I originally bought this Because I won speakers in a contest and I wanted to set them up with a new home theater TV And make full use of the product! I couldn’t be happier with my purchase… It was so easy to hook up and the whole sound system sounds amazing till this day!

I am just using it in a 3.1 configuration and it fills the family room (my man cave) with great sound. I like that I can add surround speakers later. It quickly adjusted the sound from the speakers to the room. Knowing that it is so quick to adjust allows us to change things in the room without worrying about needing a long calibration time.

Sony Receiver review

I have always had Onkyo before and they were easy to set up, have great surround sound and change between TV and gaming easily. Attaching wiring to the Sony is easy, set up is definitely more complicated and I doubt if I have it done correctly. Each time I turn on TV there is a default back to asking what I want to do and where I want to go and it asks me this twice. The surround sound also must have the same thing because I have to press buttons to get it working each time I want it Needless to say I am not that pleased with the unit but it does work and quite possibly would work much better if it were set up differently. I may need to get the Geek Squad to come and see if they can get it working better. Right now I would suggest another product based upon my difficulty but this was all Best Buy had when I needed something that wasn't in the $800+ catagory.

We're sorry to learn you've been having difficulty setting up your new STR-DH590 receiver. We would like to know more about the situation you faced with the receiver. If the receiver home menu pops up when switching to view content from other connected devices and the receiver is connected to the TV using an HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port, make sure that all HDMI devices connected have HDMI Control enabled. If all devices have HDMI Control enabled:
• If power is turned on from a device (such as a Blu-ray Disc player), then the soundbar or receiver and the TV turn on, and the TV switches to the proper input to view the menu or content.
• By design and normal operation, soundbars and receivers identify the connected HDMI device, and the content (including the menu display) passes through to the TV.
Note: If all HDMI devices are connected to the TV and only the HDMI ARC/eARC port connects to the soundbar or receiver, then the TV will both control and display all device menus and content.

Good for starters

The more I played with it the more movies I watched and the more I did my research I realized I should of spent a little bit more for a more top tier reciever. This one does the job but has limitations as far as sound and features on my next purchase I'm definitely going bigger like 7.1 with atmos and all the bells and whistles.

Remote has just the right amount of buttons (no overkill on buttons I have no idea what they do). I give it only 4 stars because the only way to adjust the bass/treble output manually is by hooking the receiver up to the the tv via hdmi cable which is just annoying and cumbersome to change and really unnecessarily takes up an HDMI input on the tv.

Brad, the installer from Best Buy, said that the wire configuration was not meant for the Sony model. He was right and I ordered the Yamaha and it was perfect. Brad did a great job explaining the different setup and after using it I realize that the cord cutting and getting rid of all the other devices and adding Roku was the right thing to do. Thanks,Brad

It automatically connected to my TV (which is a slightly older model Aquos) and makes switching from one input to another easy without having to change both the TV and the receiver.

This was a very good decision as it was easy to sync everything, including my new Sony blue ray. Pretty much seamless.
