I didn’t think much of it since I was still getting a decent run time. A little past the year mark one ear bud is pretty much useless due to battery drain. From a full charge it runs dry and powers down in about 5 minutes or less. Other side lasts maybe 30 minutes with all settings set to conserve battery charge. No where near how they performed out of the box. For the price I wouldn’t expect such horrible battery deterioration. A quick google search shows this apparently is a very common issue with this model. So disappointed, thought buying big brand Sony was a safe bet. BUYER BEWARE!

Interestingly, no matter what type of eartips i used these babies killed my ear canals! Even after a good college try of 2 weeks use, every day, i could not get past 30 minutes at best (trying all different size foam ans silicone eartips. If they were comfortable for my ears i would have kept instead of returning.

Allow us to help and turn your experience around. Ear canals vary in size from person to person, and can also vary in size from the left to the right sides. After selecting the right size earbud tips, we also recommend wearing the earbuds properly.
Gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal.

The only issue is that I use them with a portable Hires player and I haven't figured out how to control the earbud internal volume without connecting to my phone.

You need to download the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app on your smartphone to assign Volume adjustment function to the touch sensor.

A lot smaller than the previous model with a better fit. Noise cancelling is incredible! I drive a loud truck for work and the Sony's kill most of the external noise. What is horrible is when you use them to talk to someone on your phone. The person on the other end says its muffled and hard to understand. So spending over 300.00 to just listen to music. You may want to get some other earbuds. If you want ear buds to be able to talk find another.

It is really annoying. If you want to test your headset. Just ANC ON, turn off the music then bite your teeth. You may hear ping noise.

Thank you for your review. While we are pleased you are satisfied with the exceptional sound quality and industry-leading noise canceling function of our WF-1000XM4, we are so sorry you are encountering noise issues with the left earbud.
To eliminate the pinging sound you should:
1. Turn off Adaptive Sound Control, or 2. Turn off “Notification Tone When Switching”
When the Adaptive Sound Control function is turned on, the headset detects the wearer's actions and adjusts the noise canceling function automatically. When this setting is changed, music may pause momentarily and an alert sound may be heard. This sound notifies you that the setting has been changed. If you want to deactivate this notification sound, use the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app to turn the setting off.

You may try following the below steps if the noise canceling effect is not sufficient.
Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on.
If the size of the earbud tips does not match the size of your ear canals or the headset is not properly worn on your ears, tap operations or the speech detection of Speak-to-Chat may not be successful, or you may not obtain proper sound qualities, noise canceling effects, or call performances. If any of this is the case, try the following.
- Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The size of the left and right earbud tips may be different. The “Sony | Headphones Connect” app will help you to determine which earbud tips are most suitable for you to achieve the optimal noise cancellation effect.
- Check if the headset is properly worn on your ears. Wear the headset so that the earbud tip is comfortably situated as deep in the ear canal as possible.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions. To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.
Resetting and initializing the headphones is also a recommendation. Please refer to this link on how to reset or initialize the WF-1000XM4 earbud headphones.

My favorite buds so far

I have apple airbuds, air bud +, samsung galaxy buds, live, plus, pro, Jabra 75t and active 75t. These Sony are the best of them, but pricey at $280.
