    Poor Product

Purchased this player in June, and it just died today. Have been with tech support several times with flashing main menu over the past several months, reprogrammed it, picture quality was not always the best, cheap remote. I'm using this player with an LG OLED tv, so its not the tv for poor picture quality. I've had Sony in the past, I should have known, lesson learned. Now on to purchasing a new 4K player again. NO Sony!

Best 4K Player for the money

You are watching a 4K or Blu-Ray action movie with your 7.2 receiver to have someone in your home, say, "PLEASE TURN THE SOUND DOWN." Well. not with Sony UBP-x800 with its built in Bluetooth 4.1. You just sit there in your recliner with your pair of headphones and smile. How much is that worth?

I bought my 4K HD player almost a year ago, 30 Mar 2018. After 6 months when I tried to power it up, it would not. Unplug, wait a few minutes, power back up and Wa La! It worked fine. Now it will not power up at all. Green light is on in the power button, remote does not work (yes I tried new batteries), push the open button and it will. Placed a DVD in the tray and closed it. Nothing. Open back up to retrieve my movie. I just talked with Sony and they are going to replace the unit. We will see! I love Sony products and own 6 different items. I hope this is just a fluke as I prefer their brand over others. I fear their quality might be slipping. I hope not though!!! The features of the player are nice enough and when it works I am very happy with it overall. But it's gotta power up to enjoy the performance of the player!!!

    Dropouts, Skipping, Static

On Black Friday, I bought a Sony 65" 4K TV, a Denon 7.2 A/V, and this BD. I immediately saw periodic video dropouts (every 30 seconds or so) on DVDs (audio was fine), and audio dropouts on CDs. There were no problems just watching TV or listening to the radio. I bought $100 HDMI cables, swapped out the A/V for a Sony, and exchanged this BD for another X800. Same problems. I switched out this BD to a different 4K BD, and NO problems. So, it is isolated to this BD. I went to Sony tech support, who gave me a laundry list of things to try/test. No change... same problems. Sony's next step was to CALL FOR SERVICE! Ha; no way. I returned it and got a different BD. My conclusion: Do not, under any circumstances, buy this BD. Sorry.

Tried 2 Samsung 4K Blu-ray players that did not work at first then I exchanged the Samsung for this player and I love it! It's so much better and I haven't had any problems so far. This player will play 4K Blu-rays, Blu-rays and DVDs and has great apps.

    Worst DVD player ever!!

This thing is horrible. It has a problem where it locks up, won’t work and won’t shut off. You have to unplug it and start over. Read all the bad reviews, they all do the same thing, Sony knows about it and won’t do anything to fix it. And, it has no display on the unit, so you don’t know what it’s doing ever. $300 for a piece of junk? I’m usually all Sony but they really let people down with this. Run, don’t walk, away from this unit. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL!!!!

Fast forward to 2022, that's right 2 years ago this thing quit working, bought it back in 2018 so it only lasted 4 years. I have a Sony bluray player that nearly 2 decades old and it still working.

Found this player to deliver a nice high quality picture. Cons, no display, almost the whole length of the front opens to insert a disk. Unit has locked up a few times in the last two months and requires powering it down to gain any functionality. Also have problem when turned on that there is no output to the TV. Have to reset the disk that was already in there from the previous use. Should have just worked. Seems to have problems with older DVDs. This unit is being used with all new Sony components. Not the Sony I remember :(

    Great when it works

This player really needs 2 reviews, one for when it works, and one for when it locks up. Had player for 2 hours and it froze, completely. Must unplug and reboot. When it’s on, it’s fantastic. Unfortunately as I close in on the 1 year warranty end, it’s freezing almost every day now. Buyer beware, this issue is all over the forums and chat rooms. If it freezes at all, exchange it. If yours works, enjoy it!

Was a great player, but only for 4 years

Was a great Blu-Ray player for a long time, but the promised dolby vision update never came and instead Sony abandoned their customers and then told them we need to buy the Mark 2 of the same player. 4 years after purchase and many firmware updates later, my player now freezes in the middle of playback and refuses to eject my disc until I unplug it and back in again.

I bought this in late November 2017. When it works, the picture quality is amazing. However, I am getting error messages saying "Connection status can not be confirmed. Cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later." That is unacceptable. This was a waste of my hard earned money and I wish I would never have purchased this player. **My internet works fine as everything else works/connects with no issues. It is definitely this player.

Malfunctioning Unit - No Support from Sony

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Purchased the Sony UBP-X800 from Best Buy and for a couple of months it worked fine. Then our circuit breaker started tripping. We checked the load on the circuit and it was well below the 25 amp rating on the breaker. Then we noticed the area on top of the X800 above where the power cord is was swollen and the top of the had popped up about a quarter of an inch. It appeared as if something inside the unit had swelled until it pushed the top up. The unit was sitting on a shelf alone, with nothing on top or below to interfere with cooling. There was plenty of airflow around the unit. We sent the unit in to Sony and they came back saying that there was physical damage to the unit and they refused to fix it under the warranty. To reiterate - we bought the unit new in the original box from Best Buy, brought it home, unboxed it, connected it through HDMI to the receiver, plugged it in, turned it on, and proceeded to watch movies with it. At no point was it dropped or damaged by us. But Sony refused to honor their warranty. I personally will stay away from Sony Products after this.

4K picture looked great. However player had handshake issue with my receiver. No sound/ sound constantly cutting out. Paid geek squad to come out to resolve it. They couldn't fix it. Always loved Sony products. Disappointed with this player. Had to return and get a Panasonic ultra hd player. I can only give it two stars because of the picture quality. Buyer beware: handshake issue with receivers.

    4k DVD

I would like to start be saying I have always thought of SONY as a quality product and company but everything I have purchased in the past has always worked as described out the box. I went to best buy to purchase the item and none were on the shelf so one was mailed to me. Best Buy had it to me in 3 days that was great! When I finally got the opportunity to take it out of the box and set it up it seemed to work ok but said a software update was needed. This is were all the Joy stopped! I started the update and it gave me an error message. Tried a few more times with no luck so I finally broke down and called Sony support after 1.5 hours of wasted time with Sony support it was determined that it would not update, and I should send it back. Then a new one would be mailed out to me. After I mailed back the defective unit I should of known better and just returned it to best buy. Instead I mailed it back to Sony. I was told they would replace but now I get an email that it is a return only and when I try to call the support dept they tell me their system is down and to call back later. This has happened twice now. Buyer beware in my option SONY has not worked out all the bugs with this product yet but decided to push it to market because Samsung and Phillips both had 4k dvd players in the market.
