Sony's speaker chaining - horrible - don't buy

I should have checked first, but I naively thought I'd be fine. I'll be returning this speaker and selling the other one I have. Horrible customer experience.

We appreciate your feedback about not being able to connect to older models.
We really wanted to knock the XB43 out of the park, and upgraded the Bluetooth chipset in the new models for a better and more powerful connection than ever.
We do understand that is a challenge to customers who have older models and apologize for the inconvenience.
The XB43 still has a Party Connect function that is capable of connecting to these compatible models: SRS-XB43, SRS-XB33, SRS-XB23. And you can pair it with up to 100 devices in total. If you do pick up more, make sure you use the Sony Music Center App so you can control them properly.

A really cool speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I gave the SRS-XB43 a full 5-hour charging using the included power charger when first received. The charger comes with a USB type-C connector end. Setup was essentially non-existent: Turn the power on, place into pairing mode, and then pair it to my cellphone. Easy as pie! Everything was ready for use in just minutes. Located on top of the speaker are most of your controls. There is a Power button, a Bluetooth button, a Play/Pause button, Volume buttons, and the Live button. Hold the Play/Pause button down for a couple of seconds and doing so activated the Google Assistant on my phone and played the audio through the XB43 speaker. I had the XB43 playing 3 Doors Down when I held the Play/Pause button down, and asked Google Assistant to play a Clapton song instead. It worked perfectly! With Live turned off, everything about the music is flat and directional. Engaging the Live button makes a substantial difference in the robust quality of the music. It pushes out sound with a surround sound quality to it. Plus, if you have more than one of these speakers, you can link them all together to cover a larger area. According to the documentation, up to 100 speakers can be linked together. The bass coming out of this speaker is outstanding. The side passive radiators have been optimized to reproduce clear bass sound, and I can confirm that it works. This unit is very solid at 7.5 lbs. You know, a ‘don’t drop it on your foot’ kind of solid. This, unlike other products that feel like cheap plastic. The XB43 has an enormous battery that provides up to 24 hours of runtime. If Extra Bass mode is on, runtime is reduced to 14 hours. The back of the speaker has a flap cover that protects the charging port, a USB port, and a microphone-in port. There are also 3 buttons that provide other functions. One button gives you a verbal battery status update, as well as turns the lights on/off. The USB port is used as a charging port for your phone. Note that that the XB43 does not come with the USB cable that you would use to charge your phone. To check out its charging abilities, I plugged my phone into the USB port. All the while, I was using the phone to Bluetooth music to the speaker. I don’t know what sort of hit this would place on the speaker’s battery, but it worked without problem. This speaker, by the way, is rated at IP67 - which means that it is waterproof, rustproof and dustproof. Sony offers a couple of apps that can be found in the Google App store. One is the Sony Music Center, the other is called Fiestable. Fiestable is pretty interesting in that it allows you to dynamically select what colors you want the speaker lights to display. It also has a DJ mode, a Sampler mode and an Illumination mode. For those DJ wannabees out there, this app is for you. I love the sound this speaker puts out. For me, I see two downsides. First, it does not have Google Assistant built in. An older Sony speaker I own has it and I find it handy to have. Second, the controls on top of the speaker are dark just like the speaker’s case, making it difficult to see the controls when it is dark outside. Still, its core functions are top-notch. As such, I’m giving this speaker a 5-star rating.

Good for a Small Room!

If you’re looking for something for a very small room like an office or college dorm room, then it’s pretty good. It was not what I was looking for. I was looking for something a lot louder with bass, so I returned this and got a Sony Sound Bar with a Subwoofer.

To get the most out of the volume, we recommend trying the different sound modes found in the Sony Music Center app, until you find the one you like for outdoor settings. There is even an EQ in there. You may also try the STEREO PAIR in which 2 SRS-XB33 speakers are required. By connecting 2 speakers via BLUETOOTH connection, you can enjoy a more powerful sound.
