If you are looking for High Quality sound you will find it hard to beat these earbuds. With an excellent balance in sound everything comes across clear and solid. The noise cancellation is great. I used these to work out in the gym and found all other earbuds to have a hard time competing with their sound quality. The major draw back with these that made me return them were call quality. If you can use these in a non busy setting they are are great but in an active environment where there is a lot of noise they picked up far to much back ground noise to have a good conversation so they did not work for me.

      Hi Fire4k,

We're glad that you like the sound quality and noise canceling function of the headphones. It's unfortunate that the headphones were returned because of the call quality. For optimum performance, it is recommended to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app). These steps are also helpful in improving call quality issues:

-Re-establish the connection between the source device and the headset.
-Select HFP or HSP for the profile.
-You can also check the settings of the app that you are using for mic sensitivity if available.

Thanks for sharing your review and we hope you consider Sony in your future purchase.

Good but not great. The earpieces provided by Sony aren’t great and I ordered different foam tips as the ones from Sony lasted maybe 2 months before getting torn. Sound quality is what you’d expect from Sony, but mics for calls isn’t the best, people say it sounds muffled.

Hi Jayson, Amazing! We're very happy to hear you like the overall features and performance of your WF1000XM4. We provide an assortment of earbuds in various sizes to ensure there is a great fit for all ear sizes. To obtain a comfortable and stable fit, try the following.

Change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The size of the left and right earbud tips may be different.

The “Sony | Headphones Connect” app will help you to determine which earbud tips are most suitable for you to achieve the optimal noise cancellation effect.

Referring to step 2, check if the headset is properly worn on your ears. Wear the headset so that the earbud tip is comfortably situated as deep in the ear canal as possible.

I purchased these in Nov. '21, and these were far and away my favorite earbuds despite some intial connectivity issues that I experienced which seem to have been fixed with software updates, however unfortunately the battery in the left earbud started draining significantly faster than the right earbud to the point where I can only get a couple hours before I have to charge them again, and of course they're a few months past the limited warranty expiring. For the price point I would've liked to get a few more years out of these at least. Disappointing as the sound quality and noise cancelling made these perfect for working while in a cube farm.

The biggest issue I originally had was the comfort period however I was able to buy some custom ear tips that weren't the phone ones but still provide a good noise isolation. This made them world better to wear without any ear fatigue. However about 2 months ago the right ear but just started dying within about 20 minutes. If you read online forms you'll find this is a common issue with these earbuds. I've done all the reset / restarts etc and nothing works. If you do make the choice to purchase these get the warranty it's not worth the hassle to have to deal with Sony

I was originally using the Anker Soundcore Liberty Pro 2 earbuds and loved everything about them until I bought the XM4 over the ear headphones and was blown away by how great they sounded and how fantastic the noise cancelling was. Then I saw the XM4 earbuds and was trying to justify buying those when I had the other XM4s and the Soundcore ones... then a buddy at work lost his Liberty Pro 2s and I sold him mine and immediately got these. They sound almost as good as the over the ear XM4s, the noise cancelling is just as good. They are simply amazing.

I returned this item because it has some built-in setting that reduces decibels and bass and depth once you go over 60% of volume, I get they're adding nannies to everything for protection to ears, etc, but I don't need Sony to create software that reduces the punch in speakers when I want to turn up and crank up the volume, intensity in speakers should remain all the way from lowest to highest setting on volume. This isn't some feature you can fix with the app either, I worked the app and adjusted as much as you can to ensure you have adjustments done properly. I don't mind spending money on the best that's out there, but when I can buy Jaybirds or some other brand at half the cost with better performance and fewer nannies telling you how you should listen to music. It's truly an epic fail by sony and the design isn't even built for an active lifestyle. Sony needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Hi Jpmaze, We are sorry to hear that you had to return the WF-1000XM4 Headphones due to a low sound level when going over 60% of volume.

This issue can be isolated by trying these steps.

Turn up the volume of the connected device. When the volume adjustment function is assigned to the touch sensor with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, you can adjust the volume on the headset during music playback.

Even when the volume adjustment function has been assigned to the touch sensor with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, you cannot adjust the volume on the headset during a call. Adjust the volume on the connected device. If you are unable to adjust the volume on the connected device, install the “Sony | Headphones Connect” smartphone app and adjust the volume on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

Connect the Bluetooth device to the headset once again.

The sound conduits (sound output tubes), air holes, and microphone holes (in 2 locations) of the headset are not completely watertight. If any water droplets are left in the sound conduits, air holes, or microphone holes (in 2 locations), sound level becomes low temporarily, but this is not a malfunction. See our help guide link:  https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wf1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP1000241098.html and dry the headset before use.

Also, you may try resetting and initializing the WF-1000XM4 to troubleshoot.

To reset please follow this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wf1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP1000428696.html

      To initialize: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wf1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP1000428697.html

Additionally, depending on the connected device, the volume of the device and the headset may or may not be synced. If the volume on a device is not synced to the volume on the headset, it will not be possible to use the device to turn up the volume on the headset once the volume is turned down on the headset.

Thank you for your review and we hope that you consider Sony again in your future purchases.

      Regards,

      Carl Sony_US

    Fit and BT

I am not going to discuss the ANC or the audio quality which are good. My review is on the fitting and the BT disconnecting, as some have already commented here. I read the ‘professional’ reviews in the Internet, and some commented on the fitting. Independently of the template response from Sony about fitting where they repeat what you get on the manual because assume users do not read it but only complain. Well, most, if not all of us, do read your instructions, we do get the software update, we do try the different tips, we do run the tip tester routine in the app. Still the fitting for many users, in this case mine and my wife both, was not reliable. It is extreme bothersome to lose the ANC because of you swallowing or do any jaw movements and then trying to re0fit them again. BT is horrible and it is a serious problem. After pairing and working with them for a bit. Then trying to use them again and the earphones not connecting to the phone after several attempts (putting back in the box, closing the box, reopening the box, taking them out again… nothing), and having to re-pair them while at my home office with the phone on the desk. I thought it was strange but when it happens in the airplane and you cannot hear anything and trying to pair, that is more painful. It did happen to both my wife’s and mine, so it is not an isolated issue. Fine, it does connect, and you are enjoying some music. Suddenly some 15 minutes later it stops. You check your phone and the earphone is disconnected and because of that the music was paused. Of course, you cannot re-connect from the phone or the app (I tried,) so there you go placing them in the box and out, so they connect again. You are then again listening to music and some 10 minutes the left side goes silent while the right keeps going. I read the ‘recommendations’ from Sony. My phone was in my front left pocket (maybe 24” separation, no obstacles, no people, no metal.) No, don’t want to carry my phone on my hand on front of me to insure I do not get disconnects, although it did happen when on a table while watching a movie. No, I don’t want to put my phone further away either, because I want to be able to watch the movie at a reasonable distance. So maybe if I configure it to sacrifice sound quality for BT reliability? But then, why pay premium? Thanks to Best Buy for accepting the return of both sets. My cheap $40 Boltune earphones have NEVER, EVER disconnected much less have I ever needed to re-pair them. Maybe as Sony as licensed (I’ve read) their ANC from Bose they could license the BT connectivity from Boltune? Just a thought.

Expect a year of good battery...

*Negative first - a critical piece of info if you plan on keeping these longer than a year* After over a year of use, my BIGGEST problem is that I no longer get the advertised battery life. I'll get maybe an hour and a half before my right bud dies out completely then I'm forced to wait and charge. They charge pretty quickly (0 to 90% after 30ish minutes) but the case battery is also starting to hold less charge. I'd be lucky to get maybe 7 hours of total use for the full day. And they seem to last less and less as the months go by. Of course Sony's convenient 1 year warranty does nothing to remedy the issue, and replacing the battery doesn't seem to be an option unless you REALLY know what you're doing. I loved these headphones when I first got them. Amazing noise cancellation and the ability to cancel out wind noise is really nice for outside use. Google assistant works just as well as it does on the phone. The quality of sound you get from these is crystal clear with nice bass. And with the app you can use the EQ to adjust the sound in case you want more bass, or want to lower the mids and anything else. The the first problem I had was the ear tips, being a bit uncomfortable to get use to. They also started showing signs of wear and tear within a couple of months. I would suggest buying silicon tips that are compatible if you can't adjust to the included tips. The second problem I had was the random bugs. Sometimes I would get random disconnects, with no reason as to why. Other times a bud would just shut off while the other would still be playing music. The most consistent problem is that the ambient sound feature momentarily turns off whenever there's a loud electronic beeping sound. Microwave is done heating food? Off. Crosswalk beeps to signify you can walk? Off. Large truck is backing up? Off. All times you would WANT the ambient sound to be working. Other thoughts: I do wish they had support for simultaneous bluetooth connections so I could connect both my laptop and phone at the same time. I guess that'll be a feature for the XM5s whenever they come out. Also LDAC is nice to use for higher quality sound but it comes with the price of lower battery life and a less stable bluetooth connection. Most issues I had with these earbuds I could ignore for the quality ANC and great sound. But after using these consistently for over a year, I'm considering going wired again. My headphones from college are still going strong after 20 years, and they cost less than half of what these did. Battery technology just isn't quite there to convince me to waste another $300 on disposable earbuds that will end up in a landfill after 2 years.

      Hi DanZ,

We're sorry to hear about the issue with the WF-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones. We apologize for the inconvenience. The earbuds may not work as designed if they are not worn properly, or the size of the earbud tips doesn't match the size of your ear canals. Gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal. The Noise Isolation Earbud Tips (for the WF-1000XM4 headphones) will adjust their shape to fit in your ears. Wait for about 10 seconds for the earbud tip shape to stabilize, and then check that they fit firmly in your ears and if the noise canceling effect is sufficient. If you feel the earbud tips don't fit well, or the noise canceling effect is insufficient, remove and reinsert the earbuds, making sure the earbud tips fit snug in your ears. Different sizes of earbud tips are supplied so that you can achieve the maximum effects of the earbuds. Ear canals vary in size from person to person, and can also vary in size from the left to the right sides. Use the Determines Optimal Earbud Tips function in the Headphones Connect app to check the size of the earbud tips that best fit your ears.

For the function issue, you can isolate the issues of the headphones by following the troubleshooting steps from this link: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm4/articles/00204483

So I bought these for my wife's birthday. She was very excited to get them, well the unfortunate part is they are way way too big for a smaller person. I don't see anyone mentioning this anywhere either. But be warned this will not fit in your average ear. Even with small buds these need to sit pretty far into your ears to seat properly. Plus sound quality isn't great. The only reason for these are for noise cancelling and ear plugs are a lot cheaper.
