I’ve been using these Sony noise-cancelling headphones for a week or so and I have to say that I’m impressed. I got them to take the place of an older set of Sony over-the-ear headphones that I loved but had recently met an untimely end (thanks to the dog…). I must say, the 1000XM3’s are a huge improvement over my older ones. Sound quality is noticeably cleaner and clearer, battery life is much improved, comfort is substantially better (especially for glasses wearers), and the addition of active noise cancelling is a huge plus when travelling. Setup is typical to other Bluetooth accessories and painless. Although Sony recommends using their dedicated app, I skipped that section as I had no need for the “benefits” touted in the marketing materials. The folding design and included semi-hard carrying case make these headphones quite packable. The case also has space for the included micro-USB charging cable. They don’t come with a charging block and there really isn’t room in the case to store one, so just bear that in mind. The one note of caution, using the touch-pad like interface rather than physical buttons does take some time to become accustomed to. Once you’ve got it, it’s fairly intuitive. One of my favorite features of that system is the ability to place your palm over the earpiece and the volume immediately drops so you can hear someone speaking or whatever is going on around you without having to pause the music or take the headphones off.

I've always felt that how good a pair of headphones are, depends on your preference. What is good for one may not be for another. For a long time, I have been an avid Bose user and I still use the QC 35 (Gen I) among other Bose Headphones. I did, however, want to try the Sony 1000M3s because a couple of friends I know got them and rave like crazy about them. So I caved and bought them. Where do I start... these headphones are super comfortable? I tend to get ear fatigue after long hours of wearing headphones and so far... no fatigue wearing these even after 5 or 6 hours. In terms of sound, these are heavier in the bass and not as high in the treble compared to my QC35 - but it is nothing overpowering. The sound is crisp and clear, however, some online streaming stations music didn't sound as crisp, but that may be because of how they were encoded or how many times the file was encoded and/or re-encoded, and the fact that it is streaming. But on a clean file, the sound is crisp, clear and, like my QC35, I hear instrumentation that one might not normally hear or, at least, notice with normal everyday headphones. Noise canceling is amazing., It really removes a lot of the sound around you and I mean a lot! The app helps control that, and placing your hand over the right earpiece allows you to listen to things around you when you need to - but the app comes in handy especially if you're at a location where you have to listen for announcements. Based on feedback from friends, when using the microphone, the sound seems to work well. People can hear me and in some cases louder than other headphones. They can also hear a lot of the sound around me. But all in all, they hear me pretty well. As far as digital assistants go, I set mine up to use Alexa. All in all, the virtual assistant in headphones, for me, is "meh". Do we really need it? In order for it to work, your Alexa app has to be open on the phone or tablet, and you have to hit a button on the headphones for it to activate. You don't need to say the name. I was hoping I didn't have to have more apps open on the phone to make it work. However, Alexa works well on these headphones as they do at home. The difference is the app needing to be on. Kind of defeats the purpose. At home, the app doesn't have to be opened. I did not set up Google Assistant so I can't speak to how that works. Battery life is what it is. They claim 30 hours of battery life and so far I've used them for about 26 hours of listening time without a charge. They're still going strong! Volume and other controls: This is a little weird for me. Many times I wanted to lower or raise the volume and instead ended up moving to the next track (or previous track). It's just something you have to get used to in order to get the right position/angle. My preference is having easy to identify buttons that you just press. I know people that love the finger slide instead. It is what it is and I'm sure I will get my finger sliding properly after a while. I still feel it's all about your personal preference/ I am still a huge Bose fan. I love my QC35 and will continue to use it regularly, but these M3s are now part of my collection to be used regularly. They have surpassed my expectations and I give a very small but significant edge to the Sony M3 over my QC35 (battery life and noise canceling did it for me). Everything about these cans is amazing... comfortability, sound and noise canceling are really top notch. All I can say is Wow! If you are looking for a very good experience with noise canceling headphones, take the plunge and get these headphones. You won't be disappointed. I absolutely recommend the Sony - WH-1000XM3.

I had it for a day but returned it. I was upgrading from Audio Technica ATH-M50xBT and the sound quality was not better or worse. The noise cancelling is nice but cannot justify paying $100 for it. Reason why I returned it is that the ear cups feel cheap and it generally felt like it'd break easy especially with kids. Also this thing needs firmware upgrades for some reason.
