Persistent Issues with Sony Receivers from Best Bu

From the very beginning, the Sony receiver had noise in the speakers. I reached out to Sony support, and they told me I had to send it to New York for repair. The return period at Best Buy was only a month and I missed it. This is the second time I've bought a Sony receiver at Best Buy and both were defective.

My 3 year old Denon blew out. Replaced with this Sony. I have my PS5 and AppleTV connected to TV and then the receiver is connected to the receiver via ARC. I don't know why but even though Netflix, Disney+, and such work, the streamers (YouTube, Hulu, etc) don't have audio. Tried for about 4 hours with all kinds of resets and different cable configurations and signal configurations. Just not working. VERY disappointed. Going to exchange for a Denon tomorrow. If anyone is aware of this issue and how to fix I would be SO much appreciative if anyone could post something about it here.

    Great receiver for home theater

I've had this receiver for a couple of weeks and it is just awesome. Sony has done a great job going through everything that I've used. My setup is in a basement 'entertainment area' and has Atmos 5.1.2, Polk Audio recessed speakers, LG C1 OLED and Sony 800 Ultra BD player. (There are also many other devices hooked up but not modern 4k/audio drivers) The initial setup is easy and intuitive. It comes with the setup microphone that did an amazingly accurate job of placement of speakers and distance from prime listening position (I double checked it's measurements and it was dead on). After setup it did make a difference to my ear in clarity when sitting in the area I had setup the mic. Just before setup I wired the internet to it and it only took about 5 minutes to update to the latest firmware. The onscreen menus are well laid out and easy to maneuver. The ability to hide unused inputs is very nice also. Built in Chromecast and Spotify is convenient but also for me just a triplicate of smart TV and Roku. The biggest thing for me was the Atmos system. It really was everything I was hoping for in a home theater. It's clear and amazing how much the overhead speakers add to the movie experience. I was also surprised how nice the 360 audio sounds compared to standard stereo. It truly does make is seem like you're at a venue. The bluetooth streaming works great. It's clear and quick and makes it convenient to control sound from anywhere. I never setup or used the multiple zones but it says it has zone 2 and 3 so you can run multiple rooms audio from this receiver. The other nice thing I ran into was that it has component video inputs built in so I can easily hook up things like a VCR and Wii without having to have converters. Overall I am loving having this receiver. Quick setup, great sound and more power than I'll ever need. I'm very happy with this setup and I'm hoping it will last me a very long time.

The Sony STR-AN1000 is an outstanding A/V receiver. I’ve had a few quirks, and I don’t love the simple remote, such that I’d probably deduct a half star if I could. However, the total package is really nice and the performance is superb. Like a lot of receivers, it’s a big heavy rectangular box. It blends in well enough into the background of my A/V shelf. Across the back are a plethora of connections: six HDMI inputs, including 2 rated for 4k/120 or 8K/60, and 2 HDMI outputs. HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision are all supported in video. There are speaker connections for up 7.2 channels, or 5.2.2 if you use height speakers for Dolby Atmos/DTS:X. I found the binding posts to be a little tight to work with: each channel’s L/R is vertically arranged, and I’ve found receivers that put them side to side a little easier to wire. I had to separate my wires a bit more in order to get them to properly reach. My system is a 5.1.2: JBL A190 towers on the front, JBL A125C center, Onkyo SKF-4800 towers for the rears, and SKH-410 height speakers. I am using a single SVS PB-1000 Pro subwoofer, but there are two subwoofer outputs. All of the speakers are 6 ohm. Setup is pretty easy via the “easy setup” option. The GUI is easy to read but is rather plain; most of it is simple black and white. The setup takes you through room measurements and height measurements for the speaker and TV and confirms your speaker arrangement before walking you through the calibration. The included microphone and plastic stand is very nice, and the microphone seems more sophisticated than ones I’ve used before. It goes through a series of test tones to calibrated levels and distances. Though the setup overall did very well, I did my own manual adjustments with regard to crossovers, and I tend to set all of my speakers to “small” to force more low-frequency signals to the sub. The speakers were dialed in pretty quickly, but I had to play with the subwoofer configuration a bit to get it right. It’s still not quite perfect for music, but it’s fantastic for movies. Sound decoding is generous and covers just about everything you’d want, including a full array of Dolby and DTS formats including Atmos and DTS:X, along with some Sony proprietary sound enhancements like center channel raise and speaker relocation. I did run into one quirk though: the Disney+ app on my Sony X900F TV would only send 2.0 LPCM output to the receiver. I didn’t have this problem with my previous receiver, and there was no combination of settings between the TV and receiver that would get it to output 5.1. If I used my PS5, there was no issue. All of my other built-in apps–Vudu, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount–all worked just fine. This is a fantastic receiver for movies. This definitely seems to drive my speakers with more power than my previous receiver, although it’s somewhat hard to discern the exact power ratings for my particular arrangement. My go-to films for testing were amazing: the opening battle scene of ‘Master and Commander,’ where the cannon fire was absolutely thunderous. Next, I went to the ‘War of the Worlds’ scene where the tripod emerges from the city street, which is an excellent demo for low-frequency punch, and the Sony provided a seat-shaking experience. Then I tried the finale from ‘V for Vendetta’ where the explosion of Parliament was the best I’ve ever heard it. Finally, the battle above Coruscant from ‘Revenge of the Sith’ provided my final test, with plenty of lively effects through the sound field. Overall, for films, this can handle cinematic bombast with aplomb. It was no slouch for music, either. I watched Elton John’s “One Night Only” concert DVD, which I’ve seen many times, and was impressed with its performance, with a very full sound stage and plenty of nice details coming through clearly. For streaming music there’s also a variety of platforms supported like Chromecast, Spotify Connect, and AirPlay. While soundbars have definitely made a dent in the traditional home theater setup for many people, for those who want true cinematic thunder, there’s no escaping physics: bigger speakers simply do better. And for those who want that experience, a good A/V receiver is at the heart of a home setup, and the Sony STR-AN1000 is an excellent choice to build around.

For the past few years I have been using Sony's STR-DH770, and I have really liked that receiver since I first powered it up. Now having the opportunity to upgrade to the STR-AN1000, it was no bainer, and an easy transition. Cosmeticly, it's identical except the led display has been updated. You can easily see what is going on with a quick glance. The STR-AN1000 was easy to initially setup, and using the auto calibration worked out very well in my situation. I was impressed how good it sounds while using it to watch movies. This receiver has Sony's 360 spacial sound mapping technology. Having only using Dolby Digital/Atmos in the past for watching movies, I was very curious about this new feature. Turning it on for the first time really blew me away. I was amazed how much more sound this feature brings to my listening area. It feels like speakers are everywhere. You are also able to use DTS:X. You are able to quick change between all the surround options with the remote, and to be honest, 360 SSM sounds the best to me in my situation. All of my main speakers are mounted in the ceiling, and thankfully there are settings during the setup that allows you to select this configuration. The center sound actually sounds like it's coming from the screen now. My small theater room has never sounded so good. I'm very impressed with this receiver. Likes: 1.) 360 SSM makes it sound like speakers are everywhere 2.) Plenty of power 3.) The on screen GUI is easy to navigate Dislikes: 1.) You have to aim the remote directly at the receiver to get it to work properly 2.) Auto calibration sets a 120hz high pass on all my speakers, and I haven't figured out how to change this yet.

Scared my kitty with the rain

It's been a few years since I've had a true 5.1 setup, but my last few places didn't leave a lot of good options for true surround system. This system however is a true beast and it supports Sony's wireless rear speakers which made it a game changer for me. First and foremost, setup on this was incredibly simple if you've ever setup a receiver before. Even if you haven't the included instruction book and on screen examples will get you 90% of the way. The system automatically picked up the SA-RS3S speakers I purchased and configured them to work with the system. It also updated the firmware on the speakers and the receiver for me. I wish Sony provided more feedback on how to position the rear speakers, but a little online searching helped provide optimal placement. For those wondering, there is a difference for when you're doing a 5.1 vs a 7.1 setup. After a quick run through with the automatic room analyzer, it was off to watch some test videos. One of the Dolby tests had a rain storm going through the room. It sounded so real and immersive that my little kitty freaked out, thinking it was raining inside the house. Switching over to movies was just as amazing. On my previous receiver, I always had issues hearing the vocal track, but on this one everything was balanced perfectly. Audio from all channels came through crystal clear and I don't need subtitles to understand the dialog anymore. Considering that my listening spot is a good 14 ft from the front audio, that's really impressive. On a side note, I really commend Sony for their packaging strategy. There were no plastic baggies and all the padding was made from formed cardboard, so everything made it into the recycle bin when the receiver was setup. All in all, this is a great upgrade for your surround sound system, especially if you haven't invested in wired surround speakers yet and want to go wireless.

I’ve been an A/V receiver and wired speaker person throughout my life. This is my first Sony receiver, and so far, I’m not disappointed. Setting it up was fairly simple. My current TV is a Sony XB-55X90J that supports HDMI 2.1 and 4k@120Hz. In addition, my TV supports EARC, which allows me to control some of the AN1000 settings through the TV menus. I am currently using 7 Sony Core series speakers in a 5.0.2 channel setup. My front speakers are the Sony SSCS3 Floor standing speakers, with the matching SSCSE Atmos enabled speakers sitting on top. My center channel is the Sony SSCS8 and my rear speakers are the Sony SSCS5. I have an open living room area in an apartment that doesn’t follow a traditional box design. While I also own the Sony SA-CS9 subwoofer, I did not use it for testing. I’ve watched a number of movies supporting a wide variety of audio formats of which I have yet to see the AN1000 fail to play properly. The sound quality is incredibly clean and precise with no real EQ tweaking needed to get crisp clean sound out of the speakers. I’ve listened to a number of musical formats with various streaming services and found the Sony to be lacking nowhere in terms of sound reproduction with everything sounding precise as the original recording, The AN1000 supports a feature that I personally haven’t come across before on an A/V receiver. It has the ability to pair Bluetooth (headphones, earbuds, etc.) to it and when enabled and connected, you can have your own private listening mode, with the volume turned up even more if you want. When Bluetooth is configured in this mode, it disables the speakers automatically. The 360 Spatial sound mapping was fairly easy to configure with the included microphone and stand. The calibration process was straightforward and mainly requires you to pick your speaker configuration before it runs. I feel that there was a noticeable difference after running this calibration for 360 spatial sound and enabling it. It adds a new depth to not just music, but to movies as well. Overall, there is nothing to complain about with the Sony STR-AN1000 as it’s a extremely capable current and next gen AV receiver, supporting practically all major formats and even 8k@60Hz video. I was looking to upgrade from my older receiver and this was just right for me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it sounds and performs.
