I've previously had a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3. They're fantastic! But I got to a point where I need some wireless earbuds that could give me some great noise cancellation. Packaging for the WF-1000XM6 was nice because it's all eco-friendly. It comes with a short USB-C charging cable (USB-A on one end and USB-C on the other). I love these short cables. I've got plenty of 6' ones that I use in my home office to charge various electronics. These short ones I use in my car to make sure I don't pick up my phone while driving. Also included in the package are Extra Small, Small and Large ear tips. With the Medium ear tips already installed. I immediately tried to the Medium ear tips and made my way down to the Extra Small. The Extra small worked great for me. I charged up the case to 100% and then scanned the QR code to get the Sound Connect App. I was intrigued that it isn't Sony branded. Setup wasn't hard at all. I got the earbuds connected pretty quickly. To be honest, I didn't have much setup involved. The default sound profile fit my needs pretty quickly. However, I do appreciate there is a customizable equalizer in the app that allows me to fine tune to my personal tastes. There are also a handful of equalizer presets like: Heavy, Clear, Hard, Soft, Game, Manual and a couple custom ones. Of course, with new electronics, there was a firmware update waiting for me in the app. I was surprised at how long it took though. It took about an hour for the firmware to download and apply. I'm accustomed to 5 maybe 10 minutes. So I'm not sure what this update entailed, but I let it apply anyways. One of my pet peeves with many earbuds is that the ear tips that isolate the sound make me feel like I’m listening to things underwater. Sony got it right! These are the first earbuds that have that sound isolating ear tips that don't make me feel like I'm listening to everything underwater! It's such a relief. This alone made a huge difference in my listening pleasure with these earbuds. Sound from these WF-1000XM6 is fantastic. Music sounds great. How could it not? My previous WH-1000XM3 were ahead of its time, but in the meantime Sony has had a lot of time to make these spectacular. The noise cancellation is top notch! I took them into a shop room and these XM6 earbuds kept up with all the saws, hammering and conversations. I also ran a vacuum at home and these earbuds took care of the noise too. One setting I did not like out of the box is the Ambient Sound. It was set way too high for my tastes. It was incorrectly amplifying things like my robotic vacuum. It just seemed fake. However, when you go into the Sound Connect app, you can click on the Ambient Sound Control panel and adjust the level to where you like it. It's not as real time as I would have liked. You slide the bar to a level and then let the ear buds adjust to that level. But that's OK. This is one of those set it and forget it settings. I set mine at level 10, which is right in the middle. Performance in a call was equally great. I took these earbuds out on a walk with a good breeze going on. I asked the other end if they could hear any extra noise and they were surprised I was outside. They couldn't hear any wind noise. When the WH-1000XM3 were introduced, they came out with several touch gestures which were innovate at the time. Took me a little to get used to because I had previously only used physical buttons. The WF-1000XM6 continue the touch controls and it's appreciated in this kind of form factor. The gestures were easy to learn and there are some additional voice controls and head gestures that can be utilized to add further control! Battery life is pretty decent when you consider how hard these earbuds work to cancel noise. 8 hours on a charge with 24 hours of charge in the case. They offer quick charge with 5 minutes giving you an hour. So run them for your work morning, charge them during lunch and then run them for your work afternoon, throw them back in the case while you get to the gym and you've still got plenty of charge for a work out. Sony really perfected the earbuds to what I needed. I can't fathom what future earbud generations will include. They knocked out my pet peeve of sound isolation making it seem like things were underwater. These sound great and the noise cancellation gives me enough customization to meet my tastes. I think these are going to be my daily drivers for the foreseeable future.

I'm astonished by how low effort this is from Sony. If you compare the sound quality to the Airpods Pro 3s (yet alone the pro 2s) you'll notice how much they tuned up the bass at the expense of all other aspects. The ANC is pitiful. Without the poor foam eartips (which do 90% of the work here and fall apart the second you try to clean them) you get quality that only rivals the bargain bin Onn brand. I returned my XM5s and sadly I'll be returning these as well. Sony just can't compete with the likes of Bose and Apple and it's more apparent this year than ever.

    Too touch sensitive

These actually do have the best sound and noise cancelling of any ear buds I've used. Sony has made some advancements with this new model, but it also has some tradeoffs. The buds themselves are larger, and they protrude a little farther from your ear. They're also a little less intuitive on how they should be positioned in your ear, as evidenced by the setup screen in the app that has you hold the camera up so the app can check their orientation. It did take some tweaking with the size of the tips to get a perfect fit, which is unusual for me. Most buds fit me correctly straight from the box. However, to get the best noise cancelling from these, you need to get that perfect fit. One notable improvement in the noise cancelling is the absence of wind noise when using them outdoors. All of my other earbuds tend to amplify wind noise when they're in noise-cancelling mode, but it was barely noticeable with these. The low-end performance of these buds is nothing short of amazing. I didn't think it could get any better than my last set of Sonys, but these up the bass performance even more. The biggest downside to these is one of the features: touch controls. Though the sweat resistance is great, nearly every time I would try to wipe sweat away from my ears with a towel, I would inadvertently activate one or both of the touch controls on the buds. It gets very annoying while you're trying to focus on your workout but have to keep turning your music or the noise-cancelling back on. I think that's exacerbated by how far the buds protrude, but I have the same problem with other touch-sensitive buds. So these are great for everything but cardio workouts.

In addition to their excellent noise cancellation and incredible sound quality, the Sony WF-1000MX6 earbuds have a host of advanced features related to ease of use and convenience, but require the owner to have to do some digging to find out about them and how to activate and configure them. More on that later. For the record, my usage and testing was done on a Google Pixel 10 Pro Android phone, so does not address any differences for an iPhone owner. Case and Charging The earbuds come in a nice, compact case with a sort of matte finish. There is a USB-C port for charging but they can also be charge wirelessly, and the simple design of the case makes it easy to set on a charging pad. According to Sony, the case itself holds enough for two full recharges of the earbuds. I have not had enough to determine the typical lifetime of a charge (Sony says 8 hours), but in any case it is somewhat dependent on the options and features that are in use (e.g. active noise cancellation requires more processing and audio power). The other thing of note about the case is a small button that is used if you want to pair them with an additional device after the initial pairing. The buds support two concurrent Bluetooth connections. I was able to connect them with my Pixel Watch 4 and play music directly from my watch with no trouble. Pairing via Sound Connect Before doing anything with the earbuds, it is necessary to install “Sony Sound Connect” from the app store, as pretty much anything that you can do with them is done via the app. The earbuds came with no written documentation at all (other than the usual disclaimers and warranty info) but they are ready to pair as soon as you open the case. This initial connection is made using the Connect app, which then leads you through other initial setup options. Anything that you set at this time can be changed later, and there is always the option of setting them back to their initial state. I was anxious to see how they worked, rushed through the initial setup, and missed a few things that I had to go back to later. Fit and Feel These are the first earbuds I’ve used that come with four sets of tips instead of the usual three. Usually I’m good with the default “medium” tips but with these I ended up using different size tips on the right vs left to get a good seal. The Connect app has a utility function (under Device Settings) that tests for a fit with the good seal that is preferred for best ANC performance, and it was useful for me to get the best tip for each ear. The buds are on the large side compared to what’s typical, which is not surprising considering how much processing power is packed into them. They stuck out of my ears more than I’m used to and required a bit of twisting around to get them seated well. Again, the Connect app has a very handy function that uses your phone camera held in front of you to tell you if you are wearing them correctly, and it assisted me in finding the best fit. That said, I’m not yet confident enough to wear them when running or in any situation where it would be hard to retrieve one if it fell out (but that’s why they make “sports” earbuds!). Controls and Settings I have tested a lot of earbuds and it’s also interesting – as well as frustrating – to see how each manufacturer handles the standard controls differently. I’d say that 90% of my interactions with my earbuds consist of pausing and restarting music, changing the volume, answering phone calls, and changing ANC modes. I found Sony’s defaults – especially for volume adjustment – inconvenient at best but was able to use the app to change them, although not at a fine granularity; more like changing one set of defaults for another. Surprisingly, I was not able via the app to find out anything about the phone interface, such as how to answer an incoming call. I finally got that information from one of Sony’s Youtube videos that I found in a search. In fact, the best way to learn about the many advanced features of these earbuds and where to find the settings in the app is by searching for Youtube videos from either Sony or third-party tech producers. The settings are all there in the app, but the app doesn’t really explain well exactly what the features are and how they work. Voice Commands and Gestures Among the more advanced features are a couple that I found to be very useful. They can of course be enabled in the Device Settings section of the Sound Connect app. - Speak to Chat. If you’re listening to something and have ANC on, this lets you turn off the ANC, open the buds to outside sound, and have a conversation with someone just by starting to speak. When finished, there’s a timeout period and it will then go back to what you were listening to. I found that it’s a bit easy to activate accidentally, but the main drawback is that it doesn’t pause what you were listening to – a feature that it would be nice to have, at least as an option. I listen to a lot of podcasts and it’s very inconvenient to talk to someone for a few seconds and then have to run the podcast back to hear what I missed. The standard alternative for speak-to-chat is to press and continue holding the touch point on the left earbud for the duration of the conversation; easy to do but feels a bit awkward (and still has the no-pause issue). - Headphone voice commands. This lets you say “Hey headphones” (yes, really!) and issue commands to play music, skip to the next song, and a few other simple things. You can transfer from the headphone voice support to your phone’s assistant (e.g., Gemini) by saying “Assistant”. If the headphone commands are disabled, the buds respond to the usual assistant command (“Hey Google” in my case). - Head gestures for phone control. This one is really nice and is my favorite as, when a call comes in, you can simply nod your head to accept the call or shake your head to reject it. Easy to do in a hands-free way instead of the standard way of having to reach up and do a double-tap on either earbud. Nice feature! ANC The Automatic Noise Cancellation works about as well as anything I’ve used and has some features that let it adapt to particular environments by their location and to reduce the volume in situations where there might be sudden loud sounds (again, look in the app’s Device Settings section). One thing that I appreciated is that it performs its ANC function without making my ears feel like they’re “plugged up” or under pressure. I would not trade this comfort factor for having total ANC isolation, which just feels weird. It will also adjust (optional setting) to your current activity: if at rest, such as sitting down, it will go into full ANC but if you are walking or running it will allow more ambient sounds in. Sound Performance Simply amazing and the best thing about this product. I’m no audiophile but these sound as good to me as over-the-ear headphones that I’ve used. There is even tuning available via the app to experience real surround-sound effects. In any case, if you are an audiophile, there are numerous features having to do with equalizer and mixer settings, multiple sound profiles for different types of music, and so on. The surround effect is especially impressive: you can start with the music or video sounding like it’s directly in front of you, and when you turn your head to the right, the sound shifts toward your left. Turn 180 degrees and it sounds like it’s behind you! It’s amazingly good. Conclusions I’ve barely gone through all of the things that these earbuds will do and the settings you can control without ending up with a magazine-length review. Suffice it to say that these will sound great out-of-the box and that the basics are easy to learn, but if you are willing to put in some time to learn and experiment with all that’s there, these could be the best earbuds/headphones you’ve ever owned!

      Hello Doug G,

      Thank you for choosing Sony!

It brings us great joy to hear that your WF-1000XM6 earbuds are delivering the excellent noise cancellation, incredible sound quality, and advanced convenience features you were looking for. We truly appreciate how thoughtfully you explored the case design, USB-C and wireless charging, and multi-device connection with your Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel Watch 4, as well as how you noted battery behavior in real-world use.

It’s especially helpful to hear your detailed experience with the Sony Sound Connect app—from the initial setup and lack of printed documentation to the learning curve in discovering and configuring all the options. Your comments about needing to look to videos for deeper explanations give us valuable insight into how we can make those features easier to understand and access.

We’re glad the extra ear tip options, fit test, and wear detection tools helped you dial in a proper seal and comfort, even with the more compact but powerful design of the buds. Your perspective on when you’d use these versus sports earbuds is very insightful. We also value your candid thoughts on touch control defaults and how you adjusted them, as well as your experience with call handling and the phone interface.

Hearing how you’re using advanced functions like Speak-to-Chat, headphone voice commands, and head-gesture call control is fantastic, and your notes about accidental activation and podcast listening are especially useful for us. We’re equally pleased that the adaptive ANC feels effective without pressure or “plugged up” ears, and that the environment- and activity-based adjustments are working well for you.

Finally, your praise for the overall sound performance, surround effects, and deep customization in the app means a great deal—especially coming from someone who has spent time experimenting with the many features. Knowing that, with some exploration, these could be the best earbuds or headphones you’ve ever owned is exactly the kind of feedback that inspires our team to keep innovating.

      Best regards,
      -Fred Sony_US

    Best earbuds I've ever used

If you're looking for earbuds that seriously up the game in sound quality and active noise cancellation (ANC), the new Sony WF-1000XM6s are worth checking out—even if their branding is a little low-key. Speaking as someone who’s used a bunch of Sony earbuds over the years, I keep coming back to them because the audio is always top-notch and the fit is just more comfortable than most. I can wear them for hours without any issues. This latest model actually fixes a lot of the sound and ANC complaints I’ve had with other brands. The design is still super ergonomic, so the buds stay put and don’t bug your ears. Right out of the box, the audio sounds fantastic—no need to mess with EQ settings unless you want to. That said, if you’re into customizing your sound, the Sony Sound Connect app makes it easy, with lots of EQ options, presets, and manual tweaks. Clarity is excellent across all frequencies, and there’s even a background music feature that gives you those cozy coffee shop vibes while you listen. When it comes to ANC, these earbuds really shine. They block out a ton of outside noise, which makes it way easier to focus whether you’re at home, commuting, or just out for a walk. There are handy presets for different activities like sitting still, walking, running, or riding public transport. You can let the earbuds automatically detect your environment, or adjust things yourself if you prefer. The ambient mode even has a slider so you can pick exactly how much outside sound you let in, and there’s an option to prioritize voices—super useful if you want to hear announcements or someone talking to you. The bone conduction mics do a great job filtering out random noises while you’re moving around, and each earbud has multiple microphones to keep your audio clear. On calls, the sound is crystal clear for you and whoever you’re talking to, and you can connect to your phone and laptop at the same time without a hitch. Just a heads-up: if you want to mute your mic, you’ll have to do it in your chat app, not on the earbuds themselves. The Ambient Sound setting is a nice touch for calls, since it lets you hear your own voice naturally instead of feeling like you’re talking in a vacuum. The charging case is small and easy to carry, with a solid latch and battery life—up to eight hours per charge. If you’re in a hurry, a five-minute charge gives you about an hour of listening time. Pairing is simple, thanks to the physical button on the case, and I haven’t had any connection issues swapping between devices. All in all, the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds are a big step forward for Sony. While they might not be quite as comfortable as some of the outside-the-ear-canal styles, the sound quality and ANC are seriously impressive. The price isn’t nothing, but if you’re willing to invest, I think you’ll be really happy with them for everyday use.

      Hi Waggly,

We could not be more pleased to hear that the WF-1000XM6 has become your new go-to for daily listening. It is fantastic to see such a deep dive into the features we worked hard to refine, especially the integration of our bone conduction microphones and the Multi-Point connection for seamless switching between your phone and laptop. We are also glad you're enjoying the "cozy" atmosphere provided by the Background Music feature in the Sony Sound Connect app! Our goal was to create a pair of earbuds that provide both industry-leading noise cancellation and a natural, ergonomic fit for long-term wear, and your feedback confirms we are on the right track.

We truly appreciate you being a loyal part of the Sony family.

    Excellent noise cancelation

I love wireless earbuds, bone conduction, open ear products, etc. It seems like they are always coming out with something just a little different and a lot better. Each style has it's benefits. Noise canceling are probably one of my favorites because they save my sanity at night. I pop them in and listen to my book or some brown noise until I fall asleep. They are excellent at blocking my husband's snoring. Set up was easy. I didn't have to read instructions like you used to have to do years ago. There is no fussing when you reconnect. It is all very seemless. There is an app to help set them up and personalize the sound. There are 4 sets of tips. You choose the size that fits best for you. The tip that makes for the snuggest fit typically gives you the best sound and the least outside noise. There are buttons on each earbud to control different aspects. Mine are a putty color, which I like. They come in a small case, about the size of a quarter of a bar of soap. My only complaint is that the edges of the case aren't rounded off. It makes it very awkward and uncomfortable to put it in the pocket of my leggings. The case is wirelessly chargeable. Thank you so much! I can just put the case on the underside of my wireless charging stand and not have to have an extra charging cord. The earbuds seem to hold a charge all day. I often wear just one throughout the day so I can hear what is going on around me. Then I switch to the other ear when my ear gets sore. I can do this several times then pop them in the charger when I go somewhere, rinse repeat and only have to recharge the case after a few days. Overall, I am impressed with these earbuds. They fit better than the previous versions of Sony earbuds I own.

The Sony WF-1000XM6 is the 5th generation ( Sony never made a WF-1000XM2 only the over ears version) of Sony’s flagship active noise canceling true wireless earbuds and these are the best yet in terms of ANC and sound quality. I’ve tried most generations of these except the XM4’s and these are by far the best in terms of looks and everything else. These are Matte plastic vs the glossy earbuds of the previous generation which I find easier to grip to get out of the case. The tech specs of these are basically the same as the previous ones like the buds are IPX4 rated, and 8 hours of battery life for the buds and 18 in the case. But these do have more mics for the ANC with 8 total now and a new processor for the ANC. These of course work with Sony’s connect app where you can adjust the settings like the equalizer, speak to chat, anc and etc. change the option to have LDAC or signal priority as well on Devices that support LDAC. The reason for three stars is while hardware these are fantastic for the MSRP of $329.99 these are quite expensive and while technically sound better than the previous generation isn’t worth the price hike nor an upgrade. The app is also quite ancient and still shows its roots as Sony’s older app. Could use refresh. Also could have updated to Bluetooth 6.0 and better battery life as well. At MSRP if you don’t have a pair of earbuds and want one these are pricy but great but if you have the previous generation or other top tier ANC buds and looking to switch I’ll wait for the inevitable discount.

      Hello Closingracer,

Thank you for considering Sony products.

We truly appreciate you taking the time to share such a detailed and technical breakdown of your experience with the WF-1000XM6. It is great to hear that the new matte finish, the increased microphone count, and our integrated processor are delivering the top-tier ANC and sound quality we strive for. As a long-time user who has followed our journey through almost every generation of the series, we truly value your continued loyalty to the Sony family.

However, we want to sincerely apologize that the overall value proposition didn’t quite hit the mark for you. We hear your frustration regarding the price point and the feeling that the jump in performance doesn't fully justify the upgrade from the previous generation. We also agree that our Sony Sound Connect app could benefit from a refresh to better match the modern hardware it supports, and we appreciate your candid feedback on the battery life and Bluetooth standards.

We aim to lead the industry, and your input on where we can improve—specifically regarding the app interface and battery stamina—is incredibly valuable to our development team.

      Best regards,
      -Fred Sony_US

I generally have not been a big fan on the move to true wireless ear buds - I want to be transparent that historically the worst kind of headphone for me. With that disclaimer laid out my key take away is that I was really impressed with these earbuds, they're by far the best ones that I've ever used and I will likely use them instead of my preferred open-ear sport buds that I use now. I frequently work off hours to connect with colleagues in Asia, Europe and west coast for my east coast job and so my biggest differentiators on headphones are call quality, noise cancellation and battery life. The Sony WF1000XM6 has a NOTICEABLE leg up over my current over-ear and other earbuds I've tried in the past with regards to call quality and noise cancelling: I can conduct morning zooms in my pre-school-drop-off kitchen without missing important context buried in a heavy accent. I also can meet with west coast leadership after work from the car or whatever the kid activity-du-jour is without background noise being distracting to me or my colleagues. The battery lasts long enough that I can do both of those in the same day. By the way, the music also sounds great: probably not quite as good as my higher end over-the-ear headphones but pretty dang good. I did have some problems with the earbuds falling out my ear but overall I felt they had a comfortable fit and were more secure than most in-ear products I've tried before. I will keep and use these frequently as my daily conference call set.

      Hi BostonBru,

We are thrilled to hear that the WF-1000XM6 converted you to true wireless earbuds! It’s fantastic that the noise canceling and call quality are helping you navigate global meetings and busy mornings alike. Regarding the fit, we recommend using the "Determines Optimal Earbud Tips" test in the Sony | Sound Connect app; trying a larger size or the "squeeze-and-rotate" insertion method can often provide that extra security needed to keep them perfectly in place.

      Thanks for choosing Sony.

Sony's newest generation of bluetooth buds is another knock out of the park for them. I'm a huge fan of just about every Sony audio product since I first bought the WF-1000XM4s, their ULT 10 Tower, and their HT-A5000 surround system, so I had very high expectations and was excited to get my hands on the new XM6s. I'm happy to report they are absolutely stellar. The sound quality is absolutely premium, 30mm drivers deliver HiFi sound with deep rich bass, all of which is enhanced with their new QN3e top of the line noise canceling technology that can be customized for different situations. The battery life is great, 8hrs of continuous use with ANC and its even longer if you just use it in standard mode, the case also provides another 16hrs of life and a quick 5min gives you 1hr. These are absolutely my #1 bluetooth buds out right now, I found myself lost in the sauce listening to music, but I would highly recommend you try these buds out with ANC on and Dolby Atmos white noise tracks for a way of relaxing and getting a break from the cacophony of external sounds. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone.

The Sony - WF1000XM6 Best Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds are good, but in my opinion, they are not great. Out of the box, both earbuds together worked great. I did have to of course, size them to my ear, like you would any other earbuds. They stayed in the ear, doing just the regular activity of walking and such throughout the house. Now, anything such as running, they instantly pop out. That is not even my biggest complaint, though. My biggest complaint about them is the fact that I have to have both of them in my ears in order for them to work at all. If I have just the left one in, which is usually the one I want in my ear on a regular basis, then it cuts in and out, and it starts and stops constantly. However, if I have them both in my ears, it works like a charm. Now, as for noise cancelling, it is okay at best. I can still hear pretty much everything around me, it’s just a lot quieter, very muffled in a sense. Not what I would expect from noise-cancelling earbuds. Especially considering my other earbuds completely block out the noise. So at best, these get a three star rating. The sound quality is good, the highs are decent, and so are the lows.

      Hello Rcroker,

Thank you for considering Sony products.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced with the fit, single-earbud connectivity, and noise-canceling performance of your WF-1000XM6 earbuds. We appreciate your detailed feedback regarding the sound quality, and we will certainly share your comments with our team to help us improve future products.

To help resolve these issues and improve your experience, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Optimize the Fit: Since the earbuds are slipping during high activity, we recommend trying a larger size of the included Noise Isolation Earbud Tips. A tighter seal is also essential for effective noise cancelling; if the seal isn't perfect, ambient noise will leak in.

Firmware Update to Version 1.5.0: Please install the latest software to enhance performance and functionality. Detailed instructions are available at the following link: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm6/software/00377141

For more detailed walkthroughs, we recommend following our official troubleshooting guide here: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/2985/v1/en/contents/F063_Troubleshooting.html

If the issues persist after these steps, we encourage you to contact our dedicated support team for further assistance and advanced troubleshooting. You can find all contact options and resources here: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact.

Super disappointed... recently picked up a pair of these to wear when not using my over the ear pair. Which by the way are Sony, and I love them. The in ear pair not so much. At first setup was seamless and easy. Pick a size for the tip and go, the soft tips included come in a small, medium and large. The medium was installed and thats a tip size i would typically use. Well the tips are not very soft. They seem to run a bit on the larger side. The small ended up sorta fitting. So for myself in a more active area they would fall out occasionally. The actual body of the earbud is also pretty bulky. Tap functions are kinda clunky as well. Sound quality while playing music is pretty good. With a few EQ adjustments in the app. They sounded great. Call volume and quality was decent, however the person on the other end could not hear me very well. The active noise canceling works well and is pretty seamless. But these just missed the mark for me. Sound quality is great, but the fit and finish just didnt work for me.

      Hi HeatherS,

We are sorry to hear that the fit and call quality of your new WF-1000XM6 earbuds didn't meet your expectations. To improve the fit and ensure they stay secure during activity, we recommend using the "Determining the Optimal Earbud Tips" feature in the Sony | Sound Connect app, which helps you find the best seal among the included sizes. Regarding the call quality, please ensure the earbuds are running the latest firmware via the app, as we frequently release updates to optimize microphone performance and noise suppression.

      Thanks for choosing Sony.
