This is hooked up to Definitive Technology Mythos towers with powered subwoofers built in, and Klipsch center channel and rear speakers in a 5.2 surround system with a Samsung TV and BluRay player. I have a separate HiFi system in another room for listening to music, so this is almost exclusively used for video. Watching HD video in surround sound, dialog is clear, the surround effects are fun, and the system can reach very loud levels with no appreciable distortion in our relatively small room. In fact, the low frequencies can be so powerful that the floor shakes (but that is mostly a function of the powered subs in the Mythos). My favorite thing about the system is that the simple remote control for the Samsung TV will control the Sony (and all the other components). One remote to rule them all!

I upgraded from an Onkyo TX-SR333 with basic wired front speakers and not very good surrounds to this Sony 790 and I went with 4 SS-CS5 for my front and rear speakers and I added the Sony SS-CSE upward-firing atmos speakers along with the Core Center channel. I got lucky with sales and I spent about $850 on the whole setup. My BIC Accustech 12" sub is perfect with this setup. My mind is blown. I think that the auto-calibration feature works alright but I'm having better results doing it manually with the help of a tape measure. I did use the db settings that the program came up with however. I only wish that I would have done this during the 2020 lockdown. Happy.

Great sound and easy to use. Has all the latest tech and features my old Yamaha didn't have.

Strong A/V amplifier, great bass, easy set-up and great sound.

The unit worked fantastic until it started turning off in " protection mode " .. I verified all my speaker cables multiple times, replugged them in one at a time but even with none plugged it would still shut off after a few minutes. It worked fine for 5 months, then started this issue a couple weeks ago. My AC is set to 72, the unit has a ceiling fan above it, i tried using that as well after reading online but still it rebooted. I put another receiver in its place to make sure my speakers, subs are ok and it worked fine. This unit sounded good, i didnt know a receiver could impact the sound so much, i am guessing I just got a lemon that has a failed capacitor or something inside. -- What I am disappointed with is that I paid the additional $60 for a geek squad warranty. I have no found out that Best Buy wont do anything until the sony warranty lapses. Sony has been a real pain to deal with, I sent the receiver to sony last week, and it will be 7-10 days until they send the replacement. I have been unable to use my home theater room in a week and a half, and probably have another week and a half to wait. I bought the warranty with the expectation I would avoid any inconvenience such as this. Otherwise - i think it is a great unit and look forward to the new one.

I bought this last week so I can have a good quality 4K receiver for the upcoming release of the PS5 and MAN did this not disappoint. Not only did it make my Xbox One S look great in 4K but even my classic PS4 (not the PRO) as well! I never seen the colors pop out so beautifully that I may have to re watch some films I own just to see the differences. On top of that, the sound actually makes you feel like you're in a movie theater. Hearing the Tie Fighters from a Star Wars film fly around and shoot their lasers or playing a multiplayer match on Call of Duty and hearing the enemy footsteps getting closer and closer never sounded so amazing. If you're wondering if you should upgrade and get this, do yourself a favor and please do. You will NOT be disappointed. Works great with my LG 60inch UJ6300.

I was looking for a Dolby Atmos receiver. I decided on this one mainly because it fit in my entertainment center . Do to my height restriction I was limited. So it sounds great. It lacks alot of features that an upper level receiver would have. The remote while it's functional will not work any other electronic device. (TV). There are very few input and outputs. Speaker line outs are spring loaded all except the front speakers. My 20 yr old Sony has better connectors and more inputs and outputs. So if you are looking for a no frills , good sounding Atmos capable system this is for you. Just read the specs before you buy. Because you may be disappointed. I am not . But I don't require alot.

Opened the box; connected to the new Sony 75" TV; turned on and the ARC(?) took over and I had my speaker system connected and working from the TV control. Really easy. Great sound and TV!

This Sony Receiver is awesome and perfect for all my needs. It's one of a few slim receivers that fit in narrower cabinet. The receiver is easy to use and sounds great!

Met all my expectations. Easy to setup. Sound quality is excellent. Pairs with my TV and PS5 with no issues.

This is my entry-level Home Theater Receiver that I paired with the Sony CS line of speakers in a 5.1.2 configuration and I love it. If you're looking to upgrade from a soundbar then this system will prove well worth it.

Better than I expected sound and picture might be better than higher priced receiver's my only complaint is i hate the remote very plain and dull

Got it for $199 on sale. Running 2 Bose 401’s (Front)2 Bose 301’s (back) Sony center channel and sub. Excellent! Had to manually set sub as calibration was not right but WOW! Using as 5.2. Can’t go wrong with the old Bose speakers either!

Great sound, easy to set up, linked up to the cable box and xbox seamlessly

This is a great receiver and was very simple to setup. Only real issue I have is that when you increase or decrease the volume, it appears on the television screen. I can see that happening if I used the television remote, but not the Sony receiver remote! This is very irritating and is very distracting when you increase or decrease the volume when watching a movie! This could probably be fixed with a simple firmware upgrade. I've seen numerous people, including me, post on the Sony site about this, but nothing is being done. I wish I would have known this before I purchased it because I probably would have looked at other receivers that don't do this. As a matter of fact, my older Denon AVR3300 didn't even do this, so come on Sony, fix it!

Everything works without hassle (HDMI CEC works fine for me referencing another review). 5.1.2, 145w, Atmos/DTSX, is more than enough speaker for any indoor home application.

Good receiver for the money. Easy to use and sounds good with my Bose cubes that Inhave had for ever. Has two sub outlets

Really, nice easy to setup ! Also it has the capability of having to to wireless subs, two ports on the backside. The remote is a little busy but is very user friendly. Definitely well worth the price.

Probably the best budget receiver on the market. Has everything you need unless you need HDMI 2.1 support, and is extremely affordable. The remote sucks, but otherwise great.

Great connectivity. Powerful audio. 7.1 setup was a breeze with the microphone. Gone or the days when I had to balance the speakers individually with a sound pressure lever meter. the 4K pass through is ideal. I was frustrated that the receiver kept shutting down every time I used my 4K DVD player. It was getting overloaded for some reason even with moderate volume. After many frustrating days, I discovered that my right front speaker connection had become loose and that caused the calibration to go out of balance for that channel. Keep that in mind if this happens to you. The only issue I have is that the receiver does not accept banana plug speaker connections. Other than that this is a gem.
