Great 4K Blu Ray Player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great upgrade from my old standard Blue-Ray player. The Blu-ray player is fast, unlike my older Sony model, turning on and starting Blu-Rays in seconds vs. minutes. The addition of network channels like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu means I can move an older Roku player I had to a spare TV in the guest room and use this, so an added bonus I can reduce my device count and remotes needed. It streamed just as well as Roku, without any issues in my tests and the picture was great. It was responsive so I was happy with that. Additionally it found my NAS on the network and I was able to connect to that and stream some of the videos I have of the kids without any issue. Again a great bonus as I can once again reduce my device count in the living room. Playing BluRays I have no complaints. As I stated, it started quickly and I was able to get right into the videos without an issue. Picture was great and played without issue which is what I want in a BluRay player. This is a top notch device and if you are looking for a single device to do a lot and give you a great picture in an easy interface this is the device. As an added touch Sony added a Miracast (Screen Mirroring) to the device so you can connect your Android Phone and PC to your TV to show pictures etc. Again nice add one. The one add-on though that sold me though was the Bluetooth connectivity. I can pair my Bluetooth headphones and listen to the movie late at night without waking the household. This is an awesome feature that I wasn't expecting that made this device 5 stars for me. Being able to connect my headphones, and watch my content on my TV with out worrying about the waking the house is awesome. Top notch feature that I hope to see more of in the future. Again if you need a 4K BluRay player. This is the one.

Great player at excellent price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ive tried the Samsung, the Philips, have the Panasonic, and now the Sony. Streaming apps from Netflix and Amazon work well, look great and are output at 24hz. PQ and playback of 1080p and 2160p discs have been great so far. Seeing as it has only had one major FW update, Sony will continue to make this player a leader I have no doubt.

Awesome but one major gaff needs correction
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am very impressed with the build quality, loading speed, picture quality, and sound quality of the X800. Super nice Universal player that is one of the very few current models on the market that can play SACD and DVD-Audio in addition to BluRay, DVD, and CD. The X800 is quite a bargain since it compares well to the Oppo 203 in many ways for less than half the price. My rating would have been 5 stars except for one very puzzling decision Sony made within the operating system of the X800. I am primarily a 2 channel audiophile but also use my system occasionally to watch movies with my projector. When watching movies, I connect the X800 to my surround processor via HDMI, and sometimes also use the X800's HDMI output to listen to multi-channel SACDs in their native DSD format through my HT system . But, when listening to 2 channel music, I sometimes use the X800's S/PDIF (coax) output to feed my 2 channel hi-end DAC's S/PDIF input. Herein lies the one major disappointment with the X800: when playing SACDs with the X800 feeding my DAC via the S/PDIF coax output, the X800 requires me to go into the setup menu and change the "Digital Audio Output" setting to PCM in order to get any signal output from the X800's coax output to my DAC. Problem is, this also automatically changes the HDMI output to PCM, so if I then wish to listen to SACDs in their native DSD format through my processor via HDMI, I have to go back into the menu and reset the "Digital Audio Output" setting to "Auto". Each time the setup menu is accessed it requires play be stopped and the disc ejected to access the X800's setup menu. This is a major inconvenience and completely unnecessary!! WHY DID SONY DO THIS? Based on licensing agreements, DSD can only be output via HDMI due to its copy protection and thus the DSD signal ALWAYS HAS TO BE CONVERTED TO PCM for the S/PDIF(coax) output path. It's been that way since the inception of SACD players by Sony themselves!! So, Sony's firmware should automatically convert DSD signals to PCM when using the coax output without having to go into the setup menu and change this settings every time I wish to go from DSD via HDMI to PCM via S/PDIF (coax). The engineers at Sony didn't think this through. Sony really needs to release a firmware fix for the X800 ASAP whereby DSD is converted to PCM automatically when fed to the S/PDIF coax output while still allowing the DSD signal to be output via the HDMI output without the need to access the setup menu each time. Other than that one major gaff, this is a very impressive piece of gear and a huge bargain at its price point. Highly recommended!

Strong Contender in an Oversaturated Market
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Blu Ray player has the features and looks you want in an above average blu ray player. Picture looks better than an older model this one replaced. Speed navigating around the apps and menus is great. I use this mainly for Blu Rays and Netflix, and couldn't be happier. I have always trusted Sony as a brand, and it seems everything Sony I have bought has no problem lasting. This product seems to be built with that same great quality.

Mostly great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Build quality, picture and sound quality are excellent. Love that it's a universal player, in that it supports hi-res formats such as SACD and DVD-Audio, allowing me to replace two players with this one. Quieter and smoother disc operation than the Samsung 4K player. The only problem I've encountered is that with the one 4K Blu-ray movie that is recorded in 4K/60p (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk), the player will not send an HDR signal to the TV, so color is very desaturated. During the features and menus on the disc, which are in 24p, HDR signal works fine, but as soon as the movie starts and it switches to 60p, the player turns HDR off. The first firmware update was installed on 3/2/17 but did not fix the problem. Note that the disc plays perfectly, at 60p with HDR, on my Samsung player. I have a service ticket in with Sony and they claim they will research this issue; hopefully a fix will happen soon via a firmware update so that this and any 60p discs potentially released in the future will play properly. Otherwise, it's a great player and handles all the other discs I've tried flawlessly.

Not Sure What it Wants to Be
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While this is a solid player I feel like it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a 4K player with some audio functionality bolted on? Is it an audiophile multi-disc player with 4K playback added? As a 4K Blu-ray player it does an acceptable job. Watching Deadpool in 4K produces excellent results in HDR, with vivid colors and good details. As a multi-disc player (which was my main interest) it falls flat. It will accept just about any Hi-Def audio format via optical disc or through the front USB port, or even over a network if you have a DLNA server set up. Playback is simple while navigation is a little slow. The huge disappointment, however is that there are no analog audio outputs of any kind. In fact, you're limited to HDMI (there are two HDMI ports, one for A/V and one audio only) and a coax digital out, and that's it. If you plan to add this to a stereo HiFi setup for music playback you will need to purchase a separate digital audio converter. Build quality is also a mixed bag. It has a heavy, all metal chassis to minimize vibration, but the case is all plastic. When opening the drawer the entire front opens. If you have a tight cabinet it can be a problem. There is no display at all on the front. All there is to indicate it's on is a tiny power light. App support is sparse but the essentials like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are there, as is Spotify. If you're looking for a nice 4K player for a home-theater setting, this is a worthy contender. If you're looking for an audiophile multi-disc player keep in mind that you'll need to add the cost of a DAC, which pushes the price into the range of some strong competitors.

Fantastic picture and audio
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I say about this 4k UHD blu-ray player that hasn't already been said many times over?? The picture and sound quality alone make this an outstanding unit that pairs nicely with my new 4k Samsun TV. If I was going to say anything negative, it would be that the remote is a little lackluster, but I'm running through a Harmony Elite remote, so it will just sit in a drawer anyways.

Impressed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just bought the x800 and I'm impressed. Impressed with the quality, speed, weight(good heft) and of course the video quality. The remote is a little slippery(the newness probably, small and light weight (I thought it'd be a little more substantial), but it works fine. Once connected, it worked flawlessly with my Onkyo Receiver and 4k LG tv, this is due to hdmi recognition, so you don't need to have matching brands. Feels better quality than the Samsung weight wise. Obviously it's much better than a blu ray upscaling player, as that is what I used until now. The color, oh wow! An early forest scene in The Revenant, I could see the moss on the trees with the upscaler, but with the x800, I could see the actual shade of green with total clarity. Btw, check your local Best Buys, cause these are popping up in stock sporadically. They sell out quick too though, the store I bought it showed in stock yesterday and by the time I got there, I got lucky and bought the last one!

Very good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At fist There was a problem with a slight skip every once in a while during 4k movies, BD movies and BD music discs. I tried adjustments and they all failed. Then I bought a Audioquest Cinnamon cable and it has never happened again. Now the picture is the best 4K I've ever seen without any problems and SACD's sound even better than before. This unit is excellent when used with the right cables. Dolby Atmos is perfect. I have Atmos full range large speakers mounted on my ceiling because I don't like the reflected sound and it is much more encompassing this way. If you do have the skipping problem then try the Cinnamon HDMI cable. It is well worth it for this unit.

ATMOS & 7.1 SURROUND OUTPUT!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If a consumer wants to enjoy ATMOS DTS-X or even 7.1 digital surround? TV apps "do not" send those surround signals out to your AV surround sound Receiver. TV's only output 2.0, 640 kpbs, digital stereo, via the optical, coax or HDMI. It's a Fact. So, if you want to enjoy those surround formats you'll need a blu ray player with those apps like this Sony player. I've researched this through painful page after page only to find that it's true. So, to get 7.1 surround, ATMOS, DTS-X from the streaming apps like... VUDU NETFLIX SLINGTV etc.. you'll need a disc player or streaming box that supports them. One last but IMPORTANT piece of info.... "LG players & TV's no longer support the all important YouTube app that many of us enjoy.". Best Buy's selling this Sony unit for a basement price! It's a "True 4K Player" not an upscaler only. Watch out for those "4k" blue ray players that don't play the actual 4K discs & only upscale blue rays & DVDs. Hope this post helps customers to make an informed buy? ~ Merry Christmas !

This Is the One To Own
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As of early spring 2017, this is absolutely the 4K Blu-ray player to own. It combines a plethora of features, a near endless list of supported formats (with one major inclusion...) and great performance to provide one of the best values in 4k players available. I tried a number of disc formats and it handled everything without issue on both a 4k HDR set and a 1080p plasma TV. The hardware on tap here is more than sufficient: load times are quick and I've not experienced any lag that seems all too prevalent in disc media players of this sort. There's not much negative to say about it except to mention the one obvious format omission: as of this writing, the player does not support Dolby Vision HDR. This is an odd choice, as the player comes equipped with the necessary hardware and would only need a software update to open it up. Once they (hopefully) do, it'll provide the best of both worlds in the currently semi-fragmented HDR format space. Overall, if you're looking for a great player at a reasonable price, this is it. No need to spend more or look any further.

Outstanding 4K Player!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an awesome 4K Ultra Blu-ray Player. Great picture quality and this player does boot up very fast. The load time is awesome!! I was skeptical about how much better this player would be over the Xbox One S but I can definitely tell the difference in picture quality. I have rewatched Planet Earth II, Lucy, and John Wick and could definitely see more detail and colors on the Sony player versus the Xbox One S. HDR is more defined and give that extra pop! Definitely worth the money. If you are thinking about making the move and have the Xbox, you should make the move and step up to the next level. Yo won't be disappointed. As far as the lack of apps, for me it is not an issue. My Samsung KS8000 has all the apps I need to play steaming content that isn't currently supported on the player. Will also say the audio quality is outstanding as well.

The one to buy, for now
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Sony player produces the best 4k HDR picture out there. Better than the Panasonic and at least equal to the Oppo. Unless you are looking to listen to SACD in 2 channel sound or tweak every individual picture setting save the $ and pick this player up.

Beware
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Was on sale ordered on line very easy, and fast service from BestBuy. I picked it up and hooked up. Easy to setup. Was up and running in about 5 minutes. Picture and sound was excellent. Played a movie was about half way thru movie a new BluRay disc by the way, I put it in pause, hit play to resume and the dvd player froze up, I find I had no control manual or with remote control. I had to unplug it from the outlet and plug it in to regain control. Now remote and manual buttons worked. It froze up twice with in 4 hours of use. I did not purchase a service contract so I returned it, Only 15 day return. BestBuy took it back no problems. Read on line this is a common fault of this sony dvd player. So buyer beware. Took home the LG UP 970 been fine no freeze ups. Thanks BestBuy.

Great 4k / Blu-ray player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Using this player with Sony XBR65x900E TV... exceptional picture, the difference between the 4k and Blu-ray very close visually. Was able to view on a xbox s (4k/Blu-ray) also... Picture on Sony UBP 800 noticeable better, with the same tv.....(bought a movie with a 4k and Blu-ray disc) to make the comparisons above...

Solid and Great Picture!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited when I received the delivery from Best Buy for this new 4K Blu-ray player. I was surprised the packaging was heavy and it turns out the player is built solid with high quality components. Upon booting, the loading of the movies were fast and swift and the picture quality was amazing. I was a bit concerned with how well the upscaling of the 1080 movies would come out. But it turns out it does a very good job with "guessing" the pixels and the pictures were sharp and great to watch. This beast certainly didn't disappoint. The bluetooth is a nice addition as I like to watch movies alone at times and the sound not choppy and able to carry a good distance. If you are looking for a high-end and high performance 4k player, this would be a great investment.

Excellent 4K player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player has given me the picture quality I expect with my 4k tv. Even though my 4k television is non-HDRAll of the UHD discs I had look incredible. Sonys HDR->SDR conversion on my X800B television gives movies a noticeable improvement. regular blu-rays look good, and even DVDs are tolerable. This thing has a surprising amount of heft to it. It's quiet, and feels like it is built to last. Id be surprised if another player worked better than this one.

Great video, but lacking in extras
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I will be the first to say that the video on this DVD player is AWESOME. It is crisp, clear, and loads very fast. If your main concern is that then this is def. for you. BUT I am one who likes convenience and extras. As such, I think its important to note that this DVD player does not allow you to download apps... which to me is an issue since we are an app operated world. That means no HBOGo, Showtime Anytime, Fox Now, or any other app not already included in their menu. The menu is pretty limited, but does provide the most common apps like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Vudu, and several music streaming options, but I think it is def. lacking by not allowing you to download additional apps. Also, The plastic casing of the dvd player is pretty basic and its not a very aesthetically pleasing player. For the $300 price tag I dont know that I love it.
