If you are looking for the latest 4K compatibility (with ample HDMI inputs) and the latest in sound decoding (DTS-X and Dolby Atmos) in an inexpensive compact design cabinet then this is your Home Theater Receiver. High power 7.2 channel capability, HDR 4K compatible and 2 subwoofer outs further compliment the feature set of this receiver. You can configure your speakers in many different ways including 5.2, configurations that take advantage of Atmos specific speakers and full 7.2 with 2 subwoofers (which I have done). Which brings me to my only complaint on the receiver...the main 2 speaker connections are banana plug capable but the rest are not, I guess at this price point, the features I described above are second to none but Sony has to compromise somewhere and that’s on the speaker connections for all the other speakers, which are the typical spring push down connectors that you insert your stripped speaker wire into. I had to remove all of my banana plugs on my other speakers. Setup is easy with the on screen prompts and Sony also makes it easy to calibrate your sound with Digital Cinema Auto Calibration for accurate speaker setup. Overall a great choice for your Home Theater but doesn’t get 5 stars from me only because of the lack of banana plugs in the rear.

This system is terrible! Thought that replacing my old Pioneer system with this unit would be easy. System wouldn't recognize my Bose Accoustmaster 10 system and had to change all of my HDMI cables or in order for the system to recognize each piece ( TV, PS5, DVD, & Roku). Still having sound issues with this system. Will Not buy another Sony Receiver.

      Hi twplum,

Thank you for the review and we do apologize for the inconvenience. When matching speakers and Audio/Video (A/V) receivers, the ohm rating of the speaker should be equal to or greater than the ohm rating of the receiver to avoid a risk of hardware damage. Any speakers that feature bare wire connection will work to this receiver, as long as their impedances are from 6 to 16 ohms.

Unable to calibrate my speakers ... repeated attempts result in error messages. I tried manually setting the speakers but it won't save the changes. Unit turns on / off with my Sony tv sometimes and other times won't. Very frustrating and wish I had bought another brand receiver.

Hi tomw, we are sorry to hear that you're unable to calibrate the speaker. This is definitely not the experience we'd like you to have. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn this into a better experience.

After connecting the calibration microphone device, make sure to set the microphone down on a flat surface and move away from the device so there are no obstructions between the speakers and the microphone while the calibration is taking place. Please check the Help Guide for more details:

For the second issue where the receiver turn on/off with your TV, sometimes it won't, please ensure that the Control for HDMI in both devices re set to ON. I bought one of these in January 28, 2020 and today March 19, 2025 it died after a horrible screeching sound coming out of the subwoofer. Up until today it was awesome. Great power and fidelity for this price point which was $299.99. I was expecting it to last longer than 5 years, but in fairness it is powered up an average of approximately 14-15 hours a day, so it has a ton of hours on it. That's about 27,375 hours. Honestly for 300 bucks that's not bad. In fact, I like this unit so much I am considering buying another one. They're 79.00 dollars more now which when I consider the performance and longevity is pretty cost effective.

    Decent but not for me

Let me preface this by saying I have only owned Denon receivers EVER. I purchased the Sony because there is a shortage of options out there and it got great reviews. Now, it's a great receiver for the undemanding and will do what you need it to do adequetly with no frills. I'd say it's fine for an entry level Home Theater hobbyist. It just wasn't for me. It's a little underpowered for my living room and the lack of a menu on the TV really bothered me. It has some great features but I ended up returning this and spending twice as much for a Denon that really was a much better fit for me.

      Hi WalterWhite,
Thank you for the time to write this review. While we are glad you like the STRDH790 AV Receiver, we regret to hear we were not able to meet your full expectations and unit had to be returned. It's unfortunate that we were not able to troubleshoot the issue and guide you through the steps to achieve optimum sound quality with the unit. The home menu can also be displayed on the TV screen. However, depending on the TV, the home menu may take some time to appear on the TV screen. For reference: https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdh79/v1/en/contents/TP0001553104.html

So I got this receiver for my loft because I already have a $900 Marantz in my living room. I have to say that this receiver for less than half of the price does exactly plus some than what my Marantz or previous Denon did. The start-up is easy and the onscreen display makes it very easy to adjust balances, frequency, etc. I can tell you the sound is not as crisp and balanced as my Marantz however the average person and my wife cannot tell any difference in sound. The features that this has are the same as the high end receivers. Atmos, 2 sub outs, ARC, Bluetooth, and lots of power. The one complaint I have is that the surround speaker inputs are the old clip ones vs. banana plugs like higher end models have. If you are in the market for a new receiver then this is the one for you!

Replaced a 6 year old Denon. Atmos is fabulous! Grabbed a few old speakers that were lying around for the height channels. Tested out with Last Jedi, Spider-Man Homecoming, and every other Atmos-enabled disc. Sounds absolutely crystal clear with my bookshelf Polk speakers. Even my wife, who normally couldn’t care less about audio, is really impressed with it and had me demo all sorts of movies, and with my 230 blurays, that’s a LOT to test! Works great with Netflix, Xbox, PS4, and all my other electronics junk. With everything plugged in via hdmi, everything turns on and switched perfectly. Told everyone at work about it, and several are interested in upgrading their old systems. If you want a good system, this is it.

Good sound but seems to have a hint of compression in some formats, if this is from the source it could use some dynamic range expansion compensation. Also seems to run a bit warm so be careful to provide proper ventilation, I don’t think it would like a square wave torture test. The STRDH790 is smart, it provides all the decoding and digital connectivity and is the best reason to buy at this price.

I replaced my old Denon receiver with sony STR DH790. Very impressive sound. I am loving my home theater more now. Remote works in any direction which I really liked it when compared to my previous denon receiver. Bluetooth turns on the receiver. Setup was very easy except no banana plugs to rear and center speakers. I don't understand why sony removed banana plugs when they had them in previous DH770 model. That is the only reason I am giving one star less.

The Sony STR-DH790 7.2ch Home Theater AV Receiver is a great top-of-the-line receiver that really does a great job of bringing everything together for an awesome home theater experience regardless of whether you have other high-end equipment to go with it (such as a 4k TV and 7.1 channel surround sound speaker system) or just a 1080p HDTV and 2-channel speaker system. Either way, this receiver does a great job of detecting your setup and unlocking its full potential with its auto calibration technology. The HDR and 4k pass-through mean you will not lose any picture quality by running both your video and audio through the receiver and I found this to certainly be the case. In addition, the built-in Bluetooth is an awesome feature that allows me to easily stream music from my phone. The only negative I have found is the lack of older inputs such as component and composite but this is to be expected considering that is old technology and everything nowadays is done through HDMI. The dedicated HDMI inputs make it easy to switch to the exact input you need since they are labeled (Media Box, BD/DVD, SAT/CATV, and Game). Long gone are the days of blindly switching between inputs to get to the one you are looking for. Overall, this is an incredible receiver that truly does it all and I highly recommend it!

I bought this new in February of 2024, after 2 months it started shutting down after getting hot from 1-2 hours of activity, i had the receiver in the open on a tv stand in my home theater. I even put a small fan to blow on it while it was in use, it still would shut down after getting too hot. Sooo, i sent it off to be fixed, after two weeks it was fixed(so best buy said). I got the receiver back and a week later, it started shutting down and not powering back up again. Im going to return it and get another 7.2 receiver....i have a 2-year old yamaha 5.1 receiver that is still working. Im probably gonna go with the yamaha 7.2 receiver next.

With two ELAC Debut 2.0 B 6.2 bookshelf speakers (only these) music and TV sound great, but stereo is not evident. Addition of an ELAC Debut C6.2 center speaker improves stereo effect, and dialog, but voices are less natural. With a center speaker (or subwoofer) only some so-called “sound fields” allow these speakers to participate. As “sound fields” are the only control one has over equalization, the tailoring of frequency response is limited. In general, a prospective buyer should consult the Sony on-line Help Guide (found at https://docs.sony.com/release//Help_4731211111.pdf) and learn the details of “sound fields” and speaker responses.

I bought this receiver to replace a 7 year old (Sony) unit that had DTSHD and TrueHD but did not support 4K. This unit does that, plus atmos I guess. Other than that it is inferior in every way. Mostly, the power supply is not up to snuff, if I turn on a fan the sound cuts out momentarily. It struggles to drive my 7.0 setup with two towers, so I can't imagine it would be a good choice for atmos. I do have a high load on this circuit, but the old receiver which delivered higher wattage never complained. The remote is cheesy. It does not sleep like my old model. Apparently no one needs more than 1 optical input anymore. Sony skimped on the surround terminals. I should have bought an hdfury instead. The only part I like is the bluetooth audio which I connected to an old phone. Unfortunately the bluetooth is best when the volume is set around 13 and TV requires 25-30. So I am constantly dialing the volume up and down. This might be a good starter amp for a small system with bookshelf speakers but I would not pay more than two fifty.
