I would say it's definitely worth upgrading over the previous generation. The audio quality is a lot better well as a better fitment. Call quality is excellent compared to the previous generation. My only complaint is that the charging case feels a little flimsy.

Cracked eartips

In contacting Sony to request replacement eartips I was told that I would need to purchase new eartips because they weren't covered by the warranty. While I was expecting to have to replace the eartips at somepoint, having to do so after 3 weeks is ridiculous especially for earbuds at this price!

Best headphones I've used

They're comfortable, don't fall out of my ears and they come with foam tips. (I generally install these when buying earbuds). I have these as well as the WH1000xm4 over the ear headphones and prefer these to the over-the ears. It will be personal preference as they both sound great but the noise canceling doesn't sound as "eerie" to me on these. It's hard to describe but the over the ear version sounds weird to me and makes me uncomfortable. Battery life is great and charging dock is smaller than most earbuds.

Bad ear seals

On the downside was not expecting the ear seals to give out less then two months from the date of purchase ….and that’s not using more than a few times a week for maybe 1hr at a time

Excellent sound, comfort and ANC
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sony has a real one with the WF-1000XM4 buds. They look stylish, fit well and sound phenomenal. The only problem is that it’s fairly easy for these Sony WF-1000XM4 buds to either sound extremely good or mediocre. Sound quality is greatly affected by the fit. With a good, airtight seal, music sounds loud, clear and well balanced. Highs are crisp without sounding overly bright or piercing. Mids and vocals have good balance and the bass is tight and with decent resonance. If the seal is loose and less than ideal, volume sounds lower and everything sounds much flatter, especially bass. ANC is also adversely affected by a poor seal as sound more easily intrudes. With proper fit, ANC works well and provides an isolated immersive soundstage for listening to music. It’s also quite useful for calls. The ambient sound feature works well but has a noticeable low hiss when active. Communications sound good on the wearer side. Voices are clear, easily intelligible, and free of distortion. I’ve been advised it also sounds clear and quiet on the other end although callers can easily tell I’m not using a handset. They say I sound like I’m using a high-quality speaker phone and advised me that background noise is virtually non-existent. Buds can be used together or either bud can be used independently. The buds are comfortable and have tacky memory foam type tips. Only three tip sizes (S, M, L) are included which makes it somewhat difficult to achieve a perfect airtight fit inside some ears. I have shallow ears that aren’t particularly well suited for the new twist in style earbuds. None of the three sizes fit me perfectly and I have to do quite a bit of adjusting to get a solid airtight fit. Thankfully, Sony includes a few fitment tools to help determine whether the proper tips are installed and the buds are inserted properly inside the ear. The foam tips also thankfully conform to my ear shape. It takes a little more effort to get a good airtight seal but the buds stay in place reliably whether the seal is tight or loose. They are also water resistant. I don’t have to freak out when it rains or if I wear them around water. All features are controlled through the Sony Headphones Connect app. The app allows me to configure the buds by enabling features like 360 Reality audio, DSEE Extreme and adjusting the built-in equalizer. The EQ has presets and can be manually set. Tap-driven controls for playback, volume and ambient sound can be custom assigned to either bud. The app also handles firmware updates, displays battery levels for the buds and case, and can configure the buds for use with smart assistants like Alexa or Siri. The 360 audio can only be used with certain services for now. I don’t subscribe to any of the services, so I listen to HD and High Res instead. Both sound so good through these buds, I seriously doubt 360 audio would improve sound that much better. I have a Sony 360 audio speaker and barely notice any difference between it and another high-end speaker without 360. Included in the package is a charging case, the aforementioned extra tips and a short charging cable that is approximately 6.5” between connectors. Although annoyingly short, the USB-C to USB-A cable at least has “Sony” printed on it, which helps me keep it organized easier. The case is also Qi compatible, so I likely won’t ever use the cable anyhow. The small pill shaped case has a battery status light that shows the status of the buds when inserted and the case when the buds are removed. I easily get two or more days of moderate use out of the case and buds per charge with ANC enabled. The XM4’s fit me more secure than all other buds except Bose. I can wear these while active with very little fear or concern. They sound better than any buds I’ve owned so far and look pretty stylish to boot. The rose gold mic adds a nice touch of flair. Sound quality is extremely good but almost totally dependent on a nice airtight seal. It would have been better had Sony included additional tip sizes to accommodate different ear shapes and sizes. Despite this one shortcoming, most people should be able to fit the included foam tips into their ears sufficiently enough for the buds to stay secure and the music to sound its best.

Batteries don't last after warranty period

Completely unusable now because of this and conveniently right after the 1 year warranty ran out. This is after a year of normal usage. The case also doesn't hold charge as much. I've seen other reviews state similar battery issues, why would I pay 300$ for earphones that only last a year? Having said that, it's easily the best quality ear-phones I've used when it actually used to work.

Not only the sound but it also has great bass. I can’t tell the difference in sound quality from my Sony over the head headphones. The built quality is excellent and the battery life is outstanding. Another department where these earbuds shine is the noise canceling. I will also say it is one of the best I have experienced so far, I will say better than my Bose earbuds. I honestly don’t know what the tips are made of but I can say they do feel very comfortable and make a nice seal. Setting them up is very easy. Download the Sony headphones/connect, follow the instructions or just go into your bluetooth settings and that's it. There is this nice feature that I really liked and I was impressed by, it’s called transparency. Is liked you have the noise cancellation on but you can still hear a person if they are talking to you. That was really cool stuff. Launching Google assistant was also a breeze just saying the trigger word no need to press any buttons. The surface on these are touch sensitive so you can trigger different types of command by touching it like fast forward or answer phone calls. Phone calls on these headsets were pretty good. People on the other end were able to hear me with no problem. Over all these are by far one of the greatest noise canceling headphones with great sound I have owned. In the box you get the earbuds, charging case which is USB-C by the way, charging cable and some manuals.

Highly recommended Sony buds
