It's very easy to use, I used geek squad to hook it up and he was awsome as well

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I replaced my 30-year-old Sony STR-AV970X, only after I could not get it out of "PROTECTOR" mode, believing it had served me very well for three decades and in need of "retirement". I originally purchased the 2.1 channel receiver, but decided to use it to replace the 50-year-old Pioneer SX780 I had on my porch. The 5.2 Channel Sony would go in my living room where I could actually use my center channel speakers again, sans, having to add an additional amplifier. I very much appreciate having both RCA and HDMI inputs as I can use my "old school" Sony VCR and DVD players while still allowing for future upgrades. The functions are not as "user friendly" as those on my old receiver, with all its LED lights and huge remote, however, like everything, it's a learning experience. One improvement over my old receiver is its tolerance of lower impedance speakers, permitting my hooking up 6 ohm Aiwa with 8 ohm Sony rear speakers for a truly unique surround experience. I am highly satisfied with both my new Sony receivers, and, as I am nearly 70, will probably enjoy them for the rest of my life.

The old receiver didn't have HDMI capability and I am planning on cutting the cable and going to Roku or something and wanted to be able to run everything through the receiver and now I can. My old TV only has an SDI connector so I can't connect HDMI directly to it. A needed a way to pick off the audio.

The instructions stated I didn't need that cable when the TV had a HDMI/ARC port to connect to.

Posted .Hi RobertMoore, Thank you reaching out to us. The AV receiver is compatible with ARC. If the AV receiver is connected to a TV’s HDMI IN jack compatible with ARC, TV sound can be output from the receiver using only one HDMI cable and without connecting an optical digital cable.
If the TV has no ARC label on its HDMI ports, connect the HDMI cable to any HDMI ports on the TV and to the HDMI TV OUT (ARC) jack on the receiver. Then connect an optical cable to the optical output port of the TV and the Optical IN jack on the receiver. For more details, see pages 19, 21 from the manuals.

Sony Surround Sound Upgrade
