judging by sound quality alone, this speaker is gorgeous. The ability to connect speakers together wirelessly is nice. I hope that the protocol that the use for stringing speakers together can be adopted by other manufacturers as well so that we can all play. Also I can't figure out what's the difference between speaker add function and wireless party chain. I wish this supported stereo, multi-room, and surround like the app seems to be able to do with other Sony speakers. It has some nice features I really didn't think to ask for • rubber feet so it can lay on its side without rolling around • clearly marked NFC connectivity target • a rubber panel covering buttons and connectors, and those connectors aren't all crowded together • a recessed reset button • USB charger output -- not fast charging, but it does have enough current for my phone or a tablet It has some things that, like, what were they thinking? • Disco lights? Well, at least this one (unlike my GTK XB60) the lights stay off when you turn them off. Okay, the lights can be fun sometimes. I just don't think, "hey you know what this needs? Flashing lights!" when shopping for portable speakers. • Party booster? Great. I can pound on my speaker and make percussion sounds. What could possibly go wrong? That feature enables itself sometimes. Some things annoyingly missing: • Illuminate the control buttons for goodness sake! • It has no grip or loop for a leash. • Track forward/back buttons! (when will someone come up with a thumbs-up, thumbs-down button for bluetooth devices!!!) Another thing I discovered is that the Android app has a firm grip on the speaker; I wasn't able to pair it to my laptop until I closed the app. Overall -- this has impressive sound and some great features. I recommend it!

This speaker is perfect for our outside tiki bar and pool! Friends have all said how great it sounds - love it!

I love this little speaker. The sound quality is completely unexpected. I did not expect it for the price point and especially the size. It can get really loud. The sound quality is great. The extra bass is really noticeable. I don't really care too much for it, so I disable it but it's definitely a plus for those who want that deep bass. The one thing that I might say is that sound clarity could be a little lacking although I still think that in the sub 300 range, this is hard to beat. I think it is designed very well. It's gorgeous in my opinion. The lights are a great feature especially if you have friends over. You can also disable this feature. My one gripe about this speaker is the app. I know it's not part of the package but given that they're really pushing the app for control of the speaker's sound, lights, and other features, I thought the app could use alot of work. I don't know if it was my phone, but while I had no trouble connecting to the speakers via my bluetooth, connecting to the speakers from the app very frustrating. It just couldn't sense my phone connected sometimes. It also just randomly stopped and had to troubleshoot. The app was just frustrating. There is the mixer which you can use to adjust the sound profile. There is the option to control the light settings. These weren't too bad. On that note, Sony is also really pushing the ability to connect the speakers together. I could not for the life of me get it to work. I could get speakers to individually connect and play, but I could not form a "group" to have them play together. It would just keep saying setup needed and it was just a frustrating experience. All in all, these speakers are amazing. Individually there is no problem, but the app is frustrating and I couldn't get the sound links to work.

This thing is loud enough to stay rocking from anywhere in the house or outside entertaining a backyard bbq.

Let's get this out of the way: this is probably one of the best outdoor, portable, and great sounding speakers you can buy at the $150 range. I'm not sure how Sony did it but the design and execution is pretty much spot on. After using it extensively for different things, including music inside, outside, in water, in the sand, telephone calls, computer speakers, and a bedroom light/music box, it is great. The speaker itself is not too bulky and has a pretty sleek design. I appreciated the rubber stoppers on the bottom of it to keep it from slipping. With a few buttons on the top to control the basics and a sealed panel on the back for more, there isn't much else to look at. Except for the lights, which you can change colors and do a pretty good job (remembering the price point) of syncing to the music that's playing. The speaker is more useful with the Sony Music Center app, giving you full control of the speaker, lights, and its sound profile, all from the app. Connecting to my Bluetooth devices was a simple press of the button, and found it to pair quickly once turning it off. Battery life ran me about 20 hours straight, which a few different settings played with (higher volume, lights no lights, etc). This was good for me. In all honesty the only complaint I have is about it's connection: sometimes I found the speaker to hold a very weak connection, dropping a second or two from a song even while my phone was right next to it. I'm chalking it up as something that may improve over time, but if that's the only issue and it's not widespread then it won't matter. All in all, I really was impressed with this thing. We have two other portable speakers, starting with the letter U, and honestly think these sound better and are more protective from the elements.

We had a party for 30 ppl in a very large restaurant room, the sound is great and perfect to use for dancing.

Wow, Sony is really on a roll where it comes to audio reproduction. I've tried my share of bluetooth speakers and this one from Sony takes the cake, replacing the set of two that I've had for almost two years. It's nice, stylish, and has great sound! As is becoming a must-have feature, it can connect with other speakers in it's line to replicate the same audio and give stereo effects. A feature I found especially interesting was the light show capabilities. It has a microphone so can act as a speakerphone and if your phone is configured to listen, be used via your phone for smart assistant duties. It's pretty cool it can leverage your phone to support that capability. As for speakerphone, I can't say I've ever used that feature with my existing speakers, other than to try it out nearly two year ago when first purchased. Setting up the XB-31 was a breeze. All I did was turn it on, tap my phone on the NFC logo on the front, and tapped yes when my phone asked if I wanted to pair with the speakers. Then I was up and running. These are billed as party speakers and they certainly do deliver with great volume range. But unlike some, which substitute quality sound for bass and volume for a party, assuming people may not notice as they're busy with other things, the XB-31 sound really good. You'd be just as happy using them to run a dance party as you would a quiet dinner party playing classical music in the background with the light effects turned off. What would be really cool is if Sony could come up with an update or smartphone app that would allow the speaker to better synchronize its lights to music. These speakers also have a stereo input jack and can charge your phone from the speaker battery. All in all, I'm really impressed by this speaker.

Met all of my expectations. SONY quality throughout. More than enough sound to fill our family room.
