Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just got this and the JBL Flip 5 (thinking that was a previous one... I was wrong, we had a JBL Charge 3). This Sony does not stand up to our old JBL Charge 3 I bought for my daughter when she was 14 and we lived in Brooklyn... she is now 21 and that thing JUST died after the abuse a teen/young adult can bestow on it. I even opened it up and soldered the wired to buy us an extra couple months. So she moved out and I was looking to replace the JBL Charge 3. I bought this Sony (figuring comparable in features and quality) and the JBL Flip 5 (assuming that was the one we had... it was not. It is half the size and great sound until you turn up the volume... the Charge 3 was so purrfect). So the Sony just did not compare at all in sound. I even hit the Live button (as stated in a few comments) and that just sounded different, but not better. The bass doesn't even come close to the Charge 3... and that Flip is not for the picky ear, but probably great for those who just want some normal volume, great quality music... like in an office or something like that. The Sony doesn't even compare in sound quality to the JBL Flip 5. I am going to return both and get either a JBL Charge 5 (I believe the numbers are versions so i.e. the JBL Charge 5 is a newer version of the JBL Charge 3 I was looking for... I hope they didn't change it too much. I must say that the Sony lights were kinda cool, the blue color was really nice, and I liked that it uses a USB-C port (same as my Samsung Note 8 phone... I refuse to give it up till it can't make calls. lol)

Outdoors no good

For the money it is not worth the expectations I had. I sold it to a friend and will buy a product that has true outdoor capabilities for $200ish. I placed my trust in Sony and the next level upgrade has the same issues and problems I have with it. I know I'll get an automated response, don't bother Sony...make a better speaker with ooomph. My purpose is to help other outdoor music partiers not buy this and find something you don't have to carry with you to hear.

We also think doing your research is important 😊, this is why we take all comments seriously. We try to answer each one the best we can, and yes automated responses would be easier.
So, first we designed the XB33 specifically for audio clarity throughout its volume range. This is rare in the small speaker world, but our customer told us it was more important to them than the speaker being super loud but not sound good. If you want a louder speaker we do have you covered. The XB41 will get louder than the XB33, as will the XP500, and the XP700. Each is bigger and louder than the last, but maintaining Sony's idea of what sound quality should be. You can even pair up to 100 of any of the speakers mentioned together for truly large outdoor gatherings.
Over the generations of our Bluetooth speakers sound quality is something our music-loving customers appreciate most. That being said the SRSXB33 also gets very loud for its size and audio precision. The SRS-XB33 combines a tough, durable design with long battery life, deep bass sound, and flashing lights. Giving you the freedom to party wherever, whenever.
Second, here are some things that might help:
Download the Sony Music Center app, there you will find an EQ that allows you to turn all the frequencies up. This will give you greater volume.
It is recommended to fully charge the speaker, especially after it has gone below 10%, and hit the auto volume limiter (designed to keep your speaker safe). Then Increase the volume level of the wireless speaker and source devices.
It is also advisable to find different devices that will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission.
