Posted .Hi JayD, Thank you for the feedback on your experience with your XB43 speaker. The XB43 is specifically designed for audio clarity throughout its volume range. This is something our music-loving customers appreciate most. That being said the XB43 also gets very loud for its size and audio precision.
We want to make sure you are getting the most out of your speaker. Please make sure you have downloaded the Sony Music Center app. There you will find all sorts of tools to fine-tune your XB43 and maximize the volume to your liking. There is even an EQ.
Please make sure you fully charge the speaker, especially after it has gone below 10%, and hit the auto volume limiter (designed to keep your speaker safe).
Then Increase the volume level of the wireless speaker and source devices.
You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like the Sony SRS-XB43 Portable Bluetooth Speaker more than the smaller cousins in the Sony wireless portable speaker line, this one is a bit of a beast and almost impossible to pickup with one hand. The sound is rich and clear sounding, bass response is substantial, the sound settings are customizable when using the Sony Music center app. The speaker is easy to pair, has a combined play/pause/next track/answer call button and a separate +/- volume buttons on top. Around back a removable small panel reveals configuration controls, a USB Type A jack for charging other devices, a USB Micro Type B jack for charging the speaker and a line in jack (which I usually do not see on Bluetooth speaker) for connecting a device to playback through this speaker. When I first started to play music through the speaker it was set to “Rave” mode which flashes sets of LEDs on the front of the speaker along with a changing color LED on each side that reproduces the light along the edges of the speaker. Before I had a seizure, I turned off this feature using the Sony Music Center app, although after using the speaker for a while I found myself playing with different lighting modes, finally settling in on the “Calm Cinnabar” mode. There are also ways of generating sound effects by bumping the sides, front, top or bottom of the speaker. You can also chain this speaker to others of the same type to expand your sound field (although I was never successful chaining with my SRS-XB41). To me most of these features are kind of gimmicky, with the only that had any staying power with me is the lighted borders and sound modes. Overall what matters with a Bluetooth speaker is sound and this speaker delivers that in convincing fashion. Pros: - Configurable, rich sound with great bass response - Big block of portable speaker - Sony Music center app that is the heart of controlling and configuring the speaker - Very good battery life, with a USB type A jack for charging other devices - Line In jack for connecting devices via a cord - LED lighted borders Cons: - Difficult to grab with one hand. - Not a fan of the combined play/pause/next track/answer call button.

Great sound from this medium size speaker

The XB43 delivers strong sound performance in a portable package plus adds in a few extra features to help get the party started. In the box is the speaker and a usb-c charging cable. The speaker also has USB port for charging other devices as well. Out of the box, this speaker pairs seamlessly with my Android, and can be controlled via the Sony Music Center app. As far as the actual speaker quality, the sound is impressive and the battery lasts a full week using it 3+ hours each day. There is enough speaker to power the full range from bass to treble without losing the audio integrity or sounding flat. The app allows you to control the range mix, as well as extra bass and the light show. In addition to sound control, the app provides a DJ option and light show selection. There are multiple options for lights from single color to "rave" that provides different light patterns and colors. Lastly there is a feature to connect multiple Sony speakers for a surround sound experience. I have used this speaker in the barn, beside the pool and out at the lake, so far I haven't damaged it from being splashed or wiped down with water to clean off the dirt. The only complaint I have is that there isn't a handle, and the speaker is a bit bulky and substantial (~6.5 lbs), to the point where I can't carry it with one hand unless I tuck it under my arm to support it fully. I'm not sure I'd recommend taking this hiking or anywhere you can't throw it in a bag to carry. That being said, it wasn't enough to remove a star, because the trade off is the amazing sound quality. I highly recommend for a versatile, take almost anywhere, speaker.

Power input jack failed less than six months and Sony will not honor the warranty. "we only cover software" is what they said. No parts available. Now it's a $300 paper weight. Last time I'll buy a Sony product.

We'd love to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, please follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Place the speaker and the BLUETOOTH device within 1 m (3.2 ft) of each other.
For Apple iOS devices, the unit is compatible with iOS 10.0 or later. A BLUETOOTH connection is not available on the devices with iOS 9.x or earlier.
To use the Stereo Pair function or Party Connect function, pair with the speaker in which the(BLUETOOTH) indicator flashes in blue.
If the(BLUETOOTH) indicator is not double flashing in blue, press the (BLUETOOTH) button. You hear voice guidance (BLUETOOTH pairing) and the (BLUETOOTH) indicator starts double flashing (pairing mode).
Once the speaker is initialized, an iPhone/iPod touch may not be able to connect to the speaker. In this case, delete pairing information on the iPhone/iPod touch, then pair them again.
Check that the BLUETOOTH device is turned on and the BLUETOOTH function is activated on the device.
If the speaker is not displayed on the BLUETOOTH device, turn off the device, and then turn on the device again. It may improve symptoms.

For the audio volume, the sound may become low when the built-in battery is running low and the CHARGE indicator flashes slowly, while the speaker is being powered by the built-in battery only. Also, when the rechargeable built-in battery is running low as a result of long-time use of the speaker at a loud volume even though the speaker was connected to an AC outlet by the AC adaptor (supplied).
If the sound becomes low while in use, turn off the speaker and charge the built-in battery sufficiently.

We appreciate your feedback about the weight of the unit. The weight is due to the all-new X-Balance speaker design, and 2 new tweeter. We also kept the speaker waterproof and dustproof like the XB41, but the XB43 is shockproof as well. Oh, and even though we added more speakers your XB43 still has up to 24hours of battery life.
We want you to be able to get the most out of your speaker.
Please make sure you have downloaded the Sony Music Center app.
Try out some of the preset sound settings and see what you like.
If all else fails, there is even an EQ for further fine-tuning.
Also, ensure you have charged the XB43 fully, and power the speaker off and then back on.
If the speaker gets too low it will limit the volume output to save the speaker from damage.
You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission. LDAC devices tend to sound the best.
