The Sony X800 is a good balance between cost and performance. I did try 2 competing brands and this Sony does what I bought it for the best, play Disc!!! I can't believe people review the menu structure and streaming services. I wanted a reliable DVD, Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray player, this one has been just that. DVD playback can be eliminated of noise almost completey and look quite good. Blu-ray and 4k look great at default settings. One complaint, no codes provided for TCL TV control or even Sony AVR for the remote. I was not concerned about the lack of Dolby Vision because my TV lacks that capability.

Sony Hit A Homerun With The UDP X800

This player is amazing. We have owned our LG OLED 65" EF9500 since late 2015 when it came out. We are using a very high end Marantz 9 channel receiver. We have been living with streaming movies (most not in 4K as the selection and ability to stream 4K only just recently became more widely available). We never purchased a 4K Blueray player as the reviews on the first one to the market, the Samsung, were not good. Then Phillips came out with the square model (looks like a toy...again, we waited). Meanwhile, while waiting, there is SO much more content available now to stream in 4K that we almost didn't even need a Blueray player. Now, Sony comes out with this model X800 and the build quality is stellar. Very solidly built, fast load and playback times, great features and a nice, sleek and clean look to it (very simple). We played back La La Land last night in 4K and all I can say is WOW. Better than streaming 4K, colors were amazing, picture was bright, sound was amazing...again, WOW. Now, we did have the ISF tuning performed on our OLED when we got it and I think it's an important thing not to skip. Our whites are WHITE and not BLUEISH. Getting back to this player...there are now many more players coming to the market and some might get better reviews (I can't imagine any with a better picture than what we witnessed). There have been some complaints that this doesn't have a display on the front of the player. No problem for us as it has the on screen display showing all you could ever want to see. Besides, who gets up during a movie to look at the display, it's much easier to hit "info" on the remote and see it on the large screen. Some have complained there is no Dolby Vision support. I think that maybe Sony could possibly have this on the X800 with a future update but not sure. However, for us it doesn't matter as our LG only supports HDR-10 anyway. This whole thing of DV vs HDR-10 format reminds me of years ago when VHS was head to head battling with Sony's Betamax format. HDR seems to be the more popular format (maybe because it came out first, not sure). If you are looking for a fantastic player to view your 4K content or just to upscale your current Blueray library look no further than this model. I think if they charged $400 or $450 they would still be in such high demand. It's a bargain for what Sony gives you for $300. Now Samsung is on their second model 4K player, the 9500, which is priced at $399. Claims it's much improved (yet still $100 more than this Sony). Go with the Sony and I can't imagine you will be disappointed. The only negative I could throw out there about this (and it's really not a negative) is that the setup menu has a LOT of options and might be a little overwhelming. Make sure you read through them and fine tune this player to what you need it to do---then sit back and enjoy the show!

It's a Roll of the Dice

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

In one way, it hurts to give this a rating of only 3 stars. The unit seems mechanically solid (not a lightweight, cheap-feeling machine) and, when it works properly, it works marvelously -- great picture, great app performance, intuitive home menu. Finding what you need in the settings menus after initial setup can be a bit of a challenge at first (figuring out how to set the Gracenote downloads for CD playback took a bit of hunting...), but hardly anyone does that perfectly. My biggest gripe was with the 4K-UHD disc playback. The first two discs played back without issue. Every attempt since then has resulted in the playback freezing and/or skipping at different points. (One of these was the same disc that played perfectly on the first attempt, still looking brand new and clean as clean can be.) It will play standard Blu-ray discs without a hitch, and they look great. This will "upscale" HD and lesser material to 4K (as will many/most 4K TV's). Btw, with that in mind, for older movies not CREATED in 4K, don't expect any improvement in picture quality from a UHD Blu-ray disc. All they did before making the disc is what the player or TV will do, anyway: smooth out the lines. They don't add detail that was missing in a lower-resolution original content. Whether the upscaling was done in producing the discs or you let this player do it, you can expect a nice, clean picture. Last night, after following all the advice from Sony support on their website for these issues (check for firmware update, check cables, power cycle the player, try new cables (tried 3 different high-speed (including HDMI v2.0)... even after trying several system settings changes that other owners claimed to have worked for them... basically, everything short of magical incantations (only because I don't know any), I decided that I am going to return this. Almost in defiance (think "Christine"), when I turned the unit back on after restoring the original connection (i.e., the HDMI cable that actually worked for awhile), the Home screen started blinking off at random intervals. (See the attached video.) It would play a Blu-ray disc, though, and do it flawlessly (for over an hour as I finished watching a movie that it wouldn't play on the 4K-UHD disc). I tried the player again this morning, and it still behaved as is did last night: flickering home screen, 4K-UHD locks up and skips, standard Blu-ray plays just fine. I have boxed this up and will be returning it to Best Buy shortly. Sadly, it seems these problems come with MANY 4K-UHD players -- not just this Sony. The only units I have found with much more reliable performance are also much more expensive -- two, three, or more times the cost of this unit. An awful lot of people seem happy with this unit (which is why I bought it in the first place), so I am going to give the model a second chance. Hopefully the next one will be more reliable than this one. Just in case, I may opt for the extended warranty, which is something I almost never do. Having been to the Sony Community discussion boards (and other review websites), I can tell you that quite a few people have experienced these same lockup/skipping issues. So, I would not flatly recommend this player -- but if one is willing to take a chance that he will not get a lemon, it just might pay off. Without the defects, this would be a very nice player.

Excellent 4K player for disc only

These palaver far exceeds my expectations when playing a 4K disc. The picture and sound quality is amazing. I bought this player 2 months ago because it has 4K apps like (Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. I like to watch Netflix, so I pay for the 4K Netflix subscription. Now I know that not all content on Netflix is on 4K with Dolby Atmos audio enabled. This players Netflix app only enables 4K picture without enabling Dolby Atmos audio. What a disappointment? Even my Xbox One can enable 4K picture and Dolby Atmos on my Netflix app. I would only use this player for 4K discs and not for apps. Sony needs to update there apps.

    Great audio disc transport

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My primary reason for purchasing this was to compare the quality of my multichannel SACDs. I have a Marantz UD5007 that had performed beautifully, but because it's several years old, and due to the fact that Sony created the SACD standard, I thought I'd try this when it went on sale. For SACD playback the Sony is the clear winner. For one, it outputs SACD PCM at 176.4K, which is double the Marantz 88.2 (my AVR does not process DSD from SACD natively; most don't nowadays). I don't know if it's the higher rate or just better decoding chip (SACD is both hardware and software dependent, which is why it's nearly impossible to rip), but the additional detail from the Sony is nothing less than remarkable. I haven't done any close testing with BD audio and DVD audio discs yet, but my first impressions were not as dramatic--probably since both players are bitstreaming to the AVR for processing. However I do have duplicates of one BD audio disc, so I should be able to do some very quick a/b testing between the two players. All I can say is that with SACD discs the difference was dramatic to me, since I could immediately hear details I never heard before, then when playing the same disc in the Marantz they disappeared again even when I played it louder. I rarely listen to regular CDs, but the Marantz has analog outs whereas the Sony doesn't, so my comparisons there weren't really meaningful.... The Sony has an upsampling feature that supposedly works well but again I haven't really explored it. Overall I would recommend this highly as an audio disc transport, especially for people with a large SACD collection. All the streaming and video features work really well, load quickly and and look great to me.

Wondering why it took Sony longer to release a player? Well I think its because they wanted to do it right. Glad I waited. Player feels premium and performance to match. I know there is a 1000ES but I don't have a rack system or need the features that player has. X800 is plenty for my needs. So far out of the box everything works, yes there is not much app streaming support yet but I didn't buy this player to stream content. I am sure this will be updated as software updates come out. This player plays every content I have in my collection including Hi res tracks. No fear buy now you wont regret it.

An excellent UHD BD player for the price. Better picture quality than the Samsung K8500 has. Sony hit a home run with the player. Unlike some other newer models, I've yet to run into any playback issues with UHD BDs, 2D BDs, 3D BDs, SACDs, or DVD-A discs. They have all played without issue.

    Defective Out Of The Box

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased a Sony UBP-X800 4k Blu-Ray player shortly after purchasing a 65" 900E series Sony TV. Hooking it up and mapping it to my WiFi connection was easy, and it completed a firmware update without incident. Initial impression upon playing a brand new 4k disc ("Starship Troopers") was that it provided a fine picture . . . until it started skipping. The picture would randomly go black, and restart a little later in the movie. Back up to before the glitch happened, and the disc would play normally . . . until it skipped a little later at a DIFFERENT part of the movie. Trying numerous other discs (both Blu-Ray and DVD) showed the same behavior, so I took the player back to Best Buy and exchanged it for another Sony UBP-X800. Right off the bat, the second player showed flickering lines in the image when only the player's apps were being displayed - I call it video static. I then tried various discs getting random blackouts and skips, which did NOT repeat in the same place on a given disc. The standard DVD player the new UBP-X800 was to replace still worked fine, but just to double check the rest of my system I swapped in a different Sony Blu-Ray player (Model BDP-S1000ES) using the same cables and connections as with the UBP-X800 - perfect function, no problems. So both UBP-X800 players were defective out of the box. Returned UBP-X800 #2 to Best Buy for a refund. No problem at Best Buy with either the first exchange or the return of the second unit. Very, VERY disappointed with Sony for selling defective products like this.

I finally decided to upgrade from my old Sony DVD/CD player. I have a large collection of SACD and DVD-Audio discs and was looking for a universal player. After hooking it up I knew I had made the right choice. My music has never sounded so good. Then I popped a bluray and the picture quality was also excellent. I am very happy with this player and would highly recommend it.

Good UHD player but with some annoyances

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I use this player with an LG 65E7P OLED TV with a Sky 4k HDMI cable. I've had this setup for about 6 months. The video output quality is fantastic whether sourcing from a DVD/Blu Ray or online services. Simply put, it lives up to expectations when it works. The issues that drop my rating are: 1) it locks up at least once a week and I have to unplug it to get it to reset. Most players let you hold the power button down for a hard reset, this one doesn't have that feature. 2) you have to be on the home screen to eject/load a disc, i.e. you can't be watching Netflix and eject a disk (bad design decision). 3) you can't add your own online apps to the built in ones. 4) the Options, whether from the home screen or during movie play are clunky and unclear, e.g. in trying to display a Test Screen for a resolution, the screen comes up black with some text, but you don't know if it is an actual test screen or not. 5) the Power sync between the TV and player has a bug, if I power off the player, the TV power stays on, I then turn off the TV, 4-5 minutes later, the player turns itself and the TV back on, odd! (if I turn off the TV first, then everything stays off). So in short, the player produces excellent video, but has some rather annoying quirks that keep it from being rated with highest marks. Some improvements and more time spent on design decisions, user interface and software quality and I would have recommended this player.

This 4K Blu-Ray player comes highly recommended from me. It's so fun to boot up and play 3D movies on my 3D TV, 4K discs, and even plain old DVDs. The menu interface isn't beautiful but it doesn't need to be. It comes with a cute little remote, but not the HDMI cable you'll need to hook it up, but that separately. Definitely worth the quality for the price!

Player is built pretty well, somewhat mini universal due to its abundance of formats. Menu is easy to utilize, sound quality was quite better than video but not by far. That's me coming from their BDPS7200 with basically the same remote. Sony could've made this player more premium, $200 minimum for its entry level player. X-700 vs This X-800

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Sony X-700 is a superior player than this X-800...Why? A: The X-700 has all the Hi-Res sound. B: The X-700 has Dolby Vision chip C: The X-700 is $100 cheaper Why would I choose this X-800 and spend $100 more, when I can buy the step down unit X-700 and spend $100 less? Answer: I wouldn't! This is why I like Best Buy. Best Buy offers a window shopping ability to sort out the inferior from the superior. Only at Best Buy will we find these price slashed deals that deliver the best bang for the buck. Their online window shopping allows us to avoid making costly mistakes. Saving us big money & time on return shipping & refunds. Now, the X-800 is an excellent unit, but, Dolby Vision is a must in a 4K player as the broadcasting to come in the near future will likely be aired in Dolby Vision. Anyone who's experienced DV on a 4K TV knows that it's unmatched in it's picture quality. That simple. So, these 3 things are a must in a 4K player especially if you're a projector owner etc.. 1. Dolby Vision 2. HDR 3 3D capable Notice I included 3D? That's because 3D experienced over a 100" screen is so immersive it will literally leave you asking.. "Why would anyone not like 3D?" Imagine seeing the Alien creature in your living room at life size in 3D, it's a wonder to behold! This player mated with any 3D projector (most $499 projectors deliver excellent 3D) will deliver a 3D experience that will amaze you and the family! Guarantee it! Anyone, Any-body, who's not blown away by a 100" 3D picture in their home, is numb to fun and excitement. And, fun and excitement is what we seek from our Home Theater experience in the livingroom. ~ peace

I bought the X800 based on the suggestion of the staff at Best Buy. I wanted a quality UHD player that can also accept content on a USB stick and play it. The X800 does do that and I even connected it to my home network and stream from my computer. The picture quality is excellent. However this player crashes once a day when in use. When it crashes, it restarts and I have to log back into my Wifi network, add my apps again, basically start over. I spoke to Sony who even mailed me the latest firmware, but the player already had it installed. I'll follow up with Sony again next week but in the meantime I cancelled my order for an 85" Sony 850 series 85" TV, thinking I may go for the 86" LG or possibly the smaller 82" Samsung since a 65" Samsung I have works rather well.

Awesome player, fast load times, plays all media

I recently upgraded to a 4K setup in November. I have an older receiver, not that old, but old enough to not support HDR. I decided I wanted a blu-ray player with dual outputs so I didn't have to update my receiver right now. I have a Marantz SR6007. The dual outputs work flawlessly, I enjoy HDR 4K movies with DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD surround sound since it downconverts from Atmos or DTS:X for now until I get a new receiver. One of my favorite movies is La La Land. On my old blu-ray player, this disc was particularly slow loading. This Sony X800 loads the 4K version up within 5 seconds. It upscales all content to 2160p as long as under the settings menu, you set the Upscaling to "2". I also like ripping my DVDs to my MyCloud network drive to watch TV episodes over the network. This is a wonderful media player for that reason and also upscales that content! The only gripe I have is that my TV supports Dolby Vision and they have not yet released a patch that allows the X800 to support DV. I will still give it 5 stars because the 4K picture is awesome as is and I hope they release this patch in the future.

We purchased this player to pair up with our LG Oled 65" and the results are visually amazing. In truth this player is not a major upgrade from a traditional bluray player but it is noticeable difference plus it has a great upscaler for Blurays and dvd's. No Dolby Vision is not a deal breaker.
