It Likes to do the built in EQ sound which isn’t always the best. Also could use more speaker jacks. I’m giving 5 stars because it’s a fantastic entry unit and does exactly what it says it should!

The sound pass-through or quality is really sharp and there was no noticeable degradation in the sound quality from any of the sound inputs. It has ample connections allowing for inputs from many different audio devices or components. It has audio out connectors to accommodate speakers for each of the types of channels where the sound is being delivered. The selector and remote just work and are standard features. If you need a receiver with high-end functionality for a median cost then this is the one for you. I appreciate how simple it is and the Sony quality delivers.

Sony STRDH-790 review with Bose Acoutimass 6 Serie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I do like this receiver and upgraded from another Sony Receiver (STR-DN1040 that finally went out. Pro's, Easy to setup and connect your video and audio devices. I have a Xfinity X1 box connected to it and I can control the receiver with the X1 remote. Con's, I was disappointed with the lack of a 75 ohm coaxial connector for the FM antenna. You cannot connect an external FM antenna to this receiver. Instead you have a single wire which provides very bad FM signal reception. I get it that the technology is moving towards streaming but to take out a standard 75 ohm coaxial connector seem ridiculous. The video graphics when used to setup this receiver seems to be more blocky. My older receiver had much better graphics. It also fails the speaker calibration test with my Bose Acoustimass 6 Series V. This test worked on my older receiver. When it fails it is complaining about the bass setting with no explanation.

The Surprise of the Year

I bought I because I needed 4K HDMI inputs, but I was worried that the lower price meant lower quality. But it didn't. The performance and ease of use of this unit is exceptional. The center channel, which other receivers seem to muddy, is crisp and sharp. So, I am astonished and VERY happy

Great Surround

It is a good Amp with great base with or without my Sub Woofer. It has plenty power to drive good Surround speakers. I highly recommend this Amp. I had left Sony for a while when my First Sony Surround Sound Amp went out, but never again. Sony's have great separation of the sounds. I highly recommend this amp.

Its not large its compact size and 7.2 with Dolby Atmos which is just what i was looking for. So far the only negitive thing i can think of is the settings menu looks to be outdated it looks like something from the mid 2000s but it doesnt affect anything.

Return to Dolby Atmos mode glitch

If i am watching a dolby atmos movie from apple tv and if i accidentally chose 2ch, multi ch etc. It never reverts back to Dolby Atmos, it only moves around movie or listen options unless you restart Apple TV (probably valid for all sources).

There has been a shortage of AV recivers for over a year now. Sony recivers will never blow you away except for the top of the line, but are solid performers with good at their respective price points.

I like the sound, I like the processor but picture quality not there, I tried to keep it over my onkyo but couldn’t do it for the picture quality. And the speaker wire connection :)))) come on Sony. I forgot how hard to set up :)))))

While we are glad that you like the sound quality, we're sad to hear that you are not impressed with the picture quality. When you use high bandwidth video formats such as 4K/60p 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4K/60p 4:2:0 10 bit, a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, which can support bandwidth up to 18 Gbps, is required. Also. if your TV has similar menu for high bandwidth video format, check the setting on the TV menu when you set “SIG. FMT.” to “ENHANCED” on this receiver.
