Our previous Home Theater Receiver died an early death after 7+ years. The Sony STRDH790 was purchased as a replacement. The tech, (40 plus years in the stereo/ home theater business) recommended the unit and guess what*-It was easy to install and works like a charm after a quick install. Easy to use once installed and no problems of any kind! Highly recommend this unit! who did the replacement

Fantastic simple unit that was effortless to set up. A wonderful unit for the technological challenges. I replaced my parents old Onkyo with this when they upgraded to a 4K tv and needed hdmi for audio. Literally plugged in the receiver and speakers and turned on the unit and arc was already working. It’s perfect for them.

Killer receiver for a budget build!

I was interested in a budget home theater sound system. Having gone through several soundbars at different price points and not enjoying the sound experience, it was time to research in store. If you're in the North Dartmouth store, I always lean on Jayden for advice on all things Sony. I gave Jayden my budget and wanted equipment that would play nicely with my 85" Sony X900H (purchased in March 2021). He pointed me towards this receiver, and I have been happy so far. I have a Xfinity 4K DVR and an XBOX Series X running to this receiver with no issues. The only issue I have had so far is running my Apple TV 4K (1st GEN 64GB) through to this. For reasons I can't explain, I get green flashes across my screen when I have Apple TV in Dolby Vision. I tried several fixes (including several HDMI cables), but the only fix was running the Apple TV to my TV (input 4). That aside this is one nice receiver. Movies sound incredible and so does normal TV broadcasts. It is not a huge receiver compared to let's say a Marantz, Denon or JVC to name a few. That's something I like because my entertainment center is just able to accept this receiver. Along with this receiver Jayden pointed me towards these Sony speakers as well. Front towers are model #SSCS3, Center channel model #SSCS8, Rear bookshelf's model #SSCS5 and Dolby Atmos Elevation model #SSCSE. I am using my own subwoofer (Martin Logan Dynamo 500). Overall, a really nice system that didn't cost me a lot of money but is delivering BIG TIME! And if you catch the sales correctly, you can score all this for a better price than I did! I honestly highly recommend everything listed here in my review. Thank you, Sony, for making high quality equipment that didn't break the bank and saved my marriage! ;-)

This is a good basic amplifier, with a good assortment of inputs and outputs, including 5 HDMI, an optical, a coax, and rca jacks. Subwoofer jack is rca. Main L/R speakers are screw terminals; rear, center, and Atmos are push/hold. Will drive bookshelf size speakers nice and clear, but dont expect to fill a large auditorium with sound or drive large Bose speakers. Sound balancing microphone included for optimizing initial speaker (eg 5.1.2) setup. A small, inadequate remote is included, but I use my logitech hub/programmable. All in all, worth the $ if you are into 4k home theater.

I went from a old school kenwood 5.1 receiver to this Sony, wow! You could really hear the difference. My wife bought me an Bose surround sound speaker set up but I was running it with the inks receiver. I felt as I wasn’t getting the full potential of the speakers. The receiver delivers that sound quality. This receiver is really easy to set up and to calibrate to maximize the full surround sound. I’m very happy with this purchase

Owned 2 Sony receivers before this one. Make no exceptions this one is quite capable. Few things that I noticed right away is that the sound it produces is clean, crisp and full. I found that out right away when I heard my center channel speaker. The Dolby Atmos is satisfying. Knowing that this receiver is Dolby Vision ready is a plus. You know you’re going to get excellent build quality, performance and reliability with Sony electronics!

Great 7.2 receiver, the menu and configuration is a bit difficult to understand / very basic, but considering the price point its not that bad. Great clear and loud sound on all channels, it integrates with my samsung TV via an eARC HDMI cable so that I can adjust the volume of the receiver with the TV remote! Very convenient! If you buy this receiver make sure you connect it to your TV's eARC/ARC port (if supported)

Sony AVR’s are solid for anyone looking for a cheap but powerful unit, the only thing that bothers with with the unit and I believe it’s all of the Sonys is when your display goes black and comes back the receiver shows what channel your on example a black bar shows up at the bottom and it says gaming, the bar stays on for a few seconds, it’s annoying other then that it’s a solid unit

      Hi Joey,

Thank you for the feedback and we're sorry about the black bars of the AV receiver. Check the aspect ratio of the program or movie that you're watching. Some programs aren't in full screen when produced. Some movies are in a 21:9 cinema format which will show black bars on the top and bottom when you view them on a widescreen (16:9) TV. Some TVs and other devices don't have the capability to change the aspect ratio of a picture when they receive 720p or 1080i/1080p signals.

I went with Sony brand to ensure it would function seamlessly with my Sony x900e, and it seems to do that. On sale for $200, I feel that this was a good deal and fairly future proof. No wifi calling/streaming, just Bluetooth. That is okay for me together. Setup was easy, although I had to set my front speakers to "small" to make sure the output to the subwoofer was sufficient and the sub distance was too far using the auto calibration microphone. I think any receiver expects the user to be a little tech savvy though.

Here’s the thing, the receiver has a limited feature set, and that has caused some reviewers to rate it poorly. The problem with their view is that this is a budget friendly set, that has very good features for the money. What can you expect from this? Well you can run this in a 5.1.2 configuration for your Dolby Atmos or DTS-X needs, or you can run it in a 7.2 setup for a more immersive experience with a larger stage. You do not get pre amps and only a limited number of the connector support banana plugs. You get a sound tuning Mic that works fairly well with the receiver, and a visual interface for your TV, so you can see your speaker configuration right on screen and tweak the levels for all of them. As for the sound, well I find the entire setup sounds far better than the Bose 900, bass, and rear speaker package. Yet I paid exactly the same price as I would have for the Bose 900 and have far more flexibility with the speakers I purchased in that package. Overall, if you’re looking to build out a decent entry level Atmos setup, this is probably your best option and you will most likely enjoy what it delivers.

Bought this receiver about a month ago to build an inexpensive Atmos system. This is a "no-frills" receiver as in there's no internet or app support. Most people have that through a media box anyway. That keeps the cost down. As far as performance, I am more than pleased. It just works and works well. It's easy to setup too. The only downside is the outdated user interface. If that's another reason Sony can keep costs low on this unit then it's worth it.

Replaced a Onkyo receiver that was about 10 years old, mainly to get use of the 4K connections to 4K output to my projector (replacing the Onkyo 1080p). And finally the CEC power off works!!! It never worked with the Onkyo receiver. Not sure if it just wasn’t compatible or what. I can’t now turn it all on/off and the sound is great and was really easy to set up.

I bought this receiver because my Denon receiver stopped working and I wanted to still use my surround sound while the other receiver was getting repaired. I am not an audiophile. I simply like nice full sound. In comparison to my Denon receiver this unit is much easier to set up, it is much easier to use, it's about 2/3 of the cost. For my small 100 square foot screening room this works perfectly.

This is a great AV receiver, the sound quality you get out is immense. Glad I upgraded to Dolby Atmos, definitely worth it. My only gripe is if I connect my consoles too it I lose HDR and other display features. The still have to go into the TV and have the sound pass through the TV to the receiver. Still works but means two remotes for changing input source.
