4K Ultra HD Beauty!

I purchased this to view my 4K Blu-ray of 1959's "Ben Hur." The picture is sharp, the colors more vibrant, and the movement smooth and natural. The audio is also exceptional and clear. I love that when there is silence, it is true silence. That is most likely due to the excellent mastering of the disc, but the player doesn't get in the way of that either. The player is also backwards compatible with regular Blu-rays, DVDs, and CDs, upconverting the video discs a bit beyond what's available on a regular Blu-ray or DVD player. The remote control is your typical Sony remote control with lots of choices, including opening and closing the tray via remote. I am happy with my purchase.

Excellent player, needs Ethernet connection

One point must be clarified, though. It does require an Ethernet connection for Internet access. In our case, it replaces a player which was also connected this way. But it does mean you need convenient access to your indoor router. The Internet connection is needed for updates to player software and updates to digital rights management.

Xbox no longer plays my old DVDs and getting tired of having to deal with dozens of streaming apps just to watch a movie. This player handles all my old DVDs with no problems. Picture looks great. Have a few 4k Blu-ray videos and this player handles them with no issues.

Have watched two 4K bluray movies so far, True Lies and The King's Man. Kings Man looked and sounded great all the way through, but when I ejected the disk the machine froze, had to unplug it to get it back! True Lies looked mostly great but parts of it were way visually underwhelming, I suspect James Cameron was too busy saving the planet to put in the effort on the 4K conversion, not the fault of the player! The regular bluray version of The Hobbit also looked and sounded great! I am having a hard time finding any support (firmware etc.) from Sony on this particular model of the X700 series though, must be a new version. All in all, a good machine without spending too much money!

And you are likely right about True Lies; sometimes those older 4K conversions can be hit-or-miss, which is definitely not the fault of the player!
Regarding your issues:
The Freeze: The player locking up after ejecting The King's Man and requiring a power cycle is definitely not normal. This is usually a symptom of a temporary software hiccup.
Support/Firmware: You are spot-on that the UBP-X700 is a newer variant. However, it belongs to the widely supported UBP-X700 series. All firmware and support are handled under the UBP-X700 product page.
A firmware update often fixes those random lockups and stability issues (like freezing after eject). Please use the links for the UBP-X700 to ensure you have the latest software:

We strongly recommend updating via the internet if your player is connected, as it is the easiest method.

If you have a 4K TV & a sound system to match, then you too can enjoy the use of this Sony player. When playing a 4K movie, the sound is simply impressive to hear with a 7.1 surround sound system. Visually speaking, the player does upscale old movies to 4K quality & that's nice. Regular 4K movies are also nice to watch. A word of note. You may need 2 HDMI cables to take full advantage of the home theater experience. Why 2? One to be used between the player & your 4K TV. The 2nd to be used from the player to your receiver for sound. Keep in mind that not all receivers can handle 4K & may not transfer the full video quality. How would you know? The player will tell you through the setup process. A 2nd way to tell, play a movie & hit info on your TV remote. Your TV will show you what resolution it's displaying. Other than that, we've been playing movies for about a month with no problems. Keep in mind that not all HDMI cables are the same. Please pick cables that can handle 4K or better. The brand makes no difference. It's your choice. Enjoy!

Apparently like all DVD players, if a disc is assorted wrong, there's no way to get it out without ruining the thing. That's not Best Buy's fault. It's probably a deliberate a design to force us to buy more of these contraptions.
