Very nice player but recommend buying extended warranty. Because my power went out a little over a month after purchase and killed it. Everything else on same power protection fine. Out almost $300 now. Unit is too sensative to power fluctuations.

After a poor experience with Samsung and still no Atmos support on Xbox One I was happy to find that the Sony X800 is virtually flawless for my needs - those being playing 4K uHD discs and the occasional 1080p BD. Don't really care about apps. My Sony 940D has all those already. As a disc player the setup was easy, load times are fast and there is a nice resume feature. Was startled the first time the entire front flipped down for a 5" tray. Also - ATMOS listeners will need to toggle a certain setting (forget the name but it's 3rd one down list) to send pure bitstream for Atmos playback. Took me 40 mins to figure that one out. Odd that player would ship with Atmos defaulted to disabled. Watched a dozen movies already; Batman, Hunger Games, Bourne, Suicide Squad, San Andreas, Magnificent 7, Star Trek(s) and they ALL look incredible and sound amazing. GREAT player at a very fair price. Xbox offers gaming for same money but I've never watched a movie on Xbox that didn't have skipping and/or lip-sync issues and still no Atmos till April update. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

This product lasted just over a year before quitting. Without a Best Buy warranty the only option was to send it to the manufacturer for a possible repair. The cost of all this was prohibitive so the unit ended up being even too big for a paperweight. Needless to say this has soured me on Sony products. (I had the same problem with a Sony soundbar which just suddenly stopped working after 19 months. That unit again was prohibitively expensive to try and repair without a Best Buy warranty.) Moral of the story: beware Sony products and if/when you buy get an extended Best Buy warranty.

Wow what a disappointment. 2 players same issues. Both locked up during Bluray playback and CDs would stop playing all of a sudden. What the heck Sony. This player is heavy and fit perfectly in my rack. Looked and sounded great but just couldn't make it through a disc without a problem. Had to get the cheaper 700 which seems to work without any issues.

Purchased 19 months ago along with Sony Bravia 4K UHD Android TV. Big bucks. BD player came highly recommended by Best Buy CSR. From the start it would take a while to recognize an inserted disc but I didn't think it was a big deal. Now it will not play ANY BD or 4K disc. Will play regular DVD. Guess the laser is shot, most likely not fixable from what I've read, and now it's useless. Thought I was buying top notch product because it had the Sony name. Never again. Now hoping my $1200 Sony TV lasts longer.

I bought this higher dollar player and was very happy with it... Until it broke and was defective. I went to turn on 1 day and it kept cycle from the boot up to the “Sony” screen and nothing after. After speaking with Sony, they deemed it needed repaired. However they stopped producing parts for this model. BB repair shop said they might be able to fix but required a non refundable fee. So if no fix, out more money. For a higher dollar until, I expected it to last more than 2 years.

Amazing features when it doesn’t have a power issue. About once a week, it won’t power on until you unplug it and then re-plug back into the power socket. Had it for about 4 months so far.

This model has a history of freezing and the only way to correct it is to unplug it. It frequently refuses to shut off with the same solution. I have to pull my entire entertainment center away from the wall to do that!. I returned it to SONY, and they sent me a replacement with the same problem. After going to their website, I found numerous people had the same problem. They refuse to refund the purchase price AND think it acceptable to send refurbished product at their discretion. BE WARNED! $250 wasted!!!

Don't buy this Sony TV! I bought one last June and it stopped working--dead. Sony's warranty? Take it to a shop in Stockton. Called the shop: Bring it in, but I can't promise anything before 4 to 6 months. Being a long-time Sony customer, I thought it was a fluke, so I bought another one in December. It stopped working to day: Mar 3, 2021. I'll see whether the Geek Squad can resurrected if not, I'll shop for another one. Anything but Sony!

I've had this player since march 2017 I was lucky to be one of the first people to get my hands on it. this is an excellent 4k player I haven't had any issues with it so far except one time when my disc froze but ill blame that on the disc itself since it was a redbox rental no issues with my personal collection. this player plays just about every format you can possible have. the interface is not mind blowing and not the best from the other 4k players but its simple enough to navigate through the few apps it has I have a 2017 Sony tv so honestly I don't even use those apps and can careless for them and instead use the apps from TV. one thing I notice is that the picture setting under options from controller is set to AUTO I recommend you change that to DIRECT as this will send an uncompromised picture the way its meant to be seen from your own tv calibration. another recommendation is if you have a Sony tv with their top of the line x1 extreme processor I recommend you turn off 4k upscaling from the player this will allow your tv to do the processing to upscale something the tv does better then the player any other tv's play around with setting. check for updates every so often, recently the player came out with a new firmware update on 8/9/17 to improve disc playback, improve intense color quality on HDR playback and improves compatibility with OLED tv so if u have any issues update the player. I really hope the player gets a dolby vision update along with the new Sony tv top 3 models just to have the complete package and I'm sure it will sell even more then it has. final thoughts 4k movies look spectacular in HDR, blu rays upscale to near 4k regardless if u let the player or tv do the upscale because remember this is Sony upscaling praises to the engineers. the build on this player is solid and build like tank and doesn't feel cheap. for $300 its a no brainer look no further unless u find the Oppo for the same price but if Sony gets the dolby vision update on the player don't even think of spending more money for the oppo because thats the only advantage the oppo has against the x800 in my opinion. hope this review and tips helps :)

I purchased this 4K Blu Ray player and needless to say was disappointed. It played a regular Blu Ray Disc fine but when it came to a 4K Blu Ray disc picture would skip and become diluted. I return this Blu Ray player a day later and exchanged it for the Samsung model which I am pleased with and highly recommend.

I have owned this player for 381 days. After just over a year of very light use the tray no longer opens. I used it primarily to play my SACD and DVD Audio discs once or twice a month. It did that very well and I was very happy with it until today. I don’t think I ever used it to watch a movie. $300 for a device that fails after only one year of use is way overpriced...

I purchased this 1st unit for around $400. After about 2 months it would stop 10 minutes into the movie and power down. I returned it and got a replacement and 2 weeks after that this machine began to power down the same way. This time the unit is only valued at $200 so in addition to losing the warranty twice I've lost $200 in value on the machine and have nothing to use.

Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings about this player. It is well-built and heavy; it does not feel cheaply made. The picture quality is amazing no matter what type of disc it plays and all the apps seem to be working fine. I have bought it the week before Thxgiving so I have had it for only about a month. Unfortunately, I have had issues from the very beginning. When I stop the disc, the menu starts to flicker. It happens randomly, not all the time. It usually happens at menu screen and not during playback (although it happened once during playback). I have also Samsung 4K player which I can compare against using the same cables, TV, etc. and I have not had this issue with Samsung 4K player. I tried expensive cables, and cheap cables. The issue seems to go away but comes back. I have updated the firmware both on the player and also on my LG OLED TV. The issue has not completely gone away. And last night, the player froze. I had to unplug it and plug it back in to fix it. Now these issues do not happen all the time. Yesterday, I played discs for straight 10 hours and this happened at the end of the night. But I still think a player of this quality, manufactured by Sony, that has $300 retail price on it should not have any issue of picture flickering or freezing. There is the technology of 4K picture quality, Wi-Fi connection, all kinds of apps, but then the simple basic operational functions fail to perform consistently. I think it is unacceptable. However, I seem to be in the minority as almost 95% of the reviews are highly positive. So maybe there is something defective about my unit. I wonder if the 5-star reviewers have never experienced any issue with their players (or they do but don't come back to edit their review?). I have read threads on Sony's website about the freeze issue so there are other people. At this point, I am contemplating either exchanging with another unit or getting another 4K player. I will give it a week or two before I make a decision. I have owned two other Sony Blu-ray players in the past and I was quite happy with their performance. They also did freeze but very rarely (and after many years of operation not within the first 2-3 weeks of purchase) and never had picture flicker issue. For the first time in my life, Sony has failed to meet my expectations. I have always owned Sony products ever since I was a kid and it is a brand I have to come to trust over the years but I am not so sure anymore. If I do exchange it with another and don't experience the same issues, I would be happy to edit my review. I am not going to contact Sony because I have purchased BestBuy protection for 2-years.

Good Blu-Ray player, but a weak media streamer

The Sony UBP-X800 is a fine Blu-Ray player, but it’s a rather disappointing media streamer. The first thing you’ll notice upon unboxing the Sony UBP-X800 is that it’s big. It’s a surprisingly large device with a fair amount of heft to it. Even the remote is surprisingly big. While the face of the remote is fairly short and slim, the body of the remote is a good half inch thick, slab of plastic. Setup was simple enough. Plug in an HDMI cable, plug the unit into a surge protector (or the wall if you’re feeling adventurous), and follow the on-screen setup guide. Factoring in an immediate software update, the device took about twenty minutes for me to setup. The built-in streaming options are . . . underwhelming. The device comes pre-loaded with a Pandora App, a Netflix App, a YouTube App, the Opera Channel Store, and a handful of other assorted apps that aren’t terribly memorable and that you’ll likely never have cause to use. There is no web browser included. The Opera Channel Store feels very cheap and unpolished. The app selection is sparse and not terribly appealing. The major networks and cable providers aren’t represented at all. Using the YouTube app started out okay, but I quickly had some problems with it. I was watching a video when suddenly the action on the screen froze. Audio continued out of sync for a couple seconds before it stopped too. A second or two of a loading screen later, the video resumed. This happened several times. At one point, the player locked up completely and the loading screen froze up. After five minutes of poking at the remote and the machine’s power button, I finally opted to unplug it and plug it back in to try and get past this. It should be noted that I have an AC router, a mid-tier cable internet plan, and the player is maybe three feet away from the router. I don’t believe that the problem is my internet connection. It should also be noted that performance did improve some on subsequent uses with the stutters occurring much less frequently. I was pleasantly surprised that the player was able to see my media server on the same network. Despite a menu option for viewing items by folder, the device didn’t appear to recognize my folder setup (sorted by genre). It listed the folders themselves correctly, but the contents it listed inside of the folders were not at all accurate. It was able to view all of the files on my server though in file list view, and it played them without a hitch. I played a couple Blu-Ray disc without issue. There wasn’t anything particularly remarkable or noteworthy about the Blu-Ray playback. I inserted the disc, and it played the disc without issue. Image quality was incredible, video playback was smooth, audio was crisp and loud, and menus were quick to respond. The device touts that it supports miracast. This isn’t a standard that any of my other devices currently use, but it’s a nice feature that I may take advantage of at some point in the future. Given my experiences with the performance of the YouTube app though, I do have some reservations about this device and potential latency issues. Given its rather underwhelming performance as a media streamer, I'm sorry to say that I probably wouldn’t recommend this device to a friend. It’s a nice enough Blu-Ray player, but there are probably better ways to watch YouTube and Netflix.
