||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Running klipsch bookshelves and sub off this receiver for my desktop setup it was easy to install and set up for my first time doing anything with home theater sound quality is very good for such a cheap price and pass through between my pc and firestick works great If you want to do a 2.1 run in stereo or you will have light dialog trying to use dolby mostly for lack of central channel on my part If you are using for pc with a monitor run tv out to your hdmi on monitor and run display port from your gpu to your monitor then switch to displayport input on your monitor doing this allows you to take advantage of the amazing audio and 4k up to 144hz not just 4k60 depending on your gpu and monitor of course

Happy with this budget friendly 7.2 4K receiver
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to use out of the box. I was able to quickly set up and replace my old non 4K receiver with this unit. It includes a setup microphone so it makes things even easier. Best bang for your buck for a 7.2 4K receiver.

A new standard in my movie watching.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went into my local Best Buy to purchase a receiver. Initially I did not even consider this particular unit. After physically inspecting the connections, I realized the online description is incorrect. This unit infact has two sub pre outs an a remote . Set up was a breeze with the on screen settings. Receiver has functioned flawless for me. I highly recommend to anyone seeking the best all around bang for your buck. Powers all 5 speakers an 2 subs I currently use. I’m currently looking for two ceiling speakers to fully use this receivers capabilities. At this price point, for the features you get. It’s a definite win win.

Fantastic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was easy, sound is great, power is more than adequate for the average home application, and the integration with the rest of my Sony equipment makes daily use a breeze. I rarely touch anything but my Roku remote/app now, because everything is integrated and basic features all work through the one elegant remote ui. My only complaint so far is the hard requirement for an off board subwoofer amp. I don’t mind buying a new powered sub, but I am disappointed to be unable to use my old unpowered one.

Excellent receiver for the money!
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sony has really redeemed themselves as of late with audio video receivers. They used to be considered more of a low budget line, but these latest models really prove otherwise. I bought this to replace a 20 year old Yamaha receiver that didn't support the latest surround sound formats. I have to say that I am impressed with the sound quality. This little receiver really packs a punch, and appears to reproduce sound very accurately. There are four things that keep me from giving this receiver 5 stars. 1. Why aren't all of the speaker terminals binding post terminals? Only the A main right and left channels have binding post connections. All other speaker connections use the cheap spring loaded design. This alone gives the appearance that the receiver is a budget receiver, even though it performs much better than that. 2. The remote feels cheap and is confusing, especially when it comes to switching between surround modes. The model above this has a completely different style remote that looks a ton better than this one. 3. The antenna connection isn't coaxial like every other receiver on the market, limiting your options for antenna upgrades. And the antenna it comes with is just a cheap length of wire. 4. The HDMI CEC implementation is just ok. When it works, it works great! However twice now since I have owned it, I have had to cycle power on the receiver to get it to accept HDMI commands from connected devices. It's almost like it gets stuck in a locked up state where it just won't respond to a connected device.

Perfect pairing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I absolutely love Sony products and have most my life. I had purchased STR-DH790 Multi Channel AV Receiver along with all the bells and whistles however now I’m wanting the 11.2 or better. I certainly recommend this. It’s perfectly paired with the Sony UBP-X800M2 Ultra HD Blu-ray™ / DVD Player, and the speakers for the final touch SS-CSE Dolby Atmos® Enabled, and Sony - Core Series Dual 5" 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker.

The Best Dolby Atmos/DTS-X receiver for < $400
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're looking for a Dolby Atmos/DTS-X receiver, but you don't have endless amounts of money to spend on it...look no further! Anyways, let me start by saying that I was replacing a Sony 6.1 receiver that I've had for 15+ years, but finally needed to upgrade beyond an optical cable. What's great is that the STR-DH790 is capable of doing 6.1, so until I'm ready to take the plunge and replace a bunch of speakers, it's almost literally just swapping cables and running the auto-setup. And the auto-setup is SUPER easy to do. Just follow along with the setup guide, do everything in the order it tells you to, and you'll have no problems. Keep in mind that if you have a powered subwoofer, set it to 50% power before you run the auto-setup with the mic. And make sure you're chosen the correct speaker setup on the receiver for your speaker arrangement, which for me was 6.1(SB). Also, make sure to look in the book on how to enable "High Resolution" on all of your HDMI ports after your setup is completed. It will make a HUGE difference in the sound quality coming through from your devices. One cool feature that I didn't realize was a thing...the eARC port allows you to control something like an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, from your TV remote, while it's plugged into the back of the receiver. And if you have a Fire TV Stick, the USB port on the back of the STR-DH790 is perfect for it, putting out 5V @ 1A. I was able to cut down on one more thing being plugged into my power strip by utilizing that feature. Love it! Unlike what one of the other reviewers said, it does actually work with CEC, but you have to have it hooked up to a TV that supports it as well. I'm using the eARC port to the ARC port on my TV, and if I turn my TV on, a few secs later the receiver turns on. And it does support at least 4K 60fps pass through...I'll be testing out 4K 120fps as soon as I can afford to upgrade my TV. Until then, rest assured that this receiver will handle pretty much anything you throw at it, and it will sound pretty darn good in the process. Enjoy it!!

Needs extra fans or will over heat at max.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First if you listen to this on max volume its going to over heat and shut off. I had to out 2 of my pc fans on it to keep it cool. I took it with me once, and had to run the ac to keep it working, and that was a 50 degree day with the window open. The sound quailty is good though, I use 2 klipsch book shelves, the 5.1 klipsch set, and 2 120 12inch klisch subwoofers.I use it for elder scrolls online with my pc through dolby atmos, does the surround great. Comes through all channels correct. Mind you in order for this to work, you will need intel and a high end mother board. The bypass on this reciever is low end, it can't do anything over 60hz, and it can't do 4k right either. It can do 4k 420 with no hdr. So what you need to do is hook your graphics card up to hdmi 1, then your intel onboard to 2, set it up as a second monitor open the dolby atmos app and tell it to use the intel, then switch back. I also use it for Amazon ultra hd music through my mother board optical port. Let me tell you if you listen to music this is better than anything you can get through Bluetooth, car recivers, or mp3. Mind you it doesn't go loud enough for 24 but sound but it does hit 100 dbs so 16bit works. I tried a mp3 the highest quality 360kbps, turned it all the way up and it sounded like all the speakers were blown. When I first got it, did the same thing with my Bluetooth phone. With Amazon HD music and optical out 16bit you can crank this to max and it sounds crystal clear. Mind you most people can't handle it, it hits as I said over 100 dbs. I also use it for dolby atmos blu rays through my Xbox, which makes it sound better than movies in the movie theater. I was watching pet cemetery and the tractor trailer went by my entire family jumped including me, and they weren't even watching it haha. I can't believe I use to listen to such low quailty, music, games, and movies. Want to add the microphone that is included is to automatically set up the 7 speakers, and subwoofers.

Big sound for a medium price
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Has everything i needed to upgrade my older 5.1 system. Sounds so much better and more powerful even though they had about the same power rating. Haven't used the Atmos feature yet as i haven't found the speakers i want to use. It was easy to set up and i used the auto program to get the 7.1 set up. I like the slim design, it fit in my entertainment center perfectly. For the price you pay it has a lot of value compaired to what you could pay for a unit with 7.2/Atmos.

Great Receiver for the price point
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This replaced an ancient Technics 5.1 Receiver (early model). The difference in technology is startling. Very easy to set-up with various components input via HDMI, switching is flawless between them all. The included microphone to adjust the speakers works better than my ears ever could. The sound field options are very good and there is plenty of adjustment if you so desire. Very happy with the purchase after my older receiver suddenly died.

Figured Sony knew what they were doing, so this was an obvious choice. Plugged in 65 in. Bravia tv, speakers, and sub. Couldn't have been much easier for a newbie like me. Amazing sound! This is an extremely good AVR at an amazing price!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this to replace a Yamaha RXV381. Nothing wrong with the Yamaha, but I wanted Dolby Vision and Atmos. I've been a loyal Yamaha owner for many years, but their new 7.1 and up receivers are enormous. I have a 12u wall mount rack, which houses a Mac Mini, a Roku and a XBox Series X, so I didn't have the room for anything much larger than my old receiver. I am running new Klipsch reference towers, an older Klipsch center and surrounds and a new Elac sub. Setup was fairly easy with the microphone - not as easy as the Yamaha, but it did a much better job. This system sounds FANTASTIC. I am using a new Roku Ultra for streaming, and the Sony sounds so much better than my Yamaha. Crisp clear dialogue, excellent surround and bass. This sounds better than AVR's that cost more than double - seriously. I haven't tried the Atmos yet, because my speakers are on order, but this is an A+ in my book so far. The only minor criticism I have, is that the menus are a little confusing and take some getting used to, and the microphone is much flimsier than the Yamaha YPAO mic. But those are minor issues. I would recommend this AVR.

Inexpensive, and sounds amazing!!!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had been wanting to upgrade my receiver to an Atmos one for quite a while, but they've always been far too expensive. I figured the price on this one was too good to be true, but after hearing a demonstration on my friend's system, I just had to go for it! For my setup, I'm saving money by using my aging 5.1 Onkyo speakers, with the FL & FR ones sitting directly on the floor. I also added a pair of Sony upward-firing Atmos speakers that sit right on top of them, since ceiling mounted ones weren't an option for me. Pros: + The initial setup is done onscreen, and it's fairly easy to get going. + The auto speaker calibration using the included microphone works perfectly. The whole thing takes a minute at most. + The Atmos effect is absolutely amazing! If you can, get one of the Dolby Atmos Blu-Ray demo discs to really show it off! You hear thunder coming from above the TV, with rain on the ceiling and all around...planes flying overhead...it's mind blowing! + It's extremely easy to pair a Bluetooth device to the receiver, with a dedicated pairing button right on the remote. Cons: - Turning on Atmos isn't easy. You have to change the output on the receiver itself to AFD mode, then go to the audio options menu from the home screen and change it to AFD as well (use Dolby Surround for normal viewing). If this hadn't been in the manual's troubleshooting section, I wouldn't have figured it out. I don't know why they didn't just put an ATMOS button on the remote!!! - 4K HDR is not enabled out of the box. You have to go into more settings and change each individual input (Game, Sat/Cable, etc) from standard to "enhanced". Otherwise, you're stuck at 1080p. I only found this in the troubleshooting, as well. - Many features are extremely counterintuitive. It's almost impossible to remember where everything is, so make sure you always keep the instructions nearby. - When you adjust the volume level, a slider appears on the TV screen, which is beyond annoying & completely unnecessary. No one likes that. If there's a way to turn it off, I would REALLY love it if someone could tell me how! As far as using Atmos, there is one HUGE thing to remember. The device you're playing from must be set to "Bitstream" or "Bitstream (Dolby)" in its audio settings. Linear PCM and DTS don't work with it. All in all, this receiver has a huge learning curve, and some settings can be a pain. Still, I don't regret getting it!

Display overlays menu screen upon EVERY power-on
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy set up. I would love to elaborate on how easy and simple it it is to set up and how there are no complex menus, however, I think this is its downfall. The entire idea of buying a simple receiver without complexities is that you want it to be transparent. In other words, you should be able to turn on your TV and have it just work, which it does, however, EVERY FRIGGIN TIME YOU TURN ON YOUR TV THIS ATARI LOOKING OVERLAY OCUPYS THE CENTER OF THE SCREEN AND WONT GO AWAY UNLESS YOU PRESS "OK" 2 TIMES FROM THE RECEIVER REMOTE Sorry for this stupid reason that could easily be fixed with a menu option that turns off screen overlay menus or makes them disappear after a few seconds or literally any other easy solution via software update. I can't bring myself to either recommend this product or give it 5 stars.
