      Hi HeadphonesUser,

Great! You definitely made the right choice. We're glad you're enjoying the features and overall sound quality of our industry-leading, noise-canceling Truly Wireless headphones. We appreciate your feedback on using these WF-1000XM3 for workout. We recommend using headphones that were designed to be used for working out. These headphones can be used for running. However, the unit is not waterproof. So make sure to prevent the water or sweat from entering the unit. If the earbud tips tend to come off, change the earbud tips to another size to comfortably and snugly fit your left and right ears.

Minimal audio lag, but lacking for the price

PRO -Good battery life. Most of the Bluetooth wireless earbuds I've tried had poor battery life, getting four hours tops. Sony advertises 6 - 8 hours with these, and that seems to be accurate in my use. Enabling the noise cancelling will drop that down a little, but not too much. Having the case double as a battery for on the go charging also makes it easy to get a full day's use without needing to plug them in. -Almost no lag. the biggest problem I've had with the many "true wireless" earbuds in the past was severe audio lag. Nearly all of them use one bud as the control unit to get the audio from the source device and then that bud transmits it to the other bud. That extra step induces noticeable lag so audio doesn't sync with what's on screen when watching videos ( I've seen anywhere between 250 - 500 ms lag ). Sony designed the WF-1000XM3 so both earbuds connect directly to the audio source device. There's still about 100ms of audio lag, but you generally have to look for it to notice it. That said, most headphones or wired neckband buds don't have any, so if you need immediate audio response from your earbuds, these won't do it for you. -Audio quality. Music clarity and quality is about as good as you can do with a small earbud. The mobile app also has a nice equalizer to adjust the sound curve to your tastes. -Customizable touch controls. These borrow a similar touch interface of the larger Sony 1000 series headphones. Controls are grouped into three categories: playback, ANC, and voice assistant. The mobile app lets you choose which earbud controls which category and whether you want to use quick taps or press and hold touch patterns for each. It's a nice option. -Seven different eartips. Sony includes a wide selection of eartips in both silicone and foam materials. Unfortunately you don't get a storage bag to hold them, but this is a minor complaint as most people will choose one tip and forget the rest. SUBJECTIVE -Fit. Though you get a wide size range of eartips as mentioned, sadly, they're all the same dome shape. If that works for you, great, no worries. If you like double flange or multiple layer tips, no can do. These earbuds also have no ear hooks; the fit is solely based on contact with your ear canal. The SS tips fit best for me, but I couldn't get the small foam one to work well. That's odd as foam tips usually work best for me with other earbuds. I never had a problem with them feeling unsecure or falling out, but I never got a really good fit either. Those with deeper, large ear canals will probably have a better fit. The frame was also large enough that it was in constant contact with the back edge of my ear ( auricle ). It wasn't necessarily uncomfortable, but it was definitely noticeable. CON -Expensive. At $230, you're in the same price point as premium headsets, which inherently have a richer sound and better ANC bolstered by their natural passive NC from surrounding your whole ear. -No volume control. Despite having customizable touch controls, there are no options to control volume on the earbuds themselves. You have to use your phone or whatever audio source device you're using. Why Sony decided to not include it, I haven't the foggiest. -No LDAC, apt-X, or HD audio codec. Considering most of Sony's other headphones and earbuds support at least one codec better than normal AAC streaming, it's odd their premier earbuds don't. The phone companion app can use Sony's DSEE DSP for your music, but that's not very useful if you're already using well-compressed hi-res audio files. -Noise cancelling is iffy. As this is an earbud, the majority of noise cancelling is based on how well the buds fit your ears and seal against your ear canal. If you can't get a perfect fit, the noise cancelling will be lacking. The tiny driver also isn't as good at generating the virtual frequencies to cancel out ambient sounds. At low volumes it was easy to hear some hissing in the background. The phone app also can do dynamic cancelling, where the ANC strength is adjusted for your environment. It works well most of the time, but I had more than a few times where it switched to a different ANC profile for no reason and the audio quality suffered a lot due to it. -No water-resistant rating. -Short charging cable. Just like the 1000 series Sony headphones, you get a short ~8" charge cable for the case and no wall adapter. I won't fault them on no wall adapter, since most people who will buy these probably already have a couple extras on hand. But it would be nice if the cable was a little longer. Or if nothing else, allow the cable to be stored in the charge case as well. -Charge case only for earbuds. If the case is supposed to be a portable battery to charge the earbuds, why not add an extra USB out port on it so it could also charge your phone or other device? -Blinking lights. The forward edge of each bud has an LED that will blink, indicating device status. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to turn it off. When in a dark or low-light room, it's rather distracting seeing flashes of light off your glasses or reflecting from your phone/tablet screen. Not the sort of thing you want if you're the type to watch media on your phone at night. OVERALL I typically prefer full headphones to earbuds, but I'm always willing to try new buds to see if they can change my mind. Earbuds have some distinct advantages, namely the smaller size for better portability, a more discreet look, and in some situations a headband impression in your hair is unacceptable. But when headphones typically offer a better sound range, longer battery life, better ANC, and a more forgiving fit where ear shape isn't as critical to all-day comfort, earbuds really need to nail their feature set to be competitive with headphones when marketed at a similar price. The Sony WF-1000XM3 is a good product. Audio quality is good, battery life is impressive for such small buds, and the travel charge case is quite nice ( though perhaps a smidge larger than something I consider all-day pocket-friendly ). However, it still has noticeable audio lag ( even if much improved ) and the lack of volume control is almost a deal-breaker for me. I'd say perhaps Sony's other 1000 product, the WH-1000MX3 headphones, are the biggest challenge to the 1000 earbuds. Now yes, headphones and earbuds don't overlap in all use cases. But apart from the larger size, those headphones do everything the earbuds do except better and offer more features ( apt-X and LDAC codesc, 3.5mm connectivity, and volume control ). If you don't absolutely need earbuds and can carry the larger headphone travel case, I'd say most people would be better served saving up the extra money for the WH-1000XM3. When compared against typical $150 true wireless earbuds, these new Sony earbuds don't fare much better. The noise cancelling is a little better and the audio lag much lower, but otherwise they're almost identical to their competitors, especially the JLab Epic Air. Is that worth $80 more? I think if these were in the $175 range they'd be a much more compelling product.
