Tale of 2 headphone - good ANC, lifeless sound.
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought two sets of these headphones, one for me and one as a gift for my partner. She kept hers and loved them but I returned mine. The difference is simple - she was using them for the home office so her priority was ANC. She's not a huge "audiophile" if I can say that without sounding like a snob. And the ANC on these is incredible. On the other hand my top priority was sound quality. I travel a lot for work and wanted something that could let me relax on the plane. After a couple days trying them out, I thought that these just sounded awful for the price, with or without the ANC on and with or without the Sony app. The audio quality was flat and distorted, with a bad mid range and lifeless bass. It sounded compressed and artificially/digitally juiced up in a way that I just hated. At the end of the day I thought the ANC was kind of a gimmick if I couldn't end up with good audio quality at the same time. I actually thought my $70 3M bluetooth earmuffs had better sound (even though they're much less sleek looking) My partner didn't feel the same way, but she was mostly using them for the noise cancelling. She also didn't pay for them lol ... I feel like for $300 I should have had better sound.

Great
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This one is great. You will get lost in the world. It is quite dangerous for me because I use this while walking in the subway going to work. You have to be aware of the things around you since the only thing that you can hear is the sound or the voice that comes out of the headphone.

Good sound quality, a little overpriced
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great sound quality, but the selling point of the customizable sound via the Sony app is something that may not be worth paying for

One of the best ANC, wireless headphonea
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As I've stated in other reviews, my wife thinks I have a headphone problem. I like to buy a couple pairs a year as I sell my older units. I had the 2nd generation of these headphones and liked them but their comfort and build quality were just OK, I also didn't like the touch controls because they would pause my music, skip tracks, or change volume when I would rest my head on the headrest in airplane seats. So I kept my QC35ii headphones and returned the Sony's in hopes that the 3rd generation would improve. Well, Sony has improved and then some. With the 2nd generation of headphones, Sony matched the best of their competition. But they have surpassed everyone here with these. Their dedicated ANC processor is able to adapt, instantly, to any situation. The headphones can detect if I'm sitting at my desk, on a plane, walking, or standing still and automatically adjust their ANC. You want to let in more sound when walking so you're more aware of your surroundings whereas you want to just cancel everything out on a plane. Sony has really hit the nail on the head here with their ANC and I can't say enough good things about it. I also like that, unlike the QC35ii headphones, these don't exert any pressure on my eardrums when the ANC is activated. I don't like the feeling that my ears need popped and that's how I always feel when using my QC35ii headphones. Not the case here though, Sony did an excellent job. Sony also improved the build quality and comfort of the headphones. The earpad openings are larger and a little deeper (though still shallower than my QC35ii), the padding has also increased. Sony added additional padding in the headband and reinforced their joints. People who experienced cracking issues with the 1st and 2nd generation models should not have those issues anymore (though a friend of mine with their 2nd gen hasn't had any issues). These headphones are still heavier than the QC35ii but they are just as comfortable. I can wear them for hours on end without issues. The touch controls were also improved, they don't activate themselves when I lean up against a leather headrest. I haven't flown with them but I tested them in my car and nothing happened. The controls seem less finicky and have better success at working whereas only about 60% of my attempts with the 2nd generation would result in a successful action. The app remains unchanged, it gives you options to adjust the EQ, bass level, positioning of the music, ANC, atmospheric pressure, and view information such as battery life and the codec being used. If you've used the app before, you'll be at home here. I do think these sound very similar to the 2nd generation and that's just fine. With some tuning, I thought they were pretty good. Not studio reference quality but I'm not looking for that and you definitely won't find anything like that in headphones with ANC. The bass is deep and rich though it can cover up some of the mids resulting in a muddier sound. They aren't nearly as muddy as other brands (*cough* Skullcandy, JBL, *cough*) but the mids are definitely recessed. The soundstage is about as wide as you can expect from a pair of ANC headphones, you will get clear stereo separation out of them and even some instrument placement but not too much. Sony added USB-C for charging (thank you!) and still includes a 3.5mm cable and airline adapter in the rigid case. The only thing I don't like is that these headphones cannot remain connected to more than one device at a time. When I'm traveling, I always bring my phone and tablet with me. It would have been nice if I could have remained connected to both at the same time. That way, when I'm watching a movie on my tablet, I can answer a phone call without having to disconnect from my tablet and reconnect to my phone. It's not the end of the world but, at this price, they should be able to connect to at least two devices at once. It's a convenience when traveling and something that the QC35ii headphones accomplish. That's about it though. Sony made more comfortable, lighter headphones that have even better ANC, still really good sound quality, USB-C charging (I can charge my headphones with my MacBook's charger), all while increasing their battery life to 30 hours. I hope Sony adds multi-device support with the 4th generation and more color options. I would love it if they partnered with someone so that we could customize them. I highly recommend these for people who work in offices, travel, are trying to study on campus and in shared living spaces, or just want to drown out the world.
