The Sony UBP-X700 is a lightweight blue ray dvd player with a small foot print, but high performance at a value price. I installed this unit to a Sony 4k Bravia OLED screen. The ultra HD 4k play back is excellent . Theater quality picture with Dolby vision sound. Easy setup with easy to use remote. Unit runs very quietly. Steaming apps available to user. Front access covered usb port. 2 HDMI outputs one A/V & one audio only. LAN or wireless ready.

Great player for those who don't need the 800m2

I already owned the 800m2, the step up from this model, using it on a different TV in a different room. There are differences between the 2 but they're so slight the people who'd benefit from the 800m2 over the 700 could probably fit in 1 room. Both players handle 4k discs equally well, have Dolby Vision and Atmos and dts x. They're both obviously backwards compatible, handling blu-ray dvd and even CD and SACD. They're both capable of being wired or wireless. So the differences? I think it's just these: 1: Build - the 800m2 is sturdier, heavier, and would blend in better with a rack system if you're kicking it old school and have a rack system next to the tv. Is that you? 2: Bluetooth - the 700 has no BT capabilities. The 800m2 won't transmit - you won't be able to use bt headphones to hear the audio. But it'll receive a signal if you want to send music or audio to your player, But if you own either player, you own a 4k tv and that probably has bt or screen mirroring. If it doesn't, you probably have a streaming device that does. If you don't, you can buy one for less than the difference in price between the 700 or 800m2, assuming you have the extra input in your tv. So if you want to send music to your tv, can't use your tv or streaming device o do so and have no more inputs in your tv, the 800m2 will scratch that itch. That you? 3: Audio files. I don't know why the 800m2 is "certified hi-res audio" but the 700 is not. The both play almost all of the same audio files and formats. Maybe it has something to do with the build? But from what I can see, the only difference between the 2 units is that the 800m2 also handles "DVD Audio" a dead audio format that went head-to-head with Sony's SACD format for music mixed for a home theater format. And lost. I happen to have some DVD-Audio discs so when the 800m2 went on a deep sale, it was a no brainer. But unless you either have a library of DVD-Audio discs, OR plan on making that your new hobby, trolling auction sites and used cd stores for these increasingly hard to find discs, many of which have already been released on blu-ray audio and playable on all blu-ray players, you won't need the 800m2. That you? 4: Streaming. This is the one feature where the 700 wins over the 800m2. The 800m2 has 3 streaming apps - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Youtube. That's it. No way to add more to it. No access to an app store. The 700 isn't going to compete with a roku or fire stick, but it does have more, including Vudu and tubi as well as audio apps like pandora and Sirius xm. But again, if you need a 4k player, you have a 4k tv, likely it's a smart tv or you already have another streaming device. So if you need more streaming options on your player, you need the 700. That you? Hope that helps.

Physical media is still a thing and not everyone is into streaming and may have a preference for disc based media. As most modern Blu-ray players and media devices it isn't uncommon for them to be a "jack of all trades" where it does a little bit of everything and by that I mean it's primary purpose which is to play disc based media but thus Blu-ray player has streaming capabilities with support for current media consumption. In this review I'll be discussing the Sony 4K HDR Blu-ray player and all that it has to offer. ::Initial impressions:: My unboxing experience was pretty much what you would expect a fairly simple process. The Blu-ray player, a pair of batteries, remote control, and an 18gbps HDMI cable which is good at displaying 4K content at a maximum of 60Hz if my memory serves correct. It was a relief to see an included HDMI cable in the box but as far as I can remember Sony is typically generous with their devices and include what is necessary to enjoy their products. ::General thoughts:: Setup was a breeze and this device has a minimalistic UI (user interface) while it is tried and true I would love to see Sony try something new and use an updated UI perhaps they can adopt the one that's used on the PS5. The UI that Sony is using I believe is similar to that of the PS3. I guess "if it ain't broken don't fix it". I'd love to see Sony adopt Android TV OS, or even Google TV into their Blu-ray players much like they do on their televisions. I believe it is much needed and possibly may even improve sales because it would essentially become more like a high end media streaming device. The simplistic design is appreciated it isn't a total fingerprint magnet and that's awesome. And it doesn't feel sluggish which is great. You pop in a disc and the film or TV show starts up in seconds. HDR can be subjective but in what sense you may wonder? Well to best explain that your Television would be doing the processing so if you bought a TV with mediocre to non existent HDR implementation then you will not get the best results. The old saying goes you get what you pay for. My Television is pretty good and gets really bright. When your Television is properly calibrated and you watch Dolby vision content you can really enjoy content on your television whether it be a disc or via streaming. I tried out a few movies and watched some Netflix. I really enjoyed watching Batman VS Superman and I also watched the Snyder Cut of Justice League. I am impressed with the HDR capabilities it is what you would expect bright scenes that pop and dark scenes that set whatever mood that was intended by the director. ::Pros & Cons:: Pros - Fast - Excellent HDR support - Small form factor - included all necessary accessories - Trusted brand Cons: - Outdated UI - Needs more apps ::Closing thoughts:: Overall this 4K HDR Blu-ray player is a solid device and is near perfect. It is fast and has streaming capabilities which is plenty for most consumers. The thing that holds it back from being perfect are the lack of an app store that offers lots of the popular apps. The UI can be overlooked because that's minor in the grand scheme of things. ::TL;DR:: If you don't have a 4K Blu-ray player consider this one it is fast, solid, has HDR and will do all that you want it to do.

Very versatile, and easy product to use with great capabilities. Picture quality is amazing if you have the right TV. (I have the Sony X900F 65in with the Sony HTX9000F sound bar and subwoofer) It comes with am HDMI cord which is convenient also, very simply to hookup with only two cords.

The UBP-X700 I bought at Best Buy in December, 2019 went dark & silent in April, 2022 (2.3 years). The remote could power it on and off and open and close the tray as well as I could network ping it from my PC. So... the video/audio processor RIP. I didn't get Geek Squad and Sony's warranty is but one year. The Geeks at my local store suggested the repair would be 60-70% the cost of a new one considering a motherboard replacement and labor. I am considering this failure to be a fluke. In the meantime, I set up my old Sony BDP-BX18 Blu-ray which operated for almost eight years until the UBP-X700 took over. (The Sony SLV-D360P VHS/DVD player I bought in March of 2006 is still A-OK.) I kept an eye on the deals, daily and Sundays, and finally the UBP-X700 showed up with $80 off on June 12. Just in case, I threw in a 4-year Geek Squad plan. All that said, the UBP-X700 delivers stunning video to my TCL QLED TV. Once you've gone Dolby Vision, you won't go back; HDR is screamin' good, too. Can't expound on premium Dolby audio, but even though I don't use the coax output, my Onkyo's ancient Dolby Pro Logic II DSP creates a satisfying 5.1 surround experience with two KLH 15" 4-way speakers. I'm in agreement with reviewers that Sony does the best upscaling. Even my antique DVDs show superbly. VCD content on 700 MB CDs, as expected, not so much. The UBP-X700 has displayed and played every video and audio format I've thrown at it read from CDs to BD50-RE discs. Rare exceptions are for those I strayed too far from codec norms. The one and only zinger is it's primitive, featureless built-in media player. No thumbnails, file name ellipsis truncation. Two speeds for fast forward and rewind: really fast and really, really fast. No slow speeds or frame stepping. Though disappointed by the first UBP-X700 crash and burn, I didn't replace it with anything else. It's that good.

Great Player for 4K Blu-Rays and Blu-Rays. Great picture quality. Has Dolby Vision. Lightweight and compact. This player is quiet and has 2 connections for HDMI out, one for audio and one for audio and video. Also has a coaxial audio out. The picture quality is very sharp with 4k disks and is an upgrade over a PS5. Would recommend for any 4K setup, especially for Dolby Vision. *To use Dolby Vision there is a setting in Screen Settings to turn it on, or off. Not a huge problem, just has to be mentioned.

Bought this one because the last player I bought wasn’t 4K but simply a Blu-Ray player that was upscaling to near 4K picture. I’ve owned a 4K TV for several years now and had been told to get a 4K player as I was missing out on picture quality. After hooking this player up, that was easy since my system was already in place, I then proceeded to set up the streaming apps on the player. All were easy to do with the exception of Netflix which seemed to be a tech issue with the streaming service and not the player. I actually came back to that the next day and breezed through the set up. The picture is fantastic and I highly recommend anyone in the fence to go to Bestbuy and get this player. Great picture with an excellent price and those streaming services look awesome with their version of 4K playback.

Everything you need is in the box including the hdmi cable. I ran the update when it said that there was one available. I had no issues. Setup was easy, if your TV can't install certain apps like hbo max or Disney plus you can on this 4k player and play it from there . I mention this because my TV is an older 4k and those apps can't be installed on the TV itself. I had no buffering issues at all and everything worked flawlessly. Anything that has Dolby atmos and Dolby vision will be active in those modes. I have a few 4k movies on disc and no issues there. I can use the TV remote to pause and play the movie. The actual 4k player is small and lightweight compared to others that I saw .

This unit is EZ to setup and EZ to use. Glad they switched fromntue ultra tiny remote back to full size remote. We purchased this mainly to see Deadpool and Wolverine in its utmost glory. And also bought Top Gun Maverick in sale at same time. The UHD is amazing. However, I had read many professional reviewed online saying that you don't get the ultimate quality with streaming that you do with uncompressed UHD disc . This is only somewhat true. After watching the film in the theater, on D+ and on UHD. I have to say IMO, the quality of D+ was about 97.5% and the quality and UHD would be 100%. So you have to decide if a marginal increase in quality is worth the investment. From a different perspective, we wanted to OWN this priceless treasure of D&W on UHD for all time! haha

I purchased the Sony UBP-X700/M 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player as an open-item and admit I was worried about its condition, but Best Buy didn't disappoint. The product arrived exactly as described, and I am extremely happy with its performance. I've been using it for the past few months, and it has been working flawlessly. This player handles 4K discs beautifully and its streaming capabilities are seamless. I'm glad I took the chance on the open-box deal, as it provided excellent value without compromising on the quality and reliability I expect from a Sony player.

Great Compact, Budget Friendly 4K DVD Player

So it's 2021 and you're wondering, why should I even think about getting a DVD player? My kids only know about DVDs because of the discs I put in my PS5 or Xbox Series X. Well, if you're like me and care about having the ultimate picture and audio quality (and making your 4k TV really bring out its capabilities) when watching movies, a 4k DVD player is the answer. Coming in as a contender, the X700 is a great budget and compact 4k DVD player. A little larger than the size of a piece of 8.5" x 11" printer paper, it comes in a hard plastic housing with the front having a lint attractive glossy look. On the back it has 2 HDMI ports (has the option to separate video from sound if you prefer to), an ethernet port, a coax port, ethernet port, and power port. On the front it also includes a USB port where you can connect an external hard drive or flash drive to watch out listen to video or audio content. The X700 comes with everything you need to get started watching movies and shows. Plug in the power cord and the 18Gbs HDMI it comes with (allows for a full 4k UHD 60fps/Hz signal) and you're ready to go. The X700 supports 4k UHD (upscale to 4k 60p as well), HDR10, and Dolby Vision for video and Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Dolby True HD for audio features. It also comes equipped with popular streaming apps Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Vudu, Prime Video to name a few. After connecting to your Wi-Fi with the X700s built in Wi-Fi, you could then start using the streaming apps. Additionally, you also the capability to cast your mobile device screen or laptop through Miracast via the X700 (if they support it). The quality of watching movies with the X700 is stunning and amazing. Compared to watching 4K HDR movies from streaming services, through the X700 video and audio shows to be clearer, colors are more vivid, and there are also darker blacks. This is due to the DVD player having the bandwidth to display all of the data from a 4k UHD disc while streamed movies only use about a fifth of the data, give or take. Another great thing about the X700 is the ability to play older DVDs, Blu-Ray DVDs, and CDs on it. Although the X700 has many great features, there are a few downsides to it. The biggest downside for me is that it does not come with other popular streaming apps like Disney+, Paramount, Noggin, and others (and has not released an update to include them). While most 4k TVs are also smart TVs and have these apps, it would've been nice to have the option to use them from the DVD player as well. Another downside is that it doesn't include the latest HDR10+ technology (essentially a brighter display) as well (although there isn't much content out that is using it). Being at a great price point and offering many features, the Sony X700 is a great buy for those looking to get the most out of their 4k TVs picture quality and wanting to get into 4k DVD watching. Because it comes in a smaller form factor and supports HDR and Dolby Vision technology, it makes it an even better buy.

Sony has quality products and this unit is an excellent choice. It's space saving demotions and excellent picture and sound reproduction are my favorite attributes. Playing 4k movies is what I purchased this player for and I'm very satisfied. Yeah streaming is convenient and I have several plans at my disposal. Nothing beats the picture and sound quality of a physical Blu-ray 4K disc.

I got this size SONY player because it fit perfectly on my shelf space, versus the larger one which is supposed to be one level up. This smaller one also had better reviews for some reason. The player itself feels a little cheaper, just being plastic. And the interface seems old-fashioned and cheap, too. But hey, it plays videos amazingly with 0 problems! I like that it has Dolby Vision but I still have the option to turn it off (it's usually too dark for my liking). And I can also down-mix and sound into stereo if I want to. In short, it does what it needs to do well without adding anything too fancy to the rest of it.

This player had great reviews when i purchased it 8 months ago. Great price, and Dolby Vision, and solid 4-5 star reviews all sounded great! Then suddenly, while watching a 4k disc, the movie froze. I couldnt get it to unfreeze or do anything else. I had to unplug the unit, then plug it back in. Afterwards,it worked great for two weeks then froze again. Sometimes, pressing “skip-ahead”or “fast forward” also can cause it to skip. The last straw was trying to watch a new disc and when i pressed the button to skip,it froze and sent me to main menu-multiple times. Just upgraded to the X-800M2. Great rating on it,but we’ll see…
