Today I am reviewing the Sony WF-SP800N in-ear sport headphones. In my testing, I used them with various music genres using Apple Music as the source on both my iPhone and my MacBook Pro. Fit: The earphones are called in-ear, but they are more of a floating earbud. The earpiece goes into the ear canal, but a plastic circular piece actually supports the main part of the headphone which is where the weight is. To me, the end result is the most comfortable earbud I have ever worn. Quality: The headphones are very well made. They are sturdy and the plastic pieces are strong yet flexible. They are IP55 rated which means that sweat and dirt will not damage them and you can even rinse them off in a non-spraying faucet. Just don’t use a spray nozzle, those require IP56 or higher to handle that. The charging case is well built, easy to open, yet the door stays closed until you want to open it. Battery time seems to be around 8 hours after a complete charge, but I didn’t time it. Charging/pairing: I started by charging them in the case. Charging took less than 2 hours on the first charge and lasted all day. Once charged, I went to pair them with my iPhone 11. As soon as I took them out of the case and put them in my ear, they were ready to pair. The pairing process was just as easy with my MacBook Pro. App: For the phones, there is an app called Sony Headphones Connect. This app allows for complete control of the headphones. It has an adaptive Sound Control that detects your actions and adjusts the headphones accordingly. It also has ambient sound control, noise-canceling, 360 Reality audio (with the appropriate service), and equalization. The equalizer had a set of preset selections with the ability to manually set it and to save 2 custom settings. It is a very feature-rich app for a feature-rich headphone. Sound quality: For the sound quality review, it is important to remember that there are not audiophile-level music-listening headphones. These are sport/action headphones and I reviewed them as such. At first, I wasn’t happy with the sound of these headphones. Everything sounded flat and dead. When I went into the app, I found the equalizer and started using it. I discovered that these headphones require using the equalizer to tailor the sound to the genre to get the best sound out of them. I started with easy listening. I recently stumbled across Philip Glass and love his Metamorphosis album. With these headphones, the music was clear and open. The sound quality was much better than I expected. When I switched over to Randy Newman, I had a harder time dialing in the music. It seemed I could capture his voice or his piano, but not both. Not really surprising for a sport headphone. For these, I started with the mellow setting and adjusted the eq as needed. I switched over to metal and had to set up a custom eq to get a good sound. Once I got it, the music sounded good and the bass punchy across most bands. Metallica sounded the best with the Bass Boost setting while others with a custom setting. Where these headphones really shined was playing high-energy music that I listen to when working out. I do not like working out; matter of fact, I hate it. But I like the results. So, I use high energy music to help keep me going. For this playlist, I set the eq to “Excited” mode. The highs were really crisp, the mids good, and the bass full of punch. I played 20+ songs from George Clinton, B-52s, The Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Art of Noise, and others. Across the board, these songs sounded clear, crisp highs, decent mids, and tight bass. Conclusion: The Sony WF-SP800N sport headphones are well made, good sounding headphones. They are the most comfortable in-ear headphones I have ever worn. I would easily rate it a 5 out of 5 if it wasn’t for the fact that to get the best sound out of them, you really need to stay on top of the equalizer. That being said, for my work out on a noisy elliptical, the noise cancellation worked beautifully, the sound was loud and clear, and the headphones almost disappeared because of the comfort and not being completely in my ear. I recommend these headphones.

These are very good earbuds with a better than acceptable level. Quality of sound is high but size of them makes them quite a challange to hold them for some sports. If you don't have a high active physical requirement these might fit well for you. I've tested at least a dozen of these devices and I'll personally rank them on #5.

      Hi HenryVIII,

We're glad that you like the sound quality of the headphones. Your feedback about its size and fit is greatly appreciated. For optimum fit and comfort, make sure that you are wearing the headphones properly. Put the unit with the (left) mark on your left ear and the unit with the (right) mark on your right ear. The left unit has a tactile dot. Twist the headset to secure the arc supporter to your ear grooves. Hint: The earbud will be easier to slide deep into your ear if you pull up on the top of the ear lightly while twisting the headset.

M-sized arc supporters come attached to the left and right units of the headset at the time of purchase. When the headset is worn following the procedures described above and you feel the arc supporters are too small, replace them with the size L arc supporters.

I was in love with these earphones at the beginning. They start on when running and last a long time. However, they are very sensitive if my hair touches the ear bud they disconnect or active sometime. Also they will randomly disconnect and you have to reconnect the device to your phone. I would much rather go with the air pods.
