You got a lot of features and bang for your buck with this receiver. Dolby Atmos and DTS X support, along with the ability to connect to a 5.1.2 speaker setup is very impressive at this price. Another great supported area is dinner if the newer more advanced video features, including 4k, HDR (HDR 10, Dolby Vision and HLG). Sound Setup is easy for the most part. The included microphone listens at your sitting position and adjusts the speaker volume for the optimal experience. The sound quality is really good, especially if you have the option to take advantage of an Atmos setup. Be sure to set your input to the "enhanced" setting under the source format HDMI settings for HDR support on the receiver.
Pros: Features! Atmos, DTS X, HDR and 4k, easy setup
Cons: the lack of on screen menus for all options can be a bit frustrating at times.

I purchased the receiver when on sale for $299 and would've paid more honestly as it's packed with many features of the higher end models. I have this paired with Sony speakers I bought same day along with sub and have 8 total speakers including pair of Atmos speakers attached. It is plenty powerful for my application is a very large bedroom - even at 50% dialed in on volume. There were plenty of input options for me including speakers of course and 2 sub outputs. Auto calibrating speakers was a cinch and definitely recommend everyone do it.
With a full set of front, rear, center, sub(s), and 2 Atmos, I can tell you that the sound is immersive and you will appreciate movies/shows that allow for full use of a 7.2 setup.. I have a 5.1 setup in another room and this one is hands down better. I also never felt this unit lacked enough power to push my speakers. But I would not suggest putting this in a enclosed cabinet or putting something ontop where the vents are - this sucker gets hot after continued use as with any other electronic but you want to protect it.
I gave this a 4 star only because I can tell you that it does have a couple downsides..
Cons:
Display/controls: There is not a easy way to control the bass/treble of this unit and the onscreen display you use to adjust things is clunky and takes a lot of getting used to. You can adjust speaker levels, even size type and/or frequency but this too is cumbersome to do and felt Sony could have done a better job here.
Not many sound field options: I realize this is a $300-350 receiver and quite frankly one of the best you will find with the 7.2 + Atmos + Bluetooth features however, I felt Sony skimped on sound field options and could've given more options. I have a older-high end Sony receiver with more options than this one.
Remote: Well, it's a remote but lacking and felt more could have been on it to help ease the frustration of having to use a stupid display screen that takes forever to make adjustments on.

Great features and price! My friends are absolutely amazed with the sound and setup when they come and visit. The sound is phenomenal, particularly with the addition of the Dolby Atmos speakers above. I have it set as a 5.2.2 set-up (14x16 room). I have to give respect to Sonance as well. The 8 inch in wall/ceiling speakers compliment the receiver and set up well! Cannot find a better receiver with similar features for a better price.

This is an upgrade from an Onkyo 7.1 HTR I'd been using for about eight years. It was still working fine, but the time had come to upgrade to 4K pass-through and switching, along with Atmos. (The Onkyo didn't have integrated Bluetooth either.) The Sony sounds great and is pretty easy to use, though the user interface takes some getting used to and the amount of information shown on the display leaves something to be desired. HDMI ARC and CEC have also been a bit finnicky at times, but that is common and can't be blamed on a receiver that is a brand mismatch with my other components.
Overall the excellent value of this receiver among 7.2 Atmos receivers easily overcomes the complaints. I think this will get me through quite a few years.

I purchased this so I could finally start using Dolby Atmos. Setup is pretty straight forward using the on-screen menu and auto calibration mic. From there, definitely needed a little tweaking for preference but it sounds fantastic out-of-the-box. Excellent value considering that Atmos capable receivers are generally pretty expensive (in my opinion).
To enable Atmos, you have to use Dolby Atmos ready speakers AND configure/assign them as such in the setup menu to make sure you are actually "hearing" a Dolby Atmos broadcast. (You'll knoww it's working because the receiver will display "Atmos" as the active mode when enabled.) Is Dolby Atmos a super-noticeable difference? Not really...in my opinion. This receiver sounds incredible in several modes so there wasn't a huge difference in Atmos. However, at this price point I felt like I was getting some future-proofing in my setup.

I really like the sound that this receiver produces. It does a great job of playing music and movies and has more than enough power to drive my Klipsch satellite speakers and JBL Studio bookshelf speakers. The user interface could be improved because there are three different menus with each having some overlap and unique settings. That annoyance aside, the automated setup is user friendly and easy enough and I only had to change the size of my speakers from ‘large’ to ‘small’, and set the crossovers. The day-to-day operation is great! It interfaces seamlessly with my Roku Ultra and Samsung TV and I’m able to power up and control volume with just my Roku remote; I love this seamless integration. Unfortunately the Atmos output was defective so I returned the unit for a replacement but I’m sticking with the same model.

I’ve burned through several receivers over the last 20 years – and have kept upgrading my equipment to match the technology it drives – and this Sony DH790 is no exception as I needed it to handle my 4K TV and my first attempt at Dolby Atmos sound.
What is Atmos? It’s even greater surround sound – based on sounds objects vs sound channels. It’s been described as “To help deliver this vision, Atmos equipped cinemas have side speakers that start from the edge of the screen and go all around the auditorium, additional subwoofers and two speaker arrays going directly overhead. Since its launch Atmos has been installed on over 650 screens in 40 countries, including 9 screens in the UK, and 120 films have been made with Dolby Atmos soundtracks, including Gravity, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
One of the first things I noticed with this unit is the accuracy of the sound setup with the microphone. Set the microphone on your favorite seat and run through your speakers – it’s adjust the sound automatically and accurately – more than I can say for many of the receivers I’ve owned. As experienced with many other users, I can finally hear my rear speakers for both movie viewing and audio listening!
With more than enough power, 4K and 3D pass through features and very reasonable price – you can go wrong if you’re in the market for a solid receiver!

I purchased this receiver because I had purchased a home with a built-in entertainment center, but the people who built the cabinets made them very shallow in depth so I could not fit My Denon or Marantz AV receivers so I purchased this unit due to its size not expecting too much. I’ve been extremely surprised at the quality of the sound I am getting through the receiver. Of course, some of that has to do with the speakers and subwoofer I am using. Until I found this unit my option would’ve been a soundbar and I can tell you having tried it the sound coming out of this AV receiver is much much better . It’s easy to set up and I’ve had no glitches, especially with the e-arc connection and switching HDMI inputs, which were often a problem with my prior receivers. Anyway, I recommend this receiver highly if you’re looking for a good quality receiver in a more compact package.

Nice power , best value for the money
Setup is fairly easy. but some advanced menu items are buried and difficult to figure out. not very intuitive.
(Such as how the HDMI connection turns off the receiver when the tv is turned off or vice versa) these can be adjusted but took many tries to figure out.

Wow. Just how did this happen. SONY? Yep. So i paired this with their entire core series line of speakers and 2 of their subs. Sounds is better than i thought it would be. At $299.00 on sale this was perfect for pairing with their 6ohm speakers. I own a 120hz Tv so i didnt use the video passthrough and cant comment on that but the sound that this reciever puts out is really impressive. It looks good. The knobs are plastic not metal but in my opinion are fine. I had no issues with setup. If using a sub i reccomend setting all speakers to 80hz as small and boosting center channel to +3.5db. If using the Atmos modules i would boost those to +4.0db. Then sit back and let the good times roll. Movies sounded great. Music sounded like it should. This is about the reciever not the speakers but their core libe if speakers when on sale is a perfect match for this avr. At $448.00 for a 7.2 channel reciever able to do 5.2.2 this is a great buy. At $299.00 its a steal. Oh the blutooth works great. Devices paired and connected well tablets my Samsung Phone and Apple devices like ipads all worked. My pc connected too with no need to adjust video audio delay. Pretty impressive. Only thing it doesnt do is 4k 120hz but for 299 i wasnt expecting that. My denon s960h cost over twice that for the hdmi 2.1 feature. This is a great buy and a great product.

I purchased this to replace a Yamaha RXV381. Nothing wrong with the Yamaha, but I wanted Dolby Vision and Atmos. I've been a loyal Yamaha owner for many years, but their new 7.1 and up receivers are enormous. I have a 12u wall mount rack, which houses a Mac Mini, a Roku and a XBox Series X, so I didn't have the room for anything much larger than my old receiver.
I am running new Klipsch reference towers, an older Klipsch center and surrounds and a new Elac sub. Setup was fairly easy with the microphone - not as easy as the Yamaha, but it did a much better job. This system sounds FANTASTIC. I am using a new Roku Ultra for streaming, and the Sony sounds so much better than my Yamaha. Crisp clear dialogue, excellent surround and bass. This sounds better than AVR's that cost more than double - seriously. I haven't tried the Atmos yet, because my speakers are on order, but this is an A+ in my book so far.
The only minor criticism I have, is that the menus are a little confusing and take some getting used to, and the microphone is much flimsier than the Yamaha YPAO mic. But those are minor issues. I would recommend this AVR.

My Sony sound sound receiver died and I stumbled onto the Sony 7.2-Ch with Dolby Atmos 4K Ultra HD A/V receiver on sale. This unit was a higher end receiver than my previous unit and it was 4K. I purchased a 4K TV and had my eye on these units for a year. Getting it on sale was great. The unit has several HDMI outlets for a game system, DVD player, cable box. Now that I have the FIOS 4\One 4K cable box, I get great picture and sound quality. The only thing that I do not like is the remote. It is small with very few buttons and it is not backlight. The setup menu is tricky but I finally got it configured. Using the MIC to setup the speakers is a must. The only thing missing from this is being able to connect my bluetooth headphones to the unit via bluetooth.

I came from a 5.1 Yamaha receiver and wanted to upgrade to something that could handle ATMOS in 5.1.2 without breaking the bank. This receiver is a great buy.
I'm not sure why the Cal Amp menu couldn't be incorporated into an on screen menu. Just using the receiver display to navigate the options seemed clunky. There is an on screen menu for other options, so my not combine them. My old Yamaha had a much better menu system. Fortunately after you set it up, you're not going to be going into the settings often.
Getting 16 gauge speaker wire into the speaker push release connectors seemed slightly more difficult to insert than I would have expected. It fits with a little effort.
Overall, the receiver sounds great. If you are looking for an affordable amp to get into the ATMOS game, this is the receiver for you.

Awesome receiver. Has lots of features and pretty user friendly. It Can be setup automatically with the included microphone, or manually in the settings menu.
It has many settings in the manual setup such as Independent speaker channel control’s (Bass/Treble, Crossover Options, Speaker Placement, Speaker size, Distance, and a few more than i cannot remember at the moment)
It also has Support for multiple Setup configurations for using things like Dolby Atmos (5.1.2) Standard Dolby Surround (5.1 or 7.1) and many other Surround Sound Encoding options.
Lots of support for Audio and Video Input/Output (HDMI, Rca, AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth)
Overall a great device and would recommend.
And for anyone wondering about power output, it does really well, i use a Pair of Klipsch RP-280F Tower Speakers and they sound great and move to almost full potential depending the frequency.

If you have a PS4 Pro or other HDR game console/PC you will want to read the bottom section!
I went with this unit simply as it is the smallest 7.2 Atmos and Dolby Vision compatible receiver I could find, and I had a small area to work with. The technician at Best Buy told me that Sony receivers are not the greatest, so I got it with the intention of bringing it back if I was not happy with the sound quality. I was pleasantly surprised, however. If you are willing to sacrifice a bit of convenience in setup/configuration, and have another device to AirPlay or ChromeCast content, there is really no reason to spend more money than this for a small or medium sized room! I airplay through my Apple TV, and the CEC function of this receiver handles the power on/off and input switching when I send an airplay signal to the Apple TV. One thing that does concern me, is that about 1 in 10 times I will see white speckles on the video output when turning on and playing video from my Apple TV 4k through the receiver passed through to my TV. I am not sure if this is the Apple TV, a cable, the Receiver, or what, but it is fixed by simply sleeping the Apple TV to power cycle my equipment. As this never happens from any other device going through the receiver, I do not think it is an issue with the receiver.
Once you make it through the configuration of this thing, you should be able to set it and forget it. However, here are a couple things I recommend for you to check to make sure you are getting the most out of this.
1) Be sure to carefully read the manual for specific Atmos setup, because I realized a week or two into it I actually did not have everything configured properly for Atmos! It's a good idea to check your settings after easy setup, as mine weren't configured properly. The guide SONY has online is good, and has a few things to check. Just google "setting up atmos on str-dh790" and find the SONY help guide. Also, it's good to note that some sound field modes won't output Atmos sound. There is only a couple that it can be on to get true Atmos sound. The SONY help guide states that 2CH/MULTI: A.F.D. must be used but if you read the manual for this specific model, it says that the Dolby Surround sound mode works as well. To verify if you are outputting actual Atmos sound, you use the display button the remote to cycle through the display options. If none of these say "ATMOS" then you are not outputting Atmos sound. I've found that keeping it on Movie: Dolby Surround is best for me in all scenarios. This gives Atmos sound when the source has it, and it converts stereo or 5ch pretty well to utilize the height speakers and give a nice Atmos effect. I felt that music filled the room and was more immersive using Movie: Dolby Surround versus 2CH/MULTI: A.F.D. If you have it on A.F.D. then you will get Atmos sound when it is available, but it will not convert stereo or 5ch.
2) Be sure to set your HDMI signal format to "Enhanced" if you are passing through HDR or Dolby Vision. This was not set by default for me! If your TV thinks it is getting an HDR signal, it may still not be getting the best color depth possible. This is referenced in the manual as "Setting the HDMI signal format". THIS IS REQUIRED FOR PS4 PRO USERS TO GET 4k HDR @ 60hz as a possible output! To check what your PS4 Pro thinks it can output, go to Video Output settings on the PS4 console, and select “Video Output Information.” If you do not see 4k HDR 60hz as an option, then something is not configured right!
