I am very satisfied with these earbuds. The noise cancelling is not as good as over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones, but the comfort of using earbuds makes it a fair trade.

    - The signal will cut out a lot, you will think your left bud is broken. - It also is not very ergonomic, sticking out of your ear. - Charging case is big, probably 3x the size of airpod case. - Noise cancelling doesn't work well at all, I struggle to hear the difference and it sucks in the city. - Don't get it if you want to use it to play games or watch videos, there is a delay of about 1 second for me on most of my devices.

My Sony WF-1000X Wireless Headphones showed up this week and I have mixed feelings after giving them a full testing. I've been looking for wireless earbud headphones for a while now and haven't been able to find a pair with great sound, comfort and feature packed. I was hopeful these would be the answer…and they are…kinda. Spoiler alert - I would recommend them, but still feel like there's a better sounding option out there. Sony’s packaging is top-notch ad well thought out to protects the equipment and looks great. The first thing I noticed upon opening the box was the small size of the WF-1000X unit itself. I’ve tried a number of other earphones and have found some to be too large for everyday use/running/biking. These earbuds are very small in comparison. So far so good! What’s in the box: the earbuds, charging case, charging cable and S, M and L earpieces and paperwork/quick start guide. In terms of a quick start guide, it's pretty straight forward. Take the left bud out of the case and power it up and connect once the lights start flashing blue/red. Once connected, power on the right earbud and go. Only problem was I couldn’t get the left earbud to turn on. The power switch is small based on the overall size of the earbud and I figured I wasn’t hitting it properly. I tried the right bud and it would power up. I tried a couple times through the Bluetooth setup on my iPhone and then downloaded the Sony Headphones Connect App. I put them in the case and charged them for 20-30 minutes to make sure it wasn’t a power issue (most electronics come with somewhat of a charge out of the box). Tried again and still nothing? This time, I made a point of really pressing the earbuds into the charging case…”pop” and they were in and charging. Turns out I wasn’t pushing them in hard enough to charge. Problem solved, after an hour or so of charging, I popped the left out, powered it up and connected to my iPhone no problem. So kind of a user error, but figured I’d point it out as others may have the same issue. The buds came with a medium sized fitment attached and they seemed to fit pretty well, so fired up some tunes to see what they’re all about. After walking around a bit, I noticed the right earbud was somewhat loose and had to readjust it a couple of times. They are meant to be inserted and twisted into a “locked” position within the ear. There are soft tabs that come off the back of the bud that helps lock them into place. The sound quality is good, but was lacking that rich bass sound. I opened the Sony Headphone App and it is actually really feature rich and has a bunch of sound adjustments in the form of pre-programed equalizer settings. Sure enough, was able to adjust with a little extra bass and now I really excited. I’m not an audiophile by any means, and there are a number of setups to try…so most users will get the sound setup they are after. The app also provides settings for the ambient sound/noise cancelling features. They were set on noise cancelling and it really works. My wife was talking to me from right across the room and I couldn’t hear a word…perfect! Just kidding honey! Phone calls sounded crisp and clear on both ends. The headphones are set up so the phone is only audible within the left earphone...the control and mic are both on the right side. Not a big deal, but was hoping for the call to come across in both. Next, I ran a quick 3 miles to see if they would hold in place and sound the same outside. The sound quality was great outdoors and the ambient settings are great allowing the user to select how much of the outside world comes through. The connection was solid from both my iPhone and my Apple Watch. Now I can run with just my watch and these headphones and still stay in touch with the outside world...if wanted! There was a bit of fiddling needed at times to make sure the earbud was solidly in place while running. Pros - great quality Sony construction, fit and functionality - Noise Cancelling / Ambient settings - easy to setup and use right out of the box with or without the Sony Headphones app (just make sure they’re charged first!) - Included portable charging case for additional battery life - Phone calls are easy to manage and with excellent sound quality - Strong Bluetooth - Never lost connection, even with going in other rooms in my house - One of the smallest truly wireless headphones out there Cons: - Phone calls are in left earbud only, was hoping for stereo to make it easier to hear calls while active - Earbuds did move around in my ear a bit, seemed to not want to “lock” into place that easily - Was never able to get the rich full sound quality I was after, but can get close with adjustments on the app I would recommend these truly wireless headphones if you're looking for great sounding, comfortable headphones that have plenty of features and support phone calling / Siri. The addition of noise cancelling is an added bonus!

I bought these based on the good reviews for the full size over the ear 1000, unfortunately these are nowhere near the class of those. These failed miserably in stable connection, sound and build quality. I am not sure if I got a bad pair because the audio sounded distorted with all kinds of music. The connection kept dropping out on one side constantly. I was using an iPhone 8 as the BT a player. I never tested call quality as I was very disappointed right off the bat.

I've reviewed Sony headphones in the past and I was anxious to try these out. Wireless is definitely the way to go, and I have about five pair of different ones from different manufacturers. Some are really easy to set up and just start enjoying, some take a bit more playing around with. The Sony 1000x's fall in the latter category. This is not to say they sound bad, quite the contrary, they sound very good. But, compared to other brands I've used, they just take more work to get to that point. To start with, the overall design is quite nice. No wires at all, each one is individual. The size is very good. Just big enough so that you can manipulate them easily, but not so big they look silly in your ears. Sony, like a lot of higher end designer ear buds has opted for a nice charging case to easily charge them in, and it protects them at the same time. The case is nice, but doesn't seem to offer any way to charge the buds without actually plugging it in to a USB port. Other brands cases also include a battery inside the case that will charge their buds without being plugged in. The case also took some getting used to when inserting the buds. It took me a few tries to get it right. The small LED's on each one look really cool, not just a small pinpoint of light, but a larger reflected color that looks high end. Pairing was, well not as quick and easy as it should have been. I'm used to putting in the buds and just powering them up to get a Bluetooth connection. I have an S8 so this should be an easy thing. These you have to take out only the left bud, press and hold the button for seven seconds ant then release. After that you can go to your phone settings and hopefully find them in the available devices. This also took a couple of tries before it would connect. After it connects, you can remove the other bud and then the two of them connect to each other. Sizing them to your ears is very critical to get good sound. The first set of tips I used made the buds sound very thin and tinny with almost no bass. Experimenting with other tips (and there are plenty) finally allowed me to dial in some really good sound. When I say really good, I mean these guys sound very clean with the right amount of bass. This again was not my original experience right out of the box. I didn't get good sound until I downloaded the Sony app. It was from this app that I was able to select an EQ signature and adjust the volume. That's right, there's no volume controls on the buds themselves, you have to use your phones' volume controls. But these will only let you go up as loud as the app has been set to. As I said, these do sound very good and I'm just glad I had the patience to play around with them for as long as I did. The noise canceling seems to work well and there are several choices you have through the app to set this to your favorite setting. Final thoughts. The sound of these guys is really worth the time it took fiddling with them. That being said, I have wireless ear buds from other manufacturers that took a fraction of the time to set up and sounded just as good. I occasionally get a 1 second drop out in sound from the right bud. It's not a huge deal, but it is a minor annoyance. The pictograph quick start sheet is huge and has no wording or explanations on it at all. I felt like I was trying to assemble something from Ikea. The regular instruction sheet had a lot more information on it, but the text is so tiny, it was literally impossible to read by itself. I like the selection of ear tips, and the buds are comfortable to wear. They are quite light weight. The storage/charging case is nice and after you get used to it, easy to use. All in all I loved the sound, but was not a fan of all the extra time I had to spend just to get a good sound.

I am a professional audio producer, and these are definitely not producing studio-quality sound. That said, if you are buying true wireless buds, you are an early adopter of this technology and you know that's not what you're buying with these up front. Their sound quality is vastly superior to the other true wireless buds I've tried. These are my 3rd pair of true-wireless buds in a week and a half, and I think im going to keep these. Disclaimer, it is my second day of ownership. I tried Jaybird Runs, and Rowkin Bit Stereo-Charge. I was really disappointed with the Jaybird sound quality - there was clear distortion at very normal volumes, and the case was pretty cumbersome in your pocket. The Rowkins just didn't want to stay in my ears (I use the small tips on any headphones, to gauge my ear size). These definitely create a very tight seal deep inside your ear canal and are pretty stable once seated. I'm really pleased with the app, which I think is much more functional than the Jaybird app which is really only capable of boosting lows or highs in a pretty brutish way. These are definitely not the most sleek headphones out there, but i think the comfort and sound quality make it worth the trade off. People complain about a lag when playing video, but the new firmware has really improved it so that I don't notice much of a delay at all. The case fits comfortably in your pocket and locks the headphones in so they don't fall out when you open it - a problem with the jaybirds. Overall, I am very happy with these headphones which connected easily, have strong connection, and great sound. I would recommend these to anyone who wants to try something a little more audio-phile friendly than the airpods.
