Fantastic 4K 7.2 channel receiver!! Dobly Atmos / DTS-X, and all older surround decoding also supported, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, DTX-MA and more. Just got this receiver, it is replacing a 6 year old Pioneer, which at the time I thought sounded pretty good. This thing, on the same Onkyo 5.1 speaker set I have had for over 12 years, is fantastic!! This is the first Dobly Atmos receiver I have ever had, and you can define your two Atmos celiing speakers as ones that go on top of your front left and right speakers. So I added in my own smaller speakers, and defined them as such in the on-screen setup menus (you of course, can define them as regular atmos ceiling height speakers too). This reciever has 4 HDMI inputs, and all support 4K HDCP. I have a PlayStation 4, Xbox One X, Wii U, and an NVIDIA Shield hooked up to this receiver. Each input name on the front LCD screen can be changed too (but cannot happen on the TV interface display, just on the LCD screen on receiver itself). Now here was my biggest surprise, on the NVIDIA Shield, using KODI, it will pass thru (aka Bitstream) Dolby Atmos AND DTS-X surround tracks! I was really not sure how it would work, but it did, and my reciever lit up “ATMOS” and you can hear the atmos speakers go off. For those wanting to try it thru KODI on an NVIDIA shield you can go to dolby.com’s site, and download .mp4 files, and access it thru KODI, and you will see it passes thru the audio correctly. You can do the same looking up DTS-X test trailers if you google it, you will find short trailers showcasing DTS-X files you can play as well. Switching between the 4 HDMI inputs all works well, as does 4K UHD support from the Xbox One 4K and including HDR10 / Dolby vision pass thru support to the TV. The setup menus are a bit of a mess, though going thru them wasn’t that bad on the TV screen. I ran the auto calibration microphone thing that is included, and found that it actually detected about the correct distances between the microphone (set it where you ear level would be), I had to adjust a couple of the speakers a little bit, I found my center channel was a bit lower in volume than the other, and once I did that, it really sounded great. All my devices worked fine, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, Wii U, and the aforementioned Nvidia Shield! I hooked up my smart phone via Bluetooth, and that worked great too. The remote itself is not that great, but I have a logitech harmony 600. Unfortunately, as this receiver only just has come out, the Harmony software did not recognize this model yet. I am very confident it will get updated soon. The only thing I would say is to make absolutely sure you have HDMI 4K HDCP 2.2 cables between the 4K TV and each 4K device you have. Otherwise you will not get proper pass thru on HDR10/Dolby Vision content. I wish Sony had a better manual in the box, but there is a more detailed manual online on the Sony website, which gives much more detailed info, such as changing the name of the inputs on the LCD screen which I love that I am able to do. Be advised, this receiver does not have any component inputs at all, so if you have an older Xbox 360, or a Nintendo Wii, you will not be able to use this as a video switcher. Overall, very happy with this receiver!!

I received this product for my fair and unbiased review. TL;DR - The Sony STR-DH790 is a great start for those who want a home theater but don't want to spend a lot of money. While only sporting a few ports (4 HDMI inputs, NO FRONT PANEL HDMI, 4 analog audio inputs, NO PHONO INPUT, two digital audio inputs, no analog video inputs) and no network connectivity, it does feature built-in bluetooth and HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and support for the common HDR formats (HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log Gamma). Sound is crisp and clean, though it doesn't as as much power as a midrange or high-end receiver; two subwoofer outs and the ability to bi-amp your front speakers in a 2 channel or 5.1 channel setup is a nice touch, however; the bi-amping feature makes this a good receiver option for a listening room on a budget. On-screen prompts are easy to understand and concise. The only downfall is Sony didn't use banana plug-compatible speaker connectors for every speaker connection, just the front speakers. All in all, it's a good option for those on a budget that only have a few devices to connect (streamer box, Blu-Ray, cable/satellite box, and game console or living room PC). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Full review: Setting up the Sony was pretty easy. Being that I currently have a home theater receiver (Onkyo TX-NR717), I just removed my current receiver and connected the STR-DH790 (from here on out known as the Sony) in its place. The first thing I noticed was the lack of HDMI ports on the Sony; being that I was going from a midrange receiver to a low-end model, I did expect that I'd be short a port or two. I ended up moving my NES Mini and SNES Mini closer to my TV and just connecting them to the TV while I was testing the Sony. Note that you probably don't want anyone home while you do speaker calibration with this receiver; it's LOUD and it takes a little while to do. But once it's done, you find that it's worth it as your speakers will sound great after they're calibrated. I was using Energy Take Classics in a 7 channel configuration, using my rear surrounds as rear speakers and my surround channels (which are mounted over my seating area) as my Atmos/DTSX vertical channels. I also used a pair of Onkyo speakers that came with a HTIB I purchased over a decade ago just to see how it would perform with low-end speakers - it's nowhere near as crisp as it could be. For testing, I used a few Blu-Rays in the collection (Star Wars - the Last Jedi, Suicide Squad), a couple of movies from Vudu, Amazon, and Netflix (streaming through my Apple TV 4K), and Dolby Atmos and DTSX testing material played through my computer (Core i7 with a Radeon RX550 video card and HDMI set for bitstream audio output). The Apple TV and computer both support HDR10, and the Apple TV supports Dolby Vision, but my TV set (a Sony XBR850C) with the current firmware supports HDR10 and HLG, so the only HDR format I was able to test was HDR10. (Note - Sony TVs and receivers usually integrate with each other, but I didn't see if this did or not as the TV didn't make it obvious.) The results were spectacular, however. 4K HDR playback was flawless and the audio had a very encompassing feeling. While watching a streaming copy of Sing, my kid would look around the living room as the sound field fooled him into thinking he was in the Moon Theater. Bass management was also great, as the receiver pulled the audio too low for the Energy Take Classics to play and sent it to my subwoofer. The only complaint - and again, this is to be expected for this receiver - is it isn't as loud as my Onkyo can be, but since it's not as powerful, that's expected. Bluetooth functionality was also pretty good. While the sound quality isn't as good as AirPlay or direct playback, it's good enough for 90% of people. DSD and 192/24 audio files sounded amazing, considering the price of the receiver. The changes I'd make this this receiver: Banana jack-capable speaker connectors for all 7 channels 2 more HDMI ports, including 1 up front Phono connector Network connectivity Analog video conversion (2 composite, 2 component) Would I make this unit my daily driver? Probably not, as I like it loud. However, for anyone looking at forming the foundation of their home theater, this is a terrific start. The only word of advice I'd give you is don't skimp on speakers - honestly, better speakers make even low-end equipment sound better.

This receiver right out of the box sounds very decent. Setup was very easy IMHO. They have Easy Setup feature which incorporates a microphone that calibrates for optimum settings. I would say this is a very decent receiver for a budget shopper. The unit has 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output to the TV. This receiver also has NFC and bluetooth. If you want to get a 4k setup this receiver will help a budget shopper. One minor issue is you can't manually set the treble and bass so that is why I gave it a 4 out of 5. I like to adjust but Sony probably wants you to use the easy setup feature.

Full-Featured AV Receiver With Great Sound

Many years ago (in the late 1970s) someone made an offhand remark to me that I have never stopped thinking about - he said that the best single way to evaluate the quality of a sound system is to see how fully and richly it can produce low frequency sounds at low volume. Most systems cheat their way through this by including a subwoofer to handle all the low frequencies - everything is subwoofered these days. Well…everything except receivers where you provide all your own speakers. And for almost any configuration of speakers you might want to establish, the Sony STR-DH790 receiver has a configuration to help you out - it supports specific profiles for 24 different speaker combinations and placements - every conceivable profile from 2.0 to 7.1. And the comprehensive manual that accompanies the receiver provides a lot of guidance in selecting the appropriate configuration for your individual needs. Since most of my equipment is nice but quite old, the wealth of options was helpful since I have never owned a powered subwoofer. And in the process of experimenting with a few different speaker combinations, the first mode I tried was 2.0 (which we used to just call “stereo”). And in terms of what to expect in overall sound, that’s really the mode that matters the most since people tend to utilize simpler speakers for their surrounding array. And the sound I got in this simplest of modes was really impressive - I got bright and clear treble, fully realized midrange, and even that desirable ability to deliver full and rich lower frequencies at reduced volumes. Admittedly, my speakers are pretty large and date back to a time when speakers were expected to be able to deliver sound across the whole audio spectrum. And this Sony was able to drive them admirably. Modern sensibilities seem to dictate that smaller stereo speakers are the way to go - with the obligatory added subwoofer - but I’m glad that this receiver also allows me to enjoy great sound reproduction from my massive older speakers. Ultimately, as I added speakers to my configuration, I spent the most time trying to decide if the sound of 6.0 would give me a significantly better listening experience than 5.0 - for the time being, I went ahead and mounted everything for the 5.0 experience (which is amazing) while I continue to try more surround-intensive material with-and-without the added speakers. Once your speakers are placed and your surround mode is chosen, this receiver has a switchable sound field control to insure that your non-surround-encoded sources are reproduced faithfully. This prevents basic stereo sources from sounded artificially strung out while allowing surround sources to be faithfully directed to all appropriate speakers. So far, the sound with 5.0 is great - surround effects in movies always sound natural and well-placed. I like that changes in volume, adjusted either manually or by remote control, produce very incremental results - so it is easy to hone-in on a specific volume that suits your listening needs. All other manual and remote controls for this receiver are intuitive and easy to understand (even without the comprehensive manual). Finally, the available input sources for this AV receiver include four HDMI inputs and a surprisingly good bluetooth input. Bluetooth sources will always sound a little thinner than a source played through a direct input, but the DH790 really removes the disappointment I typically feel when listening to selections from my iPod.

Power reset the unit, simply unplug the unit and wait 1-2 minutes then plug the device back in and power on. After power reset, disconnect the cables between your TV and the home theater system or home audio system, and then reconnect them. Make sure the cables are secure at both ends.

Plus, you can enjoy superior picture quality to match with 4K HDR pass-through. You will enjoy an immersive theater-like experience in the comfort of your own home for a long time! Thank you for your purchase. Enjoy! Vincent Sony_US
