Good sound with some flaws.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony ULT WEAR noice cancelling headphones offer some very big sound with some setbacks. For starters, the sound is pretty darn good. I prefer the “Bright” setting with the ULT setting at 1. That’s the sound signature I enjoy, though there are several to choose from within the headphones app including a custom profile for fine tuning. Overall, the apps work pretty good although I do have a criticism I’ll touch on later. The headphones are light weight and provide decent comfort for long listening sessions. Additionally, the battery life is excellent. Get about 30hrs playback time and charging for just a few minutes will get a few more hours of playback. Awesome feature! Couple downsides I’m seeing with these headphones are build quality and overall aesthetics. They are mainly plastic and feel cheap. They also do not look premium. The ear cups I find are also fairly cheap. They are some kind of synthetic material and you get a nice greasy sheen on them once taking them off. You can instantly see all your head and ear oils on them and it’s a setback in my book. A different ear cup material would have gone a long way here. Another thing Sony needs to work on is the amount of prompts while trying to setup the headphones with their app. I got well over 10 prompts about various things. When I get a set of headphones I want to just listen. I’ll download an app, update firmware and that’s all I want to do. Overall, a nice sounding headset with long battery life, deep bass and lackluster presentation.

Good, But Can You Have Too Much Bass?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I know headphones are meant to be heard, not seen, but for premium devices these make no statement at all. In solid gray (including the few buttons), they look totally generic. I wish there had been more visual impact to the design. Further, the packaging seemed excessive. Mine were delivered by a national delivery company and so there were 3 Sony-branded boxes, one inside the other. Seems wasteful and unnecessary. As for the headphones themselves, it's mostly, but not exclusively, good news. They are quite comfortable with the expected adjustment band for different size heads. While there is no manual, per se, pairing the headphones to my Android phone was easy with little fuss. The downloaded app makes setup easy and quick. I listened to expansive orchestral music and some contemporary singers, solo instrumentals and other types of music. One prominent "feature" of these headphones is enhanced bass. It's true. Strong bass was evident in most sources, but especially in the classical symphonic music. Bass is adjustable by repeatedly pushing the "ULT" button, but I found it nearly overwhelming, even in the lowest setting. How much bass is desired is always a matter of personal preference, but I wish it had one "step" further down. The noise cancelling featured work amazingly well. Compared to my decades-old Bose, the improvement is remarkable. For travelers, an airline cable is included as well as a charging cable. The buttons for bass, noise, on/off are located on the left headset. Since the majority of us are right handed, I found the placement a bit awkward. In sum, these are perfectly adequate headsets for most people. I found little that makes them especially different other than the understated design and the ability to control bass (mostly) effectively.

Great midrange over ear option.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a mid-range set of headphones, this Sony set has elevated what I expect from a midrange headphone. I tend to be the type of person who likes a more bassy sound from my over ear headphones, this set really fills that niche for me. The nice thing is that even with the extra bass the sound quality still sounds good. I don’t feel like the mid and high end are overly distorted even with the bass boosted. I like the fact that even at this level the noise cancellation sounds just as good as a Bose set from several years ago at a fraction of the price. Sony really has some of the best noise cancellation in today’s set of available products. I also like the fact that you can dial in how much “passthrough” you can get with the app to tune it for your current environment or wherever it may be that you use the headphones normally. The only thing that I really noticed that I was not initially a fan of is that the entire headphone is mostly plastic. I understand at this price point that that is probably to be expected but after using the headphones for a bit the build quality overall other than the plastic feel is quite nice. I don’t necessarily feel like they are overly flimsy, nor do I feel like I’m going to break them or anything just by using them which is a plus. The only other real thing of note is if you get warm easily the earcup cushions do get a little warm if you’re wearing them for extended periods of time.

Doesn't work as advertised
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought these with the impression they could be better than Skullcandy crushers. The Cons: The sound quality was pretty good but the headphones could not handle a lot of bass heavy music without getting crackly. Also feel like I had to turn them all the way up to get to a decent volume. No top headband cushion so could only wear for so long. Touch features were cool but we're also sensitive to being touched. Was kind of an inconvenience when working out as I would constantly brush up against them and it would mess with my music. The Pros: Touch and sensor features are nice, battery life is great. Overall was disappointed that $200 Sony headphones could not live up to what was advertised and was returned shortly after using. If you're looking for bass forward headphones with great sound quality. Get Skullcandy Crushers ANC 2.

Alot of Headphone for the price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had this for about a week and really enjoying all the options for sound choices. In fact, I am still in the exploring stage. Being a musician I tend to be a little more critical and I look for clarity, tone and usability. So in using the Phones, one has to take into account, especially when it comes to music, different genres are mixed in different ways, therefore, when using ULT bass option you have to consider that you will definitely have different results when it comes to how the bass is mixed in the studio for that genre. I found with some styles of music I did not find ULT very useful. Other styles had very good results. The adaptive sound control worked pretty decently when sitting or Moving around. The EQ has 9 choices, I only noticed subtle differences mostly tonal changes and bass enhancements or up front vocals. Again very minor changes. For 360 reality audio to work, you will need a subscription. You can also set custom EQ along with multiple other choices. One EQ in particular “Excited” almost presents as a live sound, a lot of Enhancement involved. I do like having control for switching tracks within the app being connected to Spotify (My Choice). Sony has packed these headphones with a lot of options for the listener to help you Experience the music as the artist intended. I also feel the noise cancelling worked very well. There is also DSEE you can set to auto for upscale. I found the ear pads very comfortable. This is great especially if you happen to wear glasses. Other phones became burdensome and Fatigued my ears. Also helps having a good balance of mostly a Plastic housing along with metal where needed. I also liked the pause feature when removing the headphones and auto play when phones were placed back on my head. No need To press any buttons to restart a song. This is a perfect match for a price and feature packed headphone to give you something decent without breaking the bank.

Comfortable, can disable ANC, sound great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I switched from sennheiser momentum 4 to these bc the always on ANC was causing ear problems…you literally can’t disable ANC on sennheiser or bose headphones, only multiple levels of ANC or transparency…I am stunned by how good these sony’s sound, not as good as the sennheiser’s but very close…plus the ear cups have the most room I’ve found to get my whole ear to fit…and disabling ANC is easy…THESE SHOULD BE ON EVERY LIST!!!

Best headphones for smaller heads
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love these headphones! I was weary because Sony was never on my list of headphones to try. I tend to gravitate towards Apple, Beats, or Bose. I tried on Apple Airpod Max and the headband was too big so i returned them. Same thing for the Bose Quiet Comfort— I couldnt look down without either of them sliding off. For reference, my head is smaller. I tried these in store and looked up down and around mimicking different exercises where my headphones would potentially fall out, and these, in comparison to others, stayed snug and secure! Sound quality is comparable to Bose and Apple products— in my opinion!

Bass and other sounds
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got the ULT Wear in White to my small collection of headphones. This set has a few firsts for Sony. First, the name: It's not a mix of letter and numbers. ULT is the Line and WEAR is the portable version of the ULT line of speakers. The others being party speakers, these emphasize BASS. They do have a Sony nomenclature but it's not advertised: WH-ULT900N Design wise, they very much look like other Sony over the ear headsets. Although it's all plastic construction, there's some quality to it. The headband is very plush and barely notice it. The earcups are very supportive and can wear these all day. The controls are similar to other Sony sets, with some unique quirks: There is a power button that one has to hold for a few seconds to turn on, and longer for pairing, or hold to power off. A small light with different shows status. It's small and not too bright. Then there is a larger button that switches between ANC or Ambient mode (Hear through). Annoyingly, there are beeps but not a voice response confirming in which mode it is, although one will soon find out. Oddly there is no way to disable ANC/Ambient from the headphones, it can only be disabled back via the phone app because double clicking the same button is meant to launch sponsored apps instead, for some reason. Then closer to the outer side of the ear cup, there is a large ULT button that controls the level of bass, from two pre-set settings, or disable it (3 Settings total). To confirm which mode it is, the headphone has a distinctive, very loud noise it makes that sounds like shattered glass. It takes some getting used to. Track and volume controls are via the touch-sensitive surface on the right earcup. On older Sony headphones this was a hit or miss, but I'm happy to report that works surprisingly well here. Another nice feature is that covering the right earcup with a hand lowers the music volume and lets the ambient noise in. Ideal when interacting with someone. Removing the left earcup (not the right) pauses the music and resumes it once back on. This works very well and had no false responses. There is also an analog audio jack (to be used with airplane ports or computers). Charge is via USB-C, but keep in mind that it does not support USB audio, it's only for charging, and frustratingly, the headphones don't work while charging. Bluetooth is Multipoint, meaning it can simultaneously connect to two devices (as in a phone and a laptop), and while it does not mix audio sources, whichever comes last can be heard. This is the way many higher end headsets works. There is an app required to control the headset, and it's Sony's Headphone Connect. This is the same application that's used on most of their headphones, and it's been refined for many years so it works very well. It has some useful features, when enabled, like adaptive sound control, which tracks the location via the phone and other activities to automatically switch from aware to ANC. Like commuting to an office or school and changing modes along the way. It also displays the Bluetooth codec used (AAC for iPhone or SBC for Android). It advertises fast pairing for Android and Easy Pairing for Windows. Standard pairing for Apple devices, which is quite simple. I noticed that unlike older headsets in Sony's 900 series, it doesn't support Sony's high bandwidth ALAC codec (Which I used when connected to a Sony receiver) and doesn't advertise HD audio. Likely for the limited Bluetooth codecs. Within the app, noticed that when logged in, it can store to Sony's cloud which sounds are played, which I find odd, to say the least. When logged in the application provides settings backup and other functions as well. I tried to set up 360 Audio that is advertised with these speakers but I found it a waste of time. It requires a subscription to a 3rd party app, and while I knew it wouldn't work with Apple Music, I couldn't set it up with Amazon Music, but might work on Tidal (Which I'm not currently subscribed to) Not interested in a subscription for the headphones. Battery: It's advertised as 50 Hs without ANC/Ambient, or 30 Hs with either. This is impressive. It works well with phone calls, and one can replace the phone's assistant (Siri or Google) with Alexa, when paired with the headset. What left me unimpressed is the sound. It sounds nice and clear, with plenty of bass. I find the high bass setting too much, but to each its own. When using ANC or ambient mode, the sound doesn't sound as vibrant as expected, it lacks body. It's crisp and detailed, but fiddling with the EQ settings didn't hit the spot for me. Overall, it's a nice set, with good ANC and plenty of settings, but it's not quite ideal. Using it for a few days, I didn't find a sound profile I could enjoy, but for someone that just cannot get enough bass, this is the pair to get.

Posted .Hi emiliosic,
Thanks for sharing your in-depth review and experience with the ULT WEAR headphones. We're glad that you like the design, comfort, ULT button, touch sensor, and multipoint function of the headphones. Your feedback about the controls, charging function, 360 Reality Audio subscription, and sound quality is greatly appreciated. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the headphones is up-to-date (via the Sony Headphones Connect app).
The functions of the NC/AMB (noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode) button can be adjusted on the Sony app.
When CLEAR BASS is set to high, it may be difficult to obtain the effect of ULT2. Here are the functions of the ULT button:
ULT1: This setting emphasizes the deep bass range over other sounds.
ULT2: This setting emphasizes powerful sound more than ULT1.
OFF: Turns off the ULT button setting.
Additionally, you can adjust the Sony app's equalizer to tailor-fit the sound quality to your needs.
