      Hi Mars,

We're so sorry to hear you are having issues with your WF-1000XM4 Truly Wireless Noise-Canceling Earbuds, particularly with sound quality and fit. Please allow us to help you and turn this into a better experience. Make sure to update the firmware of the headphones by performing a software update (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. Doing so may resolve the issue.
      https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm4/downloads

Integrated Processor V1 enables a far longer battery life of up to 8 hours, with noise cancellation on, without charging. And just 5 minutes of quick charge gives you up to an hour of playback. We recommend to use the supplied USB Type-C cable and a commercially available USB AC adaptor capable of supplying an output current of 0.5 A (500 mA) or more.

If the size of the earbud tips does not match the size of your ear canals or the headset is not properly worn on your ears, you may not obtain proper sound qualities, noise canceling effects, or call performances. If any of this is the case, try the following.

      • Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The size of the left and right earbud tips may be different.
The “Sony | Headphones Connect” app will help you to determine which earbud tips are most suitable for you to achieve the optimal noise cancellation effect.
      • Check if the headset is properly worn on your ears. Wear the headset so that the earbud tip is comfortably situated as deep in the ear canal as possible.
      • To get the sound that you prefer, please try the different sound modes found in the Sony Headphones Connect app. The WF-1000XM4 also have the ability to adjust the equalizer in the App to preset settings or save your own custom equalizer settings.

To isolate and hopefully resolve the poor sound quality issues, refer to this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wf1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP1000239083.html

      Hi Cas15,

We regret to know that you're not having the best experience with your WF-1000XM4 and you are having issues, particularly with the fit of the unit.

For fit concern, the WF-1000XM4 features a new ergonomic surface design for a more stable fit and the newly developed Noise Isolation Earbud Tips also improves adhesion to the ear canal for a more stable fit, making the WF-1000XM4 headphones easy to wear.

To ensure optimal performance, as well as to obtain the best fit and prevent the headset from falling out, change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. If you feel earbud tips are difficult to put into your ears, change the size of earbud tips or squeeze earbud tips lightly before wearing the headset. When wearing them, gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal.

Please make sure to follow the guide from this link: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm4/articles/00262839

We do have some good information on how to properly fit and wear WF-1000XM4 on this instructional video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDt_BSjBT-I

Hi Jayb, we are sorry if the noise canceling functions did not meet your expectations. This is definitely not the experience we wanted you to have with our products. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn your experience around.

The noise canceling function generates antiphase sound against outside surrounding noises (such as noises in vehicles or noises from air conditioners indoors) to cancel out surrounding noises. Please try the following recommendations if the effect of noise canceling is not sufficient.

I have used several types of headphones in the past, from corded to Beats to Air buds and then there are the Bose wireless which I disliked. These are similar in shape to Bose, however, they use an intuitive app to perform the set up going as far as taking actual pictures of each ear for proper fit analysis and adapting to a thing called 360 sound which is a new concept and I am sure you will hear more and more about this. These are entirely wireless and don't include any buttons or sync to bluetooth options, once you remove them from their handy small case, they give you the option to sync and then you adjust them to fit inside the ears. They are a bit bulky and it took a bit to get them inside the ears with a twist and it reminded me of the nightmare Bose debacle headphones I returned. The sound is pretty cool and the app gives you tons of options and this adjusts automatically to ambient sound. You do have to tap on one of the to get noise cancelling to kick on, sound is pretty decent, although at times I felt like these were going to fall out of my ears if I started any type of workout. Good news they are water resistant to a certain extent. The feel of these, they werent heavy but felt a little cheap like total plastic and I am not sure I could ever get used to the way they fit in the ears as they kind of hang outside the ear a bit. However I did like the sound settings and the app was pretty cool. You can even sync it to a trial of 360 music services which is I guess the newer types of services providing 360 degree sound. In the end, not sure I would buy these myself, glad I was able to test them, Sony is a solid company for TVs but not sure they have the head phones market nailed down as of yes and unsure they will ever be able to compete with Apple.

Hi kino, we are sorry to hear that these headphones started to hurt after long hours of wearing them. This is definitely not the experience we wanted you to have.

You may be experiencing a symptom called listener fatigue. That is where your eardrums work hard to manage the volume that flows through your ear canal. The louder the volume, the bigger the strain on your eardrums, which then causes the feeling of fatigue. Lowering the volume or take a break from wearing them for a while helps fix this issue.

      Ref: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm4/articles/00015243

In addition, our WF100XM4 are supplied with different sizes of earbud tips so that you can achieve the maximum effects of the earbuds. In designing these headphones, we also consider the ear canals sizes as it varies from person to person, and can also vary in size from the left to the right sides. To keep the headphones for comfortable listening experience, we recommend selecting the right size earbud tips and wearing the earbuds properly.
Gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal.

Hi Snyder, we are sorry to hear that the headphones won't charge after a month of use. This is definitely not the experience we want you to have. we'd love to help you and turn this into a better experience.

If your Bluetooth® headset will not accept a charge, the battery may need to be replaced or there may be a loose connection. Try the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:
      Reference: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wf1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP1000239145.html

Make sure that the headset is set into the charging case securely.
Be sure to use the supplied USB Type-C cable. Check that the USB Type-C cable is firmly connected to the charging case and the USB AC adaptor or computer, or the USB AC adaptor is firmly connected to the AC outlet.
Check that the computer is turned on. Wake the computer up if the computer is in standby (sleep) or hibernation mode.
When using Windows 8.1, update using Windows Update.
If the earbud tips are not properly attached to the headset, the headset may not charge with the supplied charging case.
Check that the earbud tips are attached properly when you store the headset in the charging case.
If earbud tips by other manufacturers are used, the headset may not charge with the supplied charging case. Be sure to use the supplied earbud tips when charging.
When the charging ports of the headset or the charging case get dirty, the headset may not charge. Clean the charging ports with a soft dry cloth.
It is recommended to charge in a place with an ambient temperature between 15 °C and 35 °C (59 °F - 95 °F). Efficient charging may not be possible beyond this range.
While charging, be sure to keep the lid of the charging case closed to prevent the battery of the charging case from being wasted.
When charging wirelessly, charging may slow down or stop if the charging case becomes misaligned with the wireless charging pad.
When charging wirelessly, charging may slow down or stop at high or low temperatures depending on the wireless charging pad used.
      Reset the headset.
Initialize the headset, and pair the headset and the device again.
Please ensure that the headphones firmware is updated to version 1.2.6. Updating the firmware improves headphones functionality.

These earbuds are impressive on so many fronts. These are the first earbuds I've had that are balanced across the entire sound spectrum, great highs and mids plus the best lows I've heard in an earbud. These sound great whether listening to an ordinary MP3, HD or UHD track. The Sony 360 Reality Audio has some truly amazing sounds through these. The noise cancelling works well. There is a feature by the noise cancelling control that allows outside (ambient) sounds to be let in in varying amounts so that you can hear what's going on around you in addition to your music. These also have a Speak To Chat function, that I have not seen before, which turns the music way down and the outside sound way up when you speak allowing you to have a conversation without removing the earbuds, way cool! If you remove one or both earbuds the music is paused at the source. The app is easily installed and finds/controls the music on my phone. These earbuds sound great on both ends of a phone call. There is currently a coupon for a trial of one of several services that offer HD, UHD, Dolby Atmos and 3D Reality Audio tracks. These are the best I have encountered!

Almost Perfect, But Still Needs A Few Features

    Posted .

I really do enjoy these headphones. The sound quality is wonderful and the noise cancellation is one of the best for earbuds. The battery life lets me use these all day at work which is impressive. These are almost perfect, but still lacking an important feature IMO. Pros: Great sound quality. Top notch noise cancellation. Good battery life. Wireless charging case is a bonus. Cons: Ear tips wear out quickly. The ear tips can become uncomfortable over time due to the nature of the tips expanding and putting pressure on the inner ear. Only connects to one device at a time. Overall, I enjoy these earbuds. If I could go back and pick again, I'd still choose to purchase these. I did end up replacing the eartips with 3rd-party ones which reduced the noise cancellation, but did improve on the comfort and durability for me. Everyone's ears are different, so take this with a grain of salt. The main con is that it does not have multi-device pairing. I really wish I could connect these to my desk phone and my cellphone at work so I can listen to music and still be ready to take calls when needed.

Hi Matt, We're glad that you are enjoying the sound quality, noise canceling function, and battery life. We're also sorry if the WF-1000XM4 does currently not support Multi-point Connection. It can be PAIRED with multiple devices at the same time, but unlike model WH-1000XM4: it cannot be CONNECTED with multiple devices at the same time.

We designed these headphones to provide incredible audio performance and take noise cancellation to the next level. You can enjoy crystal clear call quality, even in noisy environments and our speak-to-chat technology automatically reduces volume during conversation. Plus, you can get 8 hour long battery with noise canceling, IPX4 water resistance and easy wireless charging. Thank you for choosing Sony! Erin Sony_US

Great audio and noise cancelling. The memory foam tips took some getting used to, and because of the noise cancelling/airtight fit it can sound weird to eat or talk with these in at first. Case loses battery life faster than I would have hoped as well. Love them though, would buy again. Pairing was super easy.

Debating on these vs Airpod Pros?

Hi! First off I want to start by saying I normally don't write reviews ever, but I was compelled to help out any future purchasers, like I once was. I was on the fence on these Sony WF-1000XM4 and the Airpod Pros, and I was super unsure which one of which to get. So what did I do? I bought both of them! Lol. I really liked how easy the Airpods were to put in my ears and how compatible they were with my iPhone. BUT! There was something missing. I'm into music and I need REALLY good sound. I felt the Airpods did just "ok", but not enough - they seemed to have a basic flat sound to them :( These WF-1000XM4's have AMAZING sound quality, and the app is the best earbud app I've ever used. You can change so much for the earbuds and make it your own, including various ways to customize the EQ. The earbuds automatically detect when you're stationary, moving, or when you're in a noisy environment, and will change to ANC or Hear-through for you! Not to mention the ANC is the best, I can literally hear nothing outside when it's on. Compared to Airpods, where I can still hear outside noise. Not only that, but it supports 360 Audio, which is the most AMAZING thing I've ever heard in my life. I also like how these earbuds require a small tap to the side of them, to change the controls, such as pause, skip, etc.. The earbuds that I've had in the past required a clicky button that was hard to press, or none at all. So I loved this feature as well. The best part about these is that the battery lasts so long! The Airpods and previous earbuds I've had only last 4-5 hours at that and then I have to put them back in. These WF-1000XM4 last about 8 hours with ANC off and a little over 5-6 hours with ANC on. This was a huge winner for me because I'm busy during the day. I think the thing I was unsure about was how large these earbuds are, but once I found the right eartip size for me, they fit super snug in my ear, nestled into place, and didn't fall out while heavily exercising, so it worked out beautiful. I would HIGHLY suggest these earbuds and definitely give them a try. These are the most expensive earbuds I've bought, but I feel the technology and high quality of them make it the best purchase I've ever made for myself :)

These headphones were great for listening to music and podcasts and blocking out noise. However, they are not great for talking on the phone. The listener on the other end has trouble hearing someone using these headphones. There was a lot of background noise, making it difficult to understand.

Hi user4850, Thanks for your feedback and insights. Sony values the opinions of customers and is always striving to provide the best experience possible.

The WF-1000X4 has a superior call quality than our previous model. Precise Voice Pickup Technology uses beamforming microphones and a bone-conduction sensor to allow the WF-1000XM4 headphones to pick up your voice clearly and accurately for hands-free calls—at home, in a cafe, or wherever you are.

If you're having an issue while on call, please ensure you have the latest software installed. The software version can be updated using the Headphones Connect App. In addition, restarting or Initializing the headphones.

Today I am reviewing the Sony WF-1000XM4 in-ear stereo headphones. In my testing, I used them with various music genres using Apple Music as the source on both my Samsung A21 cell phone and my MacBook Pro. First Impression: The packaging is really good. They packed a large amount of stuff in a small package. It comes with 3 sets of ear buds, small, medium, and large. It also comes with a USB C charging cable, a reference guide, a cleaning guide, and warranty guide. Opening the case reveals the ear headphones. Both the case and the headphones seem to be very well made. The case and LED are attractive, and the headphones are attractive and has a solid feel. Fit: The earphones are in-ear headphones and use the ear bud and ear shape to help hold them in place. Once you get the correct ear buds on, you push the headphone into the ear canal and twist forward. The headphone sat perfectly in my ear. I have quite a few of these and only one of them fits my ear without a hook, and it’s pretty heavy. This headphone feels like it was custom fit to my ear. Quality: These headphones are very well made. The plastic is solid and does not feel flimsy. The ear buds are well connected to the headphone. The charging case is also very solid. The door opens easily but stays closed when not in use. The headphones sit in the charging case with no play and with strong magnets. App: For the phones, there is an app called Sony Headphones. This app controls the binding, registration, setup, and control of the headphones. This app made setup as easy as I have ever seen. Some of the features I skipped, such as 360 music because I don’t have an account. When skipping a feature, the app continues to the next step without any problems or hiccups. All skipped setups can be configured later in the app. It has an adaptive Sound Control that detects your actions and adjusts the headphones accordingly. It also has ambient sound control, noise canceling, 360 Reality audio (with the appropriate service), and equalization. The equalizer had a set of 11 preset settings with the ability to manually set it and to save 2 custom settings. I used every preset eq while testing and each one does a good job for its intended type of music. I created a custom setting just to see it work, but most of my listening was in presets. This app also monitors each headphone and gives constantly updated status on battery level, eq setting, adaptive sound control status, and the music playing and the ability to rewind, play, pause, and ff. This is one of the smoothest, best looking, and feature rich headphone app I have ever used. Sound quality: For the sound quality review, I spent two days listening to a full range of artists that covered most genres. I started each artist with the audio at a good listening level and the EQ in the off position. Right from the very beginning, I realized that these headphones are far better sounding than any in-ear headphone I have ever heard. They performed at an audiophile level across all genres. Some music didn’t sound as good as others, but it wasn’t the ability of the headphones, but the quality of the source. Usually, I take you through each genre with how the headphones responded in each one. There is no need to do this with the Sony WX1000XM4’s. The headphones produced full range with crisp highs, full mids, and tight, deep bass in every genre. I have no idea how they achieved the quality of the bass in such a small headphone, but they did. On some of the older songs, I changed the EQ from Off to Bass Boost. That is the same flat setting as the Off setting with the addition of some bass. That helped the older songs with lower quality sources liven right up. For the review, I listened to AC/DC (Both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson), Alice in Chains, Andy Mineo, Anthrax, The B-52’s, Bananarama, Beastie Boys, Beck, Black Eyed Peas, Black Knight, Booker T & the M.G.’s, Cake, Chubb Rock, The Clash, Concrete Blonde, The Cranberries, The Cure, Cypress Hill, Dave Grusin, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode, Digital Underground, Dire Straits, Efrem Bergman, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Faith No More, The Fixx, A Flock of Seagulls, For King & Country, The Gap Band, Generation X, Gideon, Gorillaz, Grandpa Jones, Great White, Herman’s Hermits, Hillsong, Iron Butterfly, JFA, Joe Walsh, Lauren Daigle, LL Cool J, MAKJ & Timmy Trumpet, Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, Nirvana, No Doubt, Officer Negative, The Offspring, Parliament, Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Pink Floyd, Queen, Randy Newman, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush, The Shangri-Las, Simon & Garfunkel, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Steely Dan, String Bean, The Suicidal Tendencies, Tami Neilson, Trip Lee, The Vandals, The White Strips, Wild Cherry, Yaz, Yello, ZZ Top, 4 Non Blondes, and 116. As you can see, I covered just about all genres and played a lot of different music in each one. In all areas, these headphones performed beautifully. The only genre I would like to discuss is the mellow, acoustic or folk styled songs. I played a lot of early Dire Straits, Tami Neilson, Mel Parsons, Emily Barker, Randy Newman, 4 Non-Blondes, The Cranberries and the like. Listening to these artists really showed why the Sony WF1000XM4’s are a step above the rest. The clarity of the guitars and the voices were amazing. It sounded as if I was sitting right in front of them as they played. I even heard imaging as I listened. Conclusion: The Sony WF-1000XM4 in-ear headphones are well made, good looking headphones. They are the most comfortable in-ear headphones I have ever worn, easily twice as comfortable as the next best. The app is the most functional app I have used so far, as it makes initial setup, registration, and complete configuration the easiest I have experienced, and then provides complete control and status while being used. You don’t have to use the app to use the headphones, but they make the experience even better. The audiophile-quality sound is the headphones best feature. I have finally found an in-ear headphone that I like. They are very comfortable, and the sound is on par with my reference system consisting of McIntosh, Rega, and B&W. In my review, they hit 5 out of 5 in every possible category. They are an absolute pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend these headphones.
