Sony UBP-X800 has outstanding picture quality

The Sony UBP-X800 has picture quality that really equals or surpasses both the Oppo and the Panasonic UHD Blu-ray players. The Sony is a very solidly built player for less money than the previously mentioned Blu-ray players. The only negative of the Sony is if you have Region Free Blu-ray Discs from Europe it will not play all of them while both the Oppo and the Panasonic play them fine.

    Great product for the price

Liked what this player can do especially for the price. Probably not as good as OPPO but not nearly as expensive. Set up is easy and menus very simple to move through. Power set up is poor. Most electronics allow you to unplug from the back . This one requires you to unplug from the wall. That is a real pain if you have to get behind an entertainment center. Make sure you set up audio to Auto 2 if you are running your audio to a receiver and video directly to the TV. If your receiver is not on yet audio can be sent out HDMI ! and not to your receiver. Also mask sure BD secondary audio is off if you want audio as the disk allows. I am now on my replacement player from Sony and the is why I have lowered my rating. Had problems with the disc format not being recognized. Then the audio not going to my receiver. Finally the disc tray not opening. Sony replaced the unit but their process takes way to long to get a replacement unit out. They had my old unit on a Friday and did not ship the new unit out until the following Thursday

Purchased this to replace my Samsung 8500 and to pair with my X940D Sony. I am totally happy with this unit. The worst part for me with the Samsung was that terrible remote that came with the 8500. Couldn't ask for much more for $300.00. Just wish they had a better selection for the 2 free movies.

Everything is great, except this player doesn’t support Dolby Vision. Sony will be realeasing the UBP-X800M2 that will bring Dolby Vision to this player. If you don’t have a TV that supports it, than this is the player for you. If you have a TV with Dolby Vision, and you can’t wait, buy the UBP-X700.

I've had this player for about a year now. The image quality is great, but is tends to freeze every so often when playing a 4k disc. No commands will work I can't eject or power it off by pressing the buttons on the remote or the player. The only way to get it back is to unplug it. It has updated firmware 3 times since i have had it and this issue does not go away. Its annoying when this happens because this player does not have a detachable power cord. If you need to unplug it you need to do it from the outlet and that sucks if its behind your entertainment center and hard to reach like it is for me.

Excellent player missing one crucial feature

    Posted .

This thing is built very well and has all the features you could want except one.. and its a BIG feature. Being a 4K UHD blu-ray player, this player SHOULD have both major HDR standards... HDR10 and Dolby Vision. This is the best "reasonably priced" 4K player on the market but yet the Oppo and LG models support Dolby Vision. With 2017 Sony TVs including DV support, there is no excuse for this model not to support it. Especially with OLEDs, the limited nits may result in Dolby Vision being the best HDR format for these TVs. Who wants to buy a player that can be obsolete in a year or two... Sony needs to announce that DV support will be added via firmware and this will be the perfect 4K blu-ray player. Note that 4K UHD Blu-rays with Dolby Vision are coming in 2017 (and Sony is one of the studios releasing them! Unbelievable!) .

I have a Sony 4K Bravia 65" TV and tried several other 4K DVD players. This one is hands down the best. Out of the box, plug and play. Could not be easier.

    Very Dissapointing

I was very excited to hear Sony will finally jump on a bandwagon and release a 4K UHD player. Every single Blu-ray player I owned was always Sony and loved them. Not a fan of Samsung UHD8500 but it works well with my Samsung KS8500 Curved TV. For upstairs room since I have a Sony 850C 4KTV I wanted to replace another UHD8500 with Sony to have a matching pair Got the player today after it shipped from Best Buy yesterday (Kudos Best Buy) and went to town testing it. Let's just say 8 hours later at 3AM this player is back in the original box and will be going back to Best Buy in the morning. Here are some quick details. PROS - Love the weight. Feels heavy, sturdy and overall feels rich. Makes the Samsung UHD players feel like plastic toys - Very quick setup and interface. Love sony UI design and this one doesn't disappoint. Very easy to use, great menu and very quick. much quicker menu then Samsung (Maybe because it's empty - we get to that in a minute) - Very quick load time for both 4K and Blu-Ray movies - handshake issues, mostly on Lionsgate movies like John Wick or Sicario. No worries, turned off Deep Color since it was never used in the industry and it worked fine. Same issue as Samsung - Presets for picture settings including 2 custom settings so that way it's an extension of your settings on TV. Good for those who watch movies during the day and night. You can preset your settings like brightness and other items and switch it on the fly. - Remote much better than Samsung UHD player - Unit much more quieter than Samsung UHD players. There are certain movies that play louder on Samsung UHD player, don't ask me why but Sicario and Deepwater Horizon are loud as heck. I couldn't hear the disc even rotate at 2am. Probably the fact the chassis and weight of the player doesn't vibrate like the plastic Samsung. - Blutooth for private headphone listening (Samsung 9500 will have as well) I liked this feature. CONS - No apps. Period. It really out of the box only comes with Netflix (Shocking). Vudu and Amazon Prime do not work and it states they will work later on when Sony releases an update. Currently there is no update. Netflix works, however it is inconsistent and TV doesn't switch to HDR for Ultra HDR shows like House of Cards. Once in a while it will, but most times it won't. - Blu-Ray upscale quality is poorer than Samsung. Blu-rays mastered in 4K looked just as good as Samsung, but blu-rays non-mastered in 4K do not look appealing at all. Samsung upscaled movies better. I compared this side by side tonight on several movies. Used Apollo 13 and Fifth Element Mastered for 4k Blu-Rays and they were even, but for older non-mastered blu-rays like The Rock or Armageddon, Samsung blew Sony away That's it. The pros outweigh the cons in the build department and user interface but this is 4K and I'm sorry but picture quality and content matters. This might be a great entry level $149-$199 player, but not $299. Looks like I'm going to have to use Samsung on my Sony TV for a little while longer. Here is hoping that UBP-X1000 that Sony plans on releasing is a lot better. -

This is my 3rd Sony DVD player. I have for the most part always purchased Sony TV's and DVD players. Never had any issue with the TVs but the DVD players are a different story. Every one I have owned locks up for no reason and you have to unplug and plug back in to get it to work. I have contacted Sony and they have no explanation or fix. When they work, they provide a great picture, but it is a pain when they freeze.

Great 4K video playback!! Stupendous 4K upcoversion for standard 1080p Blu ray discs. Together with the LG C7 (55”) Organic Light Emitting Diode (O.L.E.D) display it can’t be beat, except with an 8K display and feed! Set the LG C7 to strong HDR and standard 1080p Blu Ray discs look like new 4K disc for older titles, Especially for the best video quality Blu ray discs. However, for the newest releases and full restored older catalogue titles buy the 4K discs, they look fantastic in 4K video!

Only one I found with dual HDMI outputs

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I looked at a number of other 4K units. Sony was the ONLY one with dual HDMI outputs: a dedicated audio HDMI output to go directly into the receiver, and the main HDMI goes directly into the TV. If I want TV audio, I just play the content. If I want full surround sound, I just turn on the receiver and it automatically cuts the TV audio. And none of the complexity of routing the picture thru the receiver.

    Finicky

I first purchased this back in the beginning of April or pretty much when they were first in stock at Best Buy. The player is definitely well-built and it worked fine for a month or so. However, I noticed within the last couple of weeks the player at times have been unresponsive . When I a put a disk in the player refuses to play it (nothing happens) On occasion the disc tray would be stuck and even when I press the open /close button on the remote it still won't let the disk tray back into the player. I would have to manually shut it or I would have to unplug the unit and when it turns back on the player seems to work fine. Who knows what is going to happen with the player the longer I have it. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse. Aside from that when the unit does work properly the picture is great the colors are vivid the load times are relatively fast. At this point I don't think I would recommend the player to anyone. If the player worked properly at all times it's definitely a great player however It appears to be too finicky. Maybe I should have went with the more expensive Oppo.

    Disconnected

Build quality is good, but for a mid level player (not high end) it doesn't have nearly enough connection options (1 Coax and 1 HDMI). It should at least also have a toslink as my older pre-pro can't take the other two. The Samsung has all three and is a better choice. I have yet to view a 4k video with surround sound because of this

    Problematic while it worked

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Even before my UBP-X800 died (incidentally, just a couple weeks after the warranty expired) it was problematic. About 30% of the time it would shut off on its own right in the middle of playing a disc. For most discs this was a mere inconvenience, as turning the player back on and pressing Play would pick up where it had left off, but on many discs it would result in the movie starting over and having to manually navigate to where it had previously stopped. Very annoying. And from what I can tell in online forums, fairly common with this model. There are some other weird issues -- like inconsistent support for various file formats when playing files off of an attached USB drive, or having to change the default audio settings just to get it to output Dolby Atmos to a receiver. Weird. In any case, I wouldn't buy this player again, or recommend it to anyone. There are much better options now for considerably cheaper.

At the price point I got it at, I was hoping for Dolby Vision through firmware update. It is not going to get it so now I will have to buy another player. While not confirmed, they hinted that it would come through update so I'm disappointed. If you have a TV that supports dolby vision, I'd get an AVR and player that supports it and avoid the issues I had.
