The product itself is fine. My only complaint is that I had to install/sync to my TV myself, instead of the Geek Squad doing it.

I purchased the BDP-S1700 in April. I had no problems with Blu-ray, DVD or CD playback...that is, until recently. One night last week, I decided to dig out my old "Spider-Man" DVD. It took three attempts and opening and closing the disc tray before I wouldn't see a "No Disc" screen. I'm pretty OCD about my disc library, so needless to say, there were no fingerprints, dust or scratches on it. After the disc finally booted up, things were going just fine until the screen went black following the FBI warning and there was a hesitation loading up the Columbia logo. I didn't get anything on screen until about the point the Col. logo segued into the Marvel one. The player had never hesitated before like this with any disc. As an experiment, I dug out some more older Sony DVDs ("A Few Good Men," "Panic Room," "Adaptation," "Black Hawk Down," "As Good As It Gets" and "Glory."). They all had the same delay issue ol' Spidey did. I have the video set at 24p on the player and I'm using a Dynex HDMI cable on an Insignia 32" 1080p TV. No discs from other distributors have had this issue. Oddly, more recent Sony Blu-rays and DVDs play without a hitch. I have the latest firmware update and I've tinkered with every setting known to man, but there's still a delay playing the beginning of older Sony DVDs. If anyone knows of a firmware update or has a solution outside of upgrading these discs to Blu-ray or 4K, please pass it on!

The player is quiet, does what it needs to without any fluff like extra menus and options. As a bonus it can play digital files on a portable hard drive in MP4 or mkv format.

Whoa, what a great picture. The clarity is overwhelming. I would buy one for each room with a TV.

This is a relatively cheap player, but it does the job. This is the way to go if want an inexpensive player. The humming of the player can be a little loud depending the disc you are playing. Solid player overall. Sony makes quality home media products in general.

also for our RV, needed something that uses close to zero electricity due to solar restriction. this is the one. i researched these for a few days to find that luckily best buy sells it. great little unit

Store associate was very helpful. Since it wasn't in stock he ordered it to be sent to my home, which I promptly received.

I haven't used it yet, so I can't really say at this moment. Received quickly, so kudos for that!

Plays DVD's and BluRays fine and will allow to stream via several included apps, however, from the beginning device was quite slow. Slowness has only become worse with time, frequently requiring a reboot. All updates have been performed. Also own the BDPS6500 and would highly recommend spending a little bit more for that device for a MUCH better experience.

This is a nice DVD player, but setup was a little frustrating since it does not come with either an hdmi or a digital coaxial cable, so you’d have to buy those separately. Maybe this was written in fine print somewhere but I didn’t see it. Strangely, the instruction manual was also for a different model entirely. However I do appreciate sales rep Nastazia (sp?) helping me resolve this issue.

It gives a sharper image to both regular and Blu-ray dvs!.

This was a gift and it was a hit! If I need a new one, will definitely buy this player. The picture is so clear!

Sony quality. Works as it should. No frills. Great for spare room movie viewing.

Bought this to replace my PS3 which became a de facto blu-ray player. It's easy enough to use, but it's pretty loud so I hide it behind a door on my shelf to try and muffle the sound. Maybe it's the dvds I use but I'm not really sure. If you have a smart TV, save yourself the money and get the regular one not the streaming one.
