Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I finally splurged and bought a set of the WF-XM4 because just about every YouTube and website reviewer said the ANC was the best among earbuds. One of them even categorized them as having "god tier" ANC. Nope! Not the top notch ANC I expected. In fact it's maybe slightly less powerful than Sony's cheaper LinkBuds S. For reference I have these other ANC-equipped earbuds I'll be mentioning: Sony LinkBuds S Technics EAH-AZ70W I couldn't believe that these very expensive and lauded Sony earbuds didn't even match the ANC strength of my LinkBuds S. And my Technics earbuds have better and stronger noise cancelling. I turn on the TV and start watching a YouTube video. I pause the music that I'm listening to with these XM4. With the XM4 still sealed in my ears, I can clearly hear the guy in the YouTube video talking through the TV speakers. I look in the Sony Headphones app and make sure ANC is on and at its strongest level. It is. I pause the video, change earbuds to my Technics and unpause the video. Wow! Much better and stronger ANC! The guy talking in the video is much more muffled. The Sony XM4 aren't even close to the Technics for ANC strength. The ANC with these Technics isn't absolutely quiet, but it is quieter than the Sony XM4. This confirmed to me what I was experiencing with these XM4 a day ago while driving around in my car as well as strolling the isles of the grocery store. They didn't muffle the ambient sound around me as well as I was accustomed to with my Technics earbuds. I'm blown away. I'm having a hard time grasping how wrong ALL of the reviews I've read or watched about these Sony XM4 earbuds are. Audio sound quality, though, seems to be really good, but not really any better than my Technics. Granted, sound quality is purely subjective because everyone hears differently, and others may hear a much better or worse sound from these XM4 than I do, but the ANC isn't as subjective as sound quality. They either make ambient noise quieter or they don't. And these Sony XM4 do not make ambient noise quieter than my Technics.

Great earbuds, low battery lifespan

Ive had them for nearly a year now. Sadly within the last couple weeks my battery life has become abysmal. Theyve gone from last 4-7 hours with noise canceling to barely being able to make it through 2 hours of phone called with no noice canceling. Not sure what happened. Either the batteries hit their peak or a firmware update killed them. Case never lived up to expectations either. Super cheap feeling, opens very easily meaning your earbuds can go flying. Case at max could recharge the earbuds one full time and maybe 20% of another charge. Now it can only charge to about 80% without also being charged itself. I likely will get another pair of these or wait for XM-5s as i do love them, but just know they may not last more than a year

Great fit, great noise canceling

And I also had trouble hearing Netflix shows & music with them without turning the volume up higher than safe for your ears. But I hated having to spend so much $$ without being able to try out the fit first. Cause no matter the quality of the earbuds, if it doesn't stay in my ear it's worthless. But of course you can't try them in store so I researched as best I could (see CNET) and took the plunge. No regrets, fit well, never fall out never feel like they might and are comfortable. I also love love love the noise canceling. Not only can I hear things without having to turn up too high, I'm able to keep the volume really really low. This should also be great on planes, which was a problem in the past. I'm still getting to know these, but I like how noise canceling stops when you begin talking and it pauses your media. I also like how the app let's you test the fit for noise canceling and will prompt you to adjust if necessary. Has an ear measuring option in-app also, to ensure you are using the best tip. i haven't fooled with thst yet as I'm happy with the one I'm using. And for those new to noise canceling, you can turn it on and off or ambient mode, so you don't have to use it when not appropriate. Also of note, I've had surgery on one of my ears and hearing in that ear isn't great with loud tinnitus and it's harder to keep an earbud in...but these are great for me. I've also used the noise canceling by itself when using noisy machine, it didn't block it but reduced it some, I'd say comparable to disposable ear plugs where it muffled the noise hopefully enough to protect my ears from damage. When I use it to watch Netflix & things on my phone though, everything else literally disappears, its amazing.

Super comfortable once you get the right ear tip on. The noise canceling is amazing, same with ambient sound. You don't need to increase the volume much to reduce outside noise. Additionally crazy awesome connection distance, I've been able to connect them to my phone walk away like 30-40 feet and still be connected.

The quality and design are nice, and they are reasonably comfortable. But the noise cancelation and sound quality are closer to $50 earbuds. Even after adjusting the EQ and settings, they were not near what you should expect for the price. I would not recommend these at all. I returned them within 30 minutes and went with Bose QCII

settings. This is definitely not the experience we'd like you to have. We'd like to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn your experience around.
For sound quality related issue, please try the following:
If the size of the earbud tips does not match the size of your ear canals or the headset is not properly worn on your ears, tap operations or the speech detection of Speak-to-Chat may not be successful, or you may not obtain proper sound qualities, noise canceling effects, or call performances.
If any of this is the case, try the following.
Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The size of the left and right earbud tips may be different.
The “Sony | Headphones Connect” app will help you to determine which earbud tips are most suitable for you to achieve the optimal noise cancellation effect.
Check if the headset is properly worn on your ears. Wear the headset so that the earbud tip is comfortably situated as deep in the ear canal as possible.
Turn down the volume of the connected device if it is too loud.
Switch the Bluetooth connection to A2DP with the connected device when the headset and the transmitting Bluetooth device are connected via an HFP or HSP Bluetooth connection.
If the headset connects to the previously connected Bluetooth device, the headset may only establish the HFP/HSP Bluetooth connection when it is turned on. Use the connected device to connect via an A2DP Bluetooth connection.
When listening to music from a computer on the headset, the sound quality may be poor (e.g., difficult to hear the singer’s voice, etc.) for the first few seconds after a connection is established. This is due to the computer specifications (priority on stable connection at the start of transmission and then switches to priority on sound quality several seconds later) and is not a headset malfunction.
If the sound quality does not improve after a few seconds, use the computer to establish an A2DP connection. As for the operations on your computer, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the computer.

Not saying the pros are bad, sony clearly knows how to make quality sound products and the XM4 earbuds are no excrption! Fit is comfy and well balanced. You dont even feel them in your ears. And the nice features like automatic noise adjustmet and speak feature when you start talking is nice! Good buy.

However after 35hrs of use, the right ear bud will no longer fully charge and drains much quicker than the left. Have followed the reset/repair options and did not correct anything. As of this writing Firmware is 2.0.1. I’m guessing this is a known issue with this model as Sony is replacing them at no charge even out of warranty.

A great pair of headphones with unreal ANC

Sound quality is crisp, loud, the noise cancellation is unreal ( you really could get hit by a car wearing these things with anc turned on. Extreamly comfortable, if you're even considering these just do it. They're great.

It would only last about 20 minutes of use after a full charge when the right one would last about 2.5 hours. They also get hot to the touch now after charging. After googling, its apparantly a known manufacturer issue and really upsetting since these earbuds were one of the best I tried.

This is definitely not the customer experience we want you to have. Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. While it is normal for the battery consumption rate to vary somewhat between the left and right earbuds due to function settings and conditions of use, a significant difference between the earbuds, when regularly used together, should not occur.
