There's Some Truly Neat Technology in These Things

Let me start the review by saying that I’m not exactly what one would call “in shape” (aside from round being a shape). Part of the reason I picked these headphones was because I was hoping that it would provide incentive for me to start working out. I can say that I’ve started working out more, but I’m not 100% that these are the exclusive reason. I really can’t get started with the review without mentioning what I think is the hottest feature of these headphones. They come with three audio modes: noise cancelling, ambient sound, and ‘nothing.’ The first and the last should be pretty obvious, but my favorite feature of these is the ambient sound mode. What is it? By their very nature, in-ear headphones have a certain noise isolation to them - which is great, until you’re outside running on roads with cars and the like. That’s where the ambient sound mode comes in; when set to this, the Sony Sport headphones act almost as if hearing aids by letting *some* audio through. Not all of it, but enough that you can tell there is a potential danger coming up. Honestly, it’s difficult to tell the value of it until you take them outside; at which point, the mode becomes both “amazing” and the logic behind it “amazingly logical.” On to the other things I liked about them: The build quality does seem thought out. The case acts as both the charger and as a paring point for them via NFC. They seem to fit a bit weirdly in the case with the little plastic bit that sits in your concha (the little divot right above the ear canal) - it only fits weird because you can’t see the top edge of the case. Overall, a very nice case. In terms of how well they fit overall, I’d say that they sit well enough to wear for a full workout and not much more. They aren’t necessarily ‘heavy,’ but I did find my ears getting sore after a short while - I’d chalk this up to not really using in-ear headphones all that often and the discomfort would probably diminish with use. As for battery use, I’d say that they should comfortably last for most workouts with ease. By putting them back in the case right after using, I never had a problem with them not being ready to use when I was ready as they were always at 100%. Which brings us to the things that I don’t like: While they charge from the case that they sit in, the case really doesn’t tell you how much battery it has left to use. The indicator on the back is the only way to glean any information from it, and that is only used for indicating that the case is charging from a power source. This lack of information display is made worse by the fact that the easiest way to shut them off is by putting them into the case. This tells them to start charging and to turn off. What can (and what did) happen was that I put the headphones away and they, not having any power present, kept playing until I turned them off manually. Missing this, you can easily experience a time when your headphones are dead and you don’t know why. Using the headphones, there were two things that I missed. The first was the lack of volume controls. All volume control relies on the device that is playing the audio. Not a major deal breaker, but still a disappointment. Audio for music is very good given their purpose. The audio for phone calls though is just acceptable - they go monaural to the left headset and get locked in whatever audio mode the call was started in as all buttons act as call termination buttons. Finally, the audio range seems a bit short for Bluetooth. Admittedly, I can’t ask for much given that they are each less than 1” long, but they get funky when they start to get out of range. As with any device, they start to skip over the audio. Only given that they are not wired to each other, they get out of sync both between the playback device and each other; almost like someone is playing with the balance controls on a radio. It’s neat to experience once, but somewhat annoying when you’re using them for non-workout related activities. Finally, the one thing that I didn’t like but really can’t blame Sony for would be the fact that there’s no way to mute out every single footfall that you get from in-ear headphones. It’s easy enough to ignore after a few minutes, just something to be cognizant of. Overall, I like these. They have a few quirks that I’m not 100% in love with, but given what I’ve used before for workout headphones, they’re amazing.
