I am not an audiophile, but I do like good sound when I listen to radio, TV or internet podcasts. This Sony receiver is really quite nice and I like the on-screen setup that it has. I also like the quick connection to my Amazon Echo when I want to listen to internet radio or a podcast. Very nice sound. A wide range of external inputs and a 4K passthru are also very nice. The remote is nicely organized and easy to use. Various sound modifications make it easy to adjust the sound to the acoustics of the room, or to your own preference. I'm really very happy and can recommend this receiver highly.

Before I bought this receiver, I was using a Pioneer VSX-D509S receiver I'd purchased around 2001, so I was waaaaay behind the times with receiver tech. I'm not sure I ever had that thing set up correctly. With this new Sony receiver, I hardly even opened the manual, and everything seemed to work right away. The speaker calibration was automatic. If I turn on my Xbox, the receiver and TV turn on automatically! I haven't run it through the ringer sound wise, but at a glance, the sound is great, and probably better than with my old Pioneer. I'm super happy with it, and wish I would have upgraded years ago.

This is an excellent entry-level receiver/amp for a basic home system, and it works especially well when the other components (TV, DVD/Blu Ray player, etc.) are also manufactured by Sony.

Home Theater on a budget. Sony has been making quality products for a long time. This is no different. Plenty of connectivity, power and ease of set up and use. No its not going to satisfy any audiophile but thats ok. This will do a great job for everyone else.

Highly recommended. ships incredibly fast with the best tracking features I have seen. Product arrived in excellent condition and the instructions are easy to follow setup is a breeze and the sound is fantastic. If you are looking for a decent 5.2 AV Receiver look no further. Sony is a name that has a reputation for quality equipment at a economical price point and this unit is no exception. I get no compensation I just want to pass on my experience because shopping for electronics can be iffy.

I bought an expensive new HT cabinet and found that it wasn't deep enough to accommodate my Marantz NR1506 receiver. I searched around for an A/V receiver that wasn't as deep and found, among a few others, this Sony STR-DH590. While not quite as feature-rich as the Marantz it has proven a good substitute for it in my 5.1 system. One minor drawback is that Sony's speaker calibration is not as accurate as the Audyssey system on the Marantz. It reported several of the speakers as being much farther away than the actually are. It also only measures from one seating position, unlike the Marantz. There was also some quirkiness with ARC from my LG OLED55B7P so I decided to just use TOSLINK from the TV to the Sony. ARC implementations seem to be poorly implemented on many devices so the issue might be with the TV and not the receiver. I also wish it had a couple more HDMI ports but it hasn't been an issue for me so far. I have the HDTV, LG Blu-ray, TiVo, and Roku all connected and don't anticipate adding anything else. There is no Ethernet or wireless connectivity and therefore no way to do a firmware update if necessary. However, this is to be expected for the price. If you need a compact a/v receiver, I'd recommend considering the Sony.

I replaced an old Sony receiver with the Sony STRDH590 and I was VERY surprised at the clarity/crispness of the sound and additional power. I am using the same speakers, but also changed the center channel, and I am thrilled with the decision! Best Buy had the best price all around, so they will remain my #1 choice for electronics and other home stuff!

Was a good receiver when it did work. After 15 months of light use, this gave out and went into "PROTECT" mode. This was not abused and always plugged into a surge protector and still went after a short time. Reached out to Best Buy product support and they booked an appointment to come in and have it looked at, only problem is that when I got into the store to be told that they do not help with any warranty claims and definitely don't look at receivers in the store. Would not even help me in store to find out who to contact about limited warranty. Super bummed that I logged into my account, spoke with Best Buy and they sent me on a wild goose chase rather than helping. Do not recommend for anyone to gamble on paying the price for such limited use and no support.

This receiver/amplifier performs flawlessly in my set up. I’m running a cable box, X-box, Apple-TV, and Blue Ray player into it and the set up was as simple as plug and play. It powers five Pioneer shelf and middle-front speakers and an old sub-woofer with power to spare in a large living room. Set up went exactly as described in instructions and adding the additional rear speakers was no problem. This appears to be a quality Sony product at a very reasonable price.

This is an excellent piece of equipment for the price. I wasn't interested in all the bells and whistles that it doesn't have anyway, so I didn't have to pay for what I don't use. The mic set up feature for the speakers is automated, once you engage it. It's got 90w rms/channel, 5 channels driven, which is more than ample for most people's needs and it sounds great. One quirk: it doesn't always play nice with my big screen but it's nothing that can't be handled.

This was my first purchase ever of a home audio receiver and after reviewing several products I found this product includes many features others didn't and for less money. I'm able to connect my surround sound speakers, a passive and active sub woofer, my playstation, and more. I especially like the assignable audio in fiber port to connect my roku TV audio out so I can route audio from roku apps like prime tv, vudu and many others. Without that feature I'd have to use the TV's built in speakers and that's defeating the purpose of a surround sound system. Very very pleased

4.5 overall rating. Sounds great with a 5.1 system. Easy to sue and set up. Love watching action movies using it. Voices can be a little hard to hear sometimes on the center speaker but I'm assuming there's an adjustment somewhere we can make to fix this.

      Hi BrianB,

We're happy that you like the ease of setup and amazing sound quality of this receiver. We're sorry to learn that voices are sometimes are hard to hear on the center speaker. You can adjust the size of each speaker (front, center and surround). If the sound is distorted or you hear a lack of surround effects when using multi channel surround sound, try to set center channel to [Small]. For more about "Adjusting the speaker size [Size]", refer to this link.

      https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdh59/v1/en/contents/TP0001553356.html

You can also adjust the level of each speaker (front left/right, center, subwoofer and surround left/right). If you're not getting sound from your center speaker, try switching the Sound field to MULTI ST.

This thing puts out good amounts of power (I'm running it in only a 3.1 configuration, so it has spare capacity), and runs cool, which I really like. The Onkyo TX-SR607 it replaced ran so hot -- all the time -- that I actually kept a laptop cooler fan on top of it because I was worried it was going to die if I didn't. The Bluetooth pairing is hassle-free, as is the auto-calibration. This thing looks good and is easy to use (much more intuitive than my Onkyo was).

Easy connection instructions. Easy setup. I followed the instructions and turned on the power and TV. From there I follwed the instructions shown on TV and was able set up the five speakers plus subwoofer instantly! Then played around with remote to find sound setting that I wanted. This set-up allows me to use my Cable remote without even having to program the cable remote. A step I've always had to do with previous receivers. Puts out more than enough sound. And for my hard of hearing ears, that's plenty!

I was in the market for a new receiver that would pass HDR after I upgraded to a Samsung 65q80t television. My local store was out of the similar Onkyo one so I chose this particular model. So far I'm very happy. Setup was very simple and fast. Sound is good and I like the fast input switching. Everything pairs with my DirecTv remote. I paid 279 and it immediately dropped to 199 less than a week later. Best Buy is supposed to be price adjusting. They were very easy to work with.
