Awesome receiver. Has lots of features and pretty user friendly. It Can be setup automatically with the included microphone, or manually in the settings menu. It has many settings in the manual setup such as Independent speaker channel control’s (Bass/Treble, Crossover Options, Speaker Placement, Speaker size, Distance, and a few more than i cannot remember at the moment) It also has Support for multiple Setup configurations for using things like Dolby Atmos (5.1.2) Standard Dolby Surround (5.1 or 7.1) and many other Surround Sound Encoding options. Lots of support for Audio and Video Input/Output (HDMI, Rca, AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth) Overall a great device and would recommend. And for anyone wondering about power output, it does really well, i use a Pair of Klipsch RP-280F Tower Speakers and they sound great and move to almost full potential depending the frequency.

If you have a PS4 Pro or other HDR game console/PC you will want to read the bottom section! I went with this unit simply as it is the smallest 7.2 Atmos and Dolby Vision compatible receiver I could find, and I had a small area to work with. The technician at Best Buy told me that Sony receivers are not the greatest, so I got it with the intention of bringing it back if I was not happy with the sound quality. I was pleasantly surprised, however. If you are willing to sacrifice a bit of convenience in setup/configuration, and have another device to AirPlay or ChromeCast content, there is really no reason to spend more money than this for a small or medium sized room! I airplay through my Apple TV, and the CEC function of this receiver handles the power on/off and input switching when I send an airplay signal to the Apple TV. One thing that does concern me, is that about 1 in 10 times I will see white speckles on the video output when turning on and playing video from my Apple TV 4k through the receiver passed through to my TV. I am not sure if this is the Apple TV, a cable, the Receiver, or what, but it is fixed by simply sleeping the Apple TV to power cycle my equipment. As this never happens from any other device going through the receiver, I do not think it is an issue with the receiver. Once you make it through the configuration of this thing, you should be able to set it and forget it. However, here are a couple things I recommend for you to check to make sure you are getting the most out of this. 1) Be sure to carefully read the manual for specific Atmos setup, because I realized a week or two into it I actually did not have everything configured properly for Atmos! It's a good idea to check your settings after easy setup, as mine weren't configured properly. The guide SONY has online is good, and has a few things to check. Just google "setting up atmos on str-dh790" and find the SONY help guide. Also, it's good to note that some sound field modes won't output Atmos sound. There is only a couple that it can be on to get true Atmos sound. The SONY help guide states that 2CH/MULTI: A.F.D. must be used but if you read the manual for this specific model, it says that the Dolby Surround sound mode works as well. To verify if you are outputting actual Atmos sound, you use the display button the remote to cycle through the display options. If none of these say "ATMOS" then you are not outputting Atmos sound. I've found that keeping it on Movie: Dolby Surround is best for me in all scenarios. This gives Atmos sound when the source has it, and it converts stereo or 5ch pretty well to utilize the height speakers and give a nice Atmos effect. I felt that music filled the room and was more immersive using Movie: Dolby Surround versus 2CH/MULTI: A.F.D. If you have it on A.F.D. then you will get Atmos sound when it is available, but it will not convert stereo or 5ch. 2) Be sure to set your HDMI signal format to "Enhanced" if you are passing through HDR or Dolby Vision. This was not set by default for me! If your TV thinks it is getting an HDR signal, it may still not be getting the best color depth possible. This is referenced in the manual as "Setting the HDMI signal format". THIS IS REQUIRED FOR PS4 PRO USERS TO GET 4k HDR @ 60hz as a possible output! To check what your PS4 Pro thinks it can output, go to Video Output settings on the PS4 console, and select “Video Output Information.” If you do not see 4k HDR 60hz as an option, then something is not configured right!

New to a "home theater" set-up. Figured Sony knew what they were doing, so this was an obvious choice. Plugged in 65 in. Bravia tv, speakers, and sub. Couldn't have been much easier for a newbie like me. Amazing sound! If you're interested in diving into creating a theater sound in your home, i highly recommend this receiver as base of your system.

Recently bought a 4K Sony UHD TV and was not getting the full 4K experience due to an older HDCP S/W version on my STR DH- 750 (which is still great). The best pass thru resolution with my older receiver was 1080P, and the signal would start degrading when I increased the TV's resolution to 4K. The 790 supports HDCP 2.2, which is the full 4K UHD, and is similar to the 750, but it has more features which enhance the listening experience, I have a 7.1 sound configuration, and the bang for the buck that the receiver provides is well worth the investment. Highly recommended, there is learning curve with the new features and a little patience goes a long way.

Running klipsch bookshelves and sub off this receiver for my desktop setup it was easy to install and set up for my first time doing anything with home theater sound quality is very good for such a cheap price and pass through between my pc and firestick works great If you want to do a 2.1 run in stereo or you will have light dialog trying to use dolby mostly for lack of central channel on my part If you are using for pc with a monitor run tv out to your hdmi on monitor and run display port from your gpu to your monitor then switch to displayport input on your monitor doing this allows you to take advantage of the amazing audio and 4k up to 144hz not just 4k60 depending on your gpu and monitor of course

I absolutely love Sony products and have most my life. I had purchased STR-DH790 Multi Channel AV Receiver along with all the bells and whistles however now I’m wanting the 11.2 or better. I certainly recommend this. It’s perfectly paired with the Sony UBP-X800M2 Ultra HD Blu-ray™ / DVD Player, and the speakers for the final touch SS-CSE Dolby Atmos® Enabled, and Sony - Core Series Dual 5" 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker.

Sony has really redeemed themselves as of late with audio video receivers. They used to be considered more of a low budget line, but these latest models really prove otherwise. I bought this to replace a 20 year old Yamaha receiver that didn't support the latest surround sound formats. I have to say that I am impressed with the sound quality. This little receiver really packs a punch, and appears to reproduce sound very accurately. There are four things that keep me from giving this receiver 5 stars. 1. Why aren't all of the speaker terminals binding post terminals? Only the A main right and left channels have binding post connections. All other speaker connections use the cheap spring loaded design. This alone gives the appearance that the receiver is a budget receiver, even though it performs much better than that. 2. The remote feels cheap and is confusing, especially when it comes to switching between surround modes. The model above this has a completely different style remote that looks a ton better than this one. 3. The antenna connection isn't coaxial like every other receiver on the market, limiting your options for antenna upgrades. And the antenna it comes with is just a cheap length of wire. 4. The HDMI CEC implementation is just ok. When it works, it works great! However twice now since I have owned it, I have had to cycle power on the receiver to get it to accept HDMI commands from connected devices. It's almost like it gets stuck in a locked up state where it just won't respond to a connected device.

I went into my local Best Buy to purchase a receiver. Initially I did not even consider this particular unit. After physically inspecting the connections, I realized the online description is incorrect. This unit infact has two sub pre outs an a remote . Set up was a breeze with the on screen settings. Receiver has functioned flawless for me. I highly recommend to anyone seeking the best all around bang for your buck. Powers all 5 speakers an 2 subs I currently use. I’m currently looking for two ceiling speakers to fully use this receivers capabilities. At this price point, for the features you get. It’s a definite win win.

Setup was easy, sound is great, power is more than adequate for the average home application, and the integration with the rest of my Sony equipment makes daily use a breeze. I rarely touch anything but my Roku remote/app now, because everything is integrated and basic features all work through the one elegant remote ui. My only complaint so far is the hard requirement for an off board subwoofer amp. I don’t mind buying a new powered sub, but I am disappointed to be unable to use my old unpowered one.

If you're looking for a Dolby Atmos/DTS-X receiver, but you don't have endless amounts of money to spend on it...look no further! Anyways, let me start by saying that I was replacing a Sony 6.1 receiver that I've had for 15+ years, but finally needed to upgrade beyond an optical cable. What's great is that the STR-DH790 is capable of doing 6.1, so until I'm ready to take the plunge and replace a bunch of speakers, it's almost literally just swapping cables and running the auto-setup. And the auto-setup is SUPER easy to do. Just follow along with the setup guide, do everything in the order it tells you to, and you'll have no problems. Keep in mind that if you have a powered subwoofer, set it to 50% power before you run the auto-setup with the mic. And make sure you're chosen the correct speaker setup on the receiver for your speaker arrangement, which for me was 6.1(SB). Also, make sure to look in the book on how to enable "High Resolution" on all of your HDMI ports after your setup is completed. It will make a HUGE difference in the sound quality coming through from your devices. One cool feature that I didn't realize was a thing...the eARC port allows you to control something like an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, from your TV remote, while it's plugged into the back of the receiver. And if you have a Fire TV Stick, the USB port on the back of the STR-DH790 is perfect for it, putting out 5V @ 1A. I was able to cut down on one more thing being plugged into my power strip by utilizing that feature. Love it! Unlike what one of the other reviewers said, it does actually work with CEC, but you have to have it hooked up to a TV that supports it as well. I'm using the eARC port to the ARC port on my TV, and if I turn my TV on, a few secs later the receiver turns on. And it does support at least 4K 60fps pass through...I'll be testing out 4K 120fps as soon as I can afford to upgrade my TV. Until then, rest assured that this receiver will handle pretty much anything you throw at it, and it will sound pretty darn good in the process. Enjoy it!!

First if you listen to this on max volume its going to over heat and shut off. I had to out 2 of my pc fans on it to keep it cool. I took it with me once, and had to run the ac to keep it working, and that was a 50 degree day with the window open. The sound quailty is good though, I use 2 klipsch book shelves, the 5.1 klipsch set, and 2 120 12inch klisch subwoofers.I use it for elder scrolls online with my pc through dolby atmos, does the surround great. Comes through all channels correct. Mind you in order for this to work, you will need intel and a high end mother board. The bypass on this reciever is low end, it can't do anything over 60hz, and it can't do 4k right either. It can do 4k 420 with no hdr. So what you need to do is hook your graphics card up to hdmi 1, then your intel onboard to 2, set it up as a second monitor open the dolby atmos app and tell it to use the intel, then switch back. I also use it for Amazon ultra hd music through my mother board optical port. Let me tell you if you listen to music this is better than anything you can get through Bluetooth, car recivers, or mp3. Mind you it doesn't go loud enough for 24 but sound but it does hit 100 dbs so 16bit works. I tried a mp3 the highest quality 360kbps, turned it all the way up and it sounded like all the speakers were blown. When I first got it, did the same thing with my Bluetooth phone. With Amazon HD music and optical out 16bit you can crank this to max and it sounds crystal clear. Mind you most people can't handle it, it hits as I said over 100 dbs. I also use it for dolby atmos blu rays through my Xbox, which makes it sound better than movies in the movie theater. I was watching pet cemetery and the tractor trailer went by my entire family jumped including me, and they weren't even watching it haha. I can't believe I use to listen to such low quailty, music, games, and movies. Want to add the microphone that is included is to automatically set up the 7 speakers, and subwoofers.

Has everything i needed to upgrade my older 5.1 system. Sounds so much better and more powerful even though they had about the same power rating. Haven't used the Atmos feature yet as i haven't found the speakers i want to use. It was easy to set up and i used the auto program to get the 7.1 set up. I like the slim design, it fit in my entertainment center perfectly. For the price you pay it has a lot of value compaired to what you could pay for a unit with 7.2/Atmos.

This replaced an ancient Technics 5.1 Receiver (early model). The difference in technology is startling. Very easy to set-up with various components input via HDMI, switching is flawless between them all. The included microphone to adjust the speakers works better than my ears ever could. The sound field options are very good and there is plenty of adjustment if you so desire. Very happy with the purchase after my older receiver suddenly died.

This replaced an older Onkyo Hrt420. I upgraded my speakers to Polk audio a while back and this receiver brought them to life! Super clear sound, more than loud enough and it has Atmos. I was able to use some older speakers for height and this thing thumps! I was debating going back Onkyo but the price was too attractive to pass up as I was on a budget. So far I'm happy with this purchase
