Poor sound quality

We recommend having them updated with the latest firmware version using the Sony Headphones Connect app to fine-tune your music. In this Application, there is an equalizer that can be used to tailor the sound to your liking.

Great but not amazing

Great noise cancellation which helps improve the sound but I wanted an amazing sound quality if I was gonna spend $250+ on earphones and these didn’t sound amazing. They were very good, but not $250+ amazing. The earpiece was quite bulky looking in my ear, and I had a hard time getting them out of the case each time bc the magnet was so strong and there’s good way to really grab them. The memory foam like ear cushions made the sound better, and in the app, I could mess with the equalizer thing but nothing was labeled so I had to look online at others suggestions of where they had theirs set to. The bass increased didn’t really sound like it increased the bass, and I’d have to change the equalizer settings for different songs to get the best quality I could. They connected to my iPhone within seconds, they were quite comfortable as well. Something I didn’t like was that if you took one earbud out, the music stopped. I was told that there was a setting that would stop that, but I looked and never found it.

The earbuds may not only work as designed if they are not worn properly, or the size of the earbud tips you will be using doesn't match the size of your ear canals. You can measure the air-tightness of the earbud tips using the Determines Optimal Earbud Tips function in the Headphones Connect app. This helps maximize the noise canceling function and sound quality for music and calls. And as part of the normal operation of the headphones, when you listen to music while wearing both headset units in your ears, the headset will pause music playback if one or both headset units are removed. When the headset is worn again, the headset resumes music playback.

The WF-1000XM4 comes with different sizes of earbuds to ensure there is a great fit for all ear sizes and an optimal noise canceling experience. As a suggestion, try to use the right size according to the size of your ears. When wearing them, please gently pull on the top of your ear as you twist the earbud into your ear. For the Bass sound, these headphones feature an equalizer through the Sony Headphones Connect app that can be adjusted to suit the music.

Silent serenity coupled with sonic bliss

They are easily my new favorite headphones. The packaging was the first thing I noticed about the Sony WF-1000XM4. It feels like some kind of paper composite; whether it’s recyclable I don’t know, but it made a good impression. It’s a refreshing switch from the plastic that permeates retail packaging nowadays. Pairing them with my phone was easy as taking the headphones from the case. Upon removing them for the first time, they enter pairing mode. Open your phone’s Bluetooth menu and select WF-1000XM4. Done! The headphones come with tips in three sizes. Medium tips are attached, and the box contains replacement tips in small and large sizes. Finding the correct fit to your ears is critical for optimum noise canceling and sound quality; the choice of interchangeable tips made it easy. They are secured in the ear with a gentle twist. There is a convenient tool in the Sony Headphones app that confirms you have achieved the right fit and seal. The ear tip material reminds me of a memory foam, but it’s made of a material that holds the inside of the ear comfortably and securely. I wore them for a couple of hours during initial use, and they were quite comfortable. I have no concerns about them falling out while I’m active. Speaking of active, the WF-1000XM4 have an IPX4 water resistance rating and they should be unaffected by sweat or the occasional splash. Noise cancellation: The Sony WF-1000XM4 just blew me away. I regularly use other noise canceling headphones, both wired and wireless, and they each have their strengths and shortcomings. The WF-1000XM4 noise canceling performance is, hands down, the best I have experienced among my wireless options and darn near as good as the wired option I have available. Outside distractions are essentially nonexistent. The WF-1000XM4 have a very cool feature. It’s called Speak-to-Chat, and it does exactly what the name suggests. Want to have a conversation with someone while you’re listening to something? No problem. Simply talk. Your voice activates the Speak-to-Chat function which pauses what you’re listening to, and microphones bring in ambient sounds so that you can have a normal conversation. When you have stopped talking, playback resumes. It is such an effective commonsense solution. I can’t believe I haven’t experienced it before. And if you like to sing along while you listen, the Speak-to-Chat functionality can be disabled from within the Headphones app. Sound quality: This is where the WF-1000XM4 really shine. Sound this satisfying is unexpected from headphones this small, light and comfortable. The sound is somehow everything it needs to be, exactly when it needs to be. They can produce head rattling bass and reach lows that just shouldn’t come from a package this elegant. Even at full volume, the music sounds clear. Nothing is overdriven or muddied. At the same time, they are capable of subtlety that allows you to discern individual instruments in a symphony orchestra. My music tastes are varied, and my playlists include just about anything. ‘40s big bands, rap, country, heavy metal, soul, disco, R&B. No matter what I throw at the Sony WF-1000XM4, it sounds better than it ever has. I really can’t overstate how great these headphones sound. In many cases, it’s like I’m hearing recordings for the first time again. I love these headphones! If you’re familiar with the idea that a sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, you might get where I’m coming from. Magic? Probably not. But, just the same, I had to experience it to believe it.

Sony Buds -- one of the best on the market

It's very easy to switch from noise cancelling to ambient sound. I use these every day for multiple hours a day. No issues with battery life. The audio quality for calls and music are also excellent. I would buy these again and recommend to a friend if they were in search for a pair of wireless ear buds.

ADVICE FOR GETTING THE BEST FIT!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.ADVICE: When I first used these earbuds, I didn’t like how they fit and I notice most negative reviews are because of the fit. Then, I read the instructions showing how to insert them into your ears. When you put them in, use a twisting motion (back and forth) about 3 or 4 times as you push them further in. Then, lightly hold them in place for a few seconds so the ear tip can expand in your ear canal. You may find they fit exceptionally well, won’t fall out even when out walking, and have a perfect seal to get the best sound. These are now my favorites.

• If you feel earbud tips are difficult to put into your ears, change the size of earbud tips or squeeze earbud tips lightly before wearing the headset.
• Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The size of the left and right earbud tips may be different.

You can make few adjustments to your headphones settings to suit your needs through the Sony Headphones Connect app. It has an Equalizer setting which can be customized to fine-tune your music. This will give you more control over your headphones and their performance.

Very good, not great. Battery life is misleading
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, after a slight tweak in EQ settings, these simply sound great -- no question about that. But, they are not the ground-breaking magical sound machines that I expected based on many reviews. The biggest disappointment was misleading battery life... ANC: Really good. But again, some reviewers claim the world around them disappears and that's just not true for me. Most mid/upper-range sounds are still there, just much softer. I often walk along a 2-lane road and I'm never unaware of cars near me. I still hear birds. Connection: After initial pairing, connection to my Android phone using BT 5.2 is instantaneous. I've had only one flaky connection and a disconnect/reconnect solved it. Sound: I'm not an audiophile, but these sound wonderful. I did tweak the EQ by selecting the 'Bright' preset + 3 points of 'Clear Bass'. Perfect for me. Build Quality: Solid all around. Buds are lighter than I expected but flawless. The case lid seems to be balanced to fall closed and it does so between removing the first and second bud. Noticeable, but not a real issue. Wireless charging works fine. Features/Battery Life: I'm combining these two areas because they are so interconnected. There are many great features in the app: Adaptive sound, wind noise reduction, Speak-to-Chat, sound quality/connection priority, Google Asst integration, EQ, ambient sound level, and on and on... BUT! Each of these features require processing power that can/will GREATLY reduce battery life. With ANC, Speak-to-Chat, wind noise reduction, Google Asst, and adaptive sound enabled, I was getting about 3-4 hrs playing time from the RIGHT earbud (with about 30% still showing on L bud). I assume the R bud does the brain work for both sides. That's about half of what SONY claims. So, SONY gives us (charges for) many great features but then quotes battery life without any (except ANC) being enabled. That's a little disingenuous. You can have great battery life or lots of convenient features, but not at the same time. To be fair, I'm sure all brands use 'best case' and not 'real world' in playing time claims. Corporate marketing... a.k.a., gaslighting. Bottom Line: This is a tough call. I love the sound of these and I don't need the $250 for food or rent. So, I'm keeping them even with the janky battery life. Your choice depends on your priorities. If you just want great sound/ANC, I'm sure you would be happy with one of the other top options that cost much less. IMO, the ANC is just not the magical next level advance I've read about in many reviews. Because of the high cost to overall performance ratio here, I can't recommend these for MOST people. Buy them only if spending $250 for great sounding earbuds doesn't matter to you.
