    Good sound, bad durability, worse customer support

    I purchased these after cross shopping them with the Bose QC45 and chose this because I felt the sound quality was just a little bit better and the extra features with the touch pad interested me. My primary use case for these was for cross country flights, and they did well at this task. That is until about 2 months after buying these when the swivel hinge on the left ear cup fell apart while I was taking the headphones off. I have always stored these in their case and have never dropped or abused them, so to see them break like this was a surprise. I figured there must be a defect in the hinge. I contacted customer support from Sony and was promptly told the warranty does not cover any physical damage whatsoever. I know it sounds like it would just me taking my word on this being a defect but a quick google search for "Sony Headphones Swivel Hinge" will reveal this is a common issue on all of their headphones, and the fact they both have not fixed a bad design and also refuse to stand behind their product is telling. So if you want great sounding headphones that need to be replaced or repaired every 2 months, this is a great choice. I personally will just get the Bose QC45 and not look back.

    ANC has weakened over time!

    Bass is not what many high profile reviewers claim! Its okay for over ear headphones but its not shaking, thumping or anything over the top. The worst part though is after a handful of months with these the noise cancelling has weakened. Before it was good and blocked the sound of my 2 fans in the background which are quite noisy but now it sounds like ANC is reduced to 50% or the mic is enabled like the ambient mode, I can hear a lot more than usual on quiet. I noticed this tonight! Nothing changed except an update to the headphones. I tried resetting them completely and pairing with my phone. Adaptive sound is disabled. Not sure what happened or if the recent update screwed something up but very dissatisfied that I can hear my fans with my music now. No cracks, foam padding is still great looking, literally from 1 day to the next. I should have kept ignoring the update.

Lastly regarding the Noise Cancellation effects we advise that you put on the headset to a comfortable position, covering your ears completely for a more effective noise cancellation experience.     Just okay, a bit uncomfortable, subpar app

    I'm not a big fan of these headphones. I've owned other higher end (meaning more expensive) Sony noise cancelling headphones and these just can't compare to those, even taking into account the lower price point. First, somehow these feel uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time. I'm not sure why, but I definitely start suffering from ear fatigue much sooner than I have with other headphones. Next, the sound. The selling point for these is the extra bass you can apply, either through the equalizer within the app and / or via a dedicated 'ULT' button on the left side. Problem is that my ears couldn't tell much difference when toggling the ULT button on and off repeatedly. Maybe I'm just not as in tune to lower frequencies, I'm not sure. But, I thought the bass would be much more prominent. Lastly, the app. So I know that the app is not necessary to use the headphones - you just pair them with your device and get listening. But, Sony touts the app as unlocking so many great features that you are almost forced to use it, at least once. Unfortunately, the app is a hot mess - the GUI is pretty ugly, the navigation is slow and generally confusing. Considering Sony has been using an app for many years to truly achieve the potential of whatever headphones you have, you would think they would have put much more effort into it to make it beautiful, user friendly and truly functional. Regardless, there are reasons other than the app that I outlined above that should give you pause about buying these. Last but not least, the headphones came with a code to use on Amazon Music Unlimited to get 4 free months of the paid streaming service. Unfortunately, the code didn't work.

      When CLEAR BASS is set to high, it may be difficult to obtain the effect of ULT2. Here are the functions of the ULT button:

      ULT1: This setting emphasizes the deep bass range over other sounds.
      ULT2: This setting emphasizes powerful sound more than ULT1.
      OFF: Turns off the ULT button setting.

      We also understand your concern about the Sony app. Using the app is optional. However, it is recommended to fully utilize the capabilities of the headphones.

When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer’s actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions. To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.

    Don’t waste your money!!

    Les than 4 months after purchase the ear arm on now both sides broke. Best Buy has a 15 day exchange policy. Sony gave me the address I could pay to send them to for an estimate to repair and I pay shipping both ways. A third party who likely would replace them w similar arms and they would break again evey 4 months. Sony needs a class action suit brought by buyers of this faulty product. OR SONY COULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE A RECALL FOR REFUNDS OR AN IMPROVMENT IN THE DESIGN AT NO CHARGE!
