The sound on this speaker is very good--it's not the GREATEST quality but it is excellent for the price. Add the "gaming" style lights to it and you have a very enticing speaker for the young adult in your life who also happens to be a gamer. Worth it and would buy again!

This is easiest one of the best brands that won’t break the bank. Definitely not on the low end price wise, but still a lot cheaper than boss like products. You get a bang for your buck on these, especially since they are constantly on sale so never buy it full price.

This little speaker is really nice, I like the sound and the light feature. I did notice the battery went fast with the light. I tried to use the speaker for 6+ hours while camping and the battery died, I had to charge it again. Other than that it’s a good little speaker

Nice bass. Sleek design. Was great for the beach and cookouts. The main issue is the speaker blew after 4 months. We kept the volume below 75% all the time so it was really disappointing.

Sony recently introduced a lineup of three SRS-XB speakers. The XB31 is the middle brother but still packs a pretty decent punch. Like it's bigger brother, the XB41, the XB31 also has an interesting party trick: you can tap it to produce various sounds. The smaller XB21 does not include this feature. If the idea of tapping the speaker to make various percussion sounds doesn't sound all that useful to you, you'd be right. But it can be a little bit fun. The first thing I did was check out the various settings. I noticed one set of options included "cowbell." So, of course, I had to play "Don't Fear the Reaper," and yes, it needed more cowbell, which I happily supplied. But silly stuff like that is about all the party mode is good for.  Another issue is that the speaker seemed to respond to the taps inconsistently.  You also get a ring of light around the grill and two mini-strobes at the sides that all flash in rhythm. Again, not all that useful, but it adds a touch of fun. But those lights and sounds are just party tricks. The real trick with this speaker is how rich the soundfield is and how deep the bass is.  For a speaker this size, this little guy really does sound amazingly good.  We tried a variety of types of music, and the little XB31 handled them all with ease, returning a depth of sound that you just don't expect from 48mm speakers. Sony has done a terrific job with their LIVE SOUND mode.   The footpads for this speaker are robust, which seems odd to say about a small speaker. They are sort of oversized, rounded, rubber knobs and do a great job of providing stability and the XB31 kicks out sound. I would think these footpads would do an excellent job in most situations, and they certainly give the speaker a more solid base than many of tiny feet most speakers seem to have. The XB31 measures 9 1/8" wide x 3 1/2" high x 3 1/4" deep and comes in just under 2 pounds.  In terms of other features, battery life is phenomenal. Sony rates the XB31 for 24 hours of play, without the lights and such.  And the XB31 carries and IP67 waterproof rating (Sony also says it is dustproof and rustproof). It natively communicates via BT 4.2 and also includes NFC pairing.  I would have liked to see BT 5.0, since these are a new line of speakers, but 4.2 isn't bad.  The fact is, most devices you'll use it with don't have BT 5.0, either. Another positive feature is that you can pair several of these speakers together to create Sony calls a "party chain."  The lights in each speaker of the chain will operate in unison, which would probably be pretty cool if you a number of them together.  When you get right down to it, I kind of wish Sony had skipped the party tricks and just let this speaker stand on it's own. But you can disable all the extra stuff and still have one rocking little speaker.  And since sound quality is the main thing for a speaker, the XB31 is a real winner. 

The salesperson at Best Buy showed me several different portable speakers. This one seemed to have the best value. It was on sale for $99. I would not have paid more than that. The sound quality is good (much better than cheaper ones that I’ve had before). The blinking lights look cool. I purchased this for my daughter (age13). She loved it.

Pretty loud. Going to use for our wedding. About to buy a second one.
