It's very easy to use, I used geek squad to hook it up and he was awsome as well

Sony Surround Sound Upgrade

Surprising Nice

So decided after a couple years of looking at my speakers and not having anything to use them with I picked this up on sale during the holidays. I was shocked at how good it was and how it was way better than my older high end one. Only needed 5.2 so it was perfect!

STRDH590 - D40fM-K09

The instructions stated I didn't need that cable when the TV had a HDMI/ARC port to connect to.

Posted .Hi RobertMoore, Thank you reaching out to us. The AV receiver is compatible with ARC. If the AV receiver is connected to a TV’s HDMI IN jack compatible with ARC, TV sound can be output from the receiver using only one HDMI cable and without connecting an optical digital cable.
If the TV has no ARC label on its HDMI ports, connect the HDMI cable to any HDMI ports on the TV and to the HDMI TV OUT (ARC) jack on the receiver. Then connect an optical cable to the optical output port of the TV and the Optical IN jack on the receiver. For more details, see pages 19, 21 from the manuals.

Great basic AV receiver with versatile options.

The ARC and easy to use software works good enough for my needs. The auto-calibration is quick and easy to use. Using all Sony speakers with this set up that fits my budget and needs. A good start AV receiver that does not hurt your wallet if you find it on a good sale.
