Best noise cancelling headphones I've every tried

As someone who owns Bose noise cancelling headphones, these new headphones have blown me away. The noise cancelling is a noticeable step up from the QC 35 I currently. It's light (a tad heavier than the Bose), comfortable (I usually can't stand having most headphones on for a long time as my ears tend to get sore - no issues 3 hours in with this pair), and have a sound quality that blows the Bose or any other noise cancelling headphones I've tried out of the water. Being able to cup the right headphone to pause the noise cancelling to listen to people talking to you without taking off the headphone is a pretty cool feature. Aesthetically, I prefer how the Bose looks, but then again I purchased this for the audio and noise-cancelling properties, not how it looks. The touch controls on the right earpiece took a bit to get used to, but quickly became second nature. Being able to charge via USB-C is a plus as someone who has a Galaxy S8 and a Nintendo Switch, as I can use the same cable. It also lets you charge the headphones via Quick Charge. While I can't speak to it's longevity, the headphones seem to be high quality, and I don't notice any discernible issue with the headband - something that I understand the previous models suffered from. Overall, I am extremely impressed by the WH1000XM3, and it will easily become my every day carry headphones.

    Great Noise Cancelling-Other Weaknesses

    Posted .

I own Bose QC25's, but they are not wireless. Was about to purchase the QC35, when the Sony ...XM3, came on the scene. Made the purchase two days ago. Noticed immediately the following- The build quality (trying to make them superlight) felt poor and cheap. I wouldn't dare let them drop on the floor. Bluetooth- It took several times to get them to connect to my bluetooth device. Also, I could not get them to connect to more than one device at a time (my cheap bluetooth earbuds and headphones do that with no problem). Lastly, when I gave them the 'lawnmower' test, they not only didn't mute out the sound as well as my QC25's, but the music sound kept breaking up from my phone, which was just in my pocket. Nor, could I hear the music clearly or loudly. The music sounded like it was in a recessed tunnel, with the lawnmower running. Now here's the good thing. The sound quality (high and lows) was definitely superior to my QC25's (the bass was punchier, without being booming). Also I did a test in front of the loud tv, switching between them and the QC25's. The QC25's did a great job muting the tv, but I could clearly hear what was being broadcast. The Sony ..XM3's were so good, that although I could hear that the broadcasters were talking (a very low mumble sound), I really could NOT hear what they are saying. Last of all, I could NOT get comfortable with the touch gestures method of controlling them. When I tried to control volume (swiping up and down), I kept changing tracks instead. When I tried to control the tracks, sometimes it would work, sometimes I changed the volume. I want my buttons back. So I'm returning these today and getting the QC35's, which I know will be even better than the QC25's, I have. Bottomline-Great headphones, which I'm sure would be great for travel. Just not for me at that price. I want Bose build quality.

    Best Headset Ever!!!

I've had good headsets before, but this one takes the cake. It has so many features, as well as some of the best sound and bass I have heard. Not only is the bass rich sounding and heavy but the sound is clear at the same time! The noise cancelling feature adds so much to the sound quality, that it virtually sounds too good to be true. the noise cancelling and ambient noise features can easily be adjusted by the button on the headset or by the Sony Headphones App. I highly recommend the app, it has so many added features for manual EQ settings and pre-set sound profiles. It also helps to personalize your sound experience based on elevation, motion and the sound resistance. It's all very impressive. The outside of the right ear cup, has a touch sensor in it that adds motion controls for quick swipes to volume and different tracks. It even makes it possible to quickly hear people talking to you WITHOUT pulling the headset away from your ear, like with traditional headsets, by simply pressing your palm against the outside right ear cup! A must have for all music enthusiasts! These are just simply amazing! as a side note: they also work great on calls having several mics in the unit to pick up your voice loud and clear! these can easily connect to your phone or device through bluetooth or NFC. There was an update to the headphones for a better google assistants experience, when I connected them to the Sony app. It took about 30 minutes to download the update from the phone to the headphones, and everything still works great!

Going on 3 years of sweat & fall damage

I originally wanted these because I work in construction and wanted to deaden the saws and nail guns & to listen to music at work. As soon as I put them on in the store a whole new array of benefits was clear to me. They make everywhere feel like paradise & makes the space between your ears seem like an empty echoing chamber. I put them on before shopping and I truly feel like I’m the only person in a store. I have dropped them the top of houses being framed as well as got enough sweat on the pads to where I was sure I would have either mold or a water damage issue, neither persisted. Overall the benefits of true noise cancellation, the amazing bass for music or 3D sound for podcast, the build quality all make it an easy purchase for me. I’m now just waiting on them to break so I can get my next pair.

Awesome sound but a little heavy

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

These newest upgraded Sony headphones from the wh1000xm2 have awesome sound and super noice cancellation features great for loud areas like a gym or on a departing airplane where you want to cancel out unnecessary noise. The amount of clarity is amazing and while it doesn't have to level of deep bass like the sony XB-series, it has a variety of customizable sound features to enhance your listening experience depending on where you at. My only complaints are despite it being smaller than the wh1000xm2, it still feels a bit heavy on your head especially when your moving around after an hour or two. Battery life is decent, though using maximum sound volume may drain the juice and may require more charges. Also, the texturized material on the wh1000xm2's did not leave fingerprint smudges as these wh1000xm3's do. These leave a lot of fingerprints after using the touch-sensitive controls so you have to constantly wipe them down and be sure your fingers/hands are clean. Other than these two minor complaints, these are the best in their class.

The headphones that reeled me from Bose

    Posted .

I had trouble deciding between these and the Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones, but went with these on a nudge. The noise cancelling is best in class (if not for any single headphone set on the market), the battery life lasts longer than one day with ANC on, the battery fast-charges to 5 hours of life off of 10 minutes, the bass and sound quality are very dynamic and customizable through a smartphone app, and the overall quality is stellar. The only drawback would be that these are slightly heavier than most competitors, but for the extra quality these headphones have it is worth the extra slight weight.

A purchase I thought I was going to regret.

I thought I was going to regret buying these but actually these are some really good headphones. ANC is amazing it gets so quiet and then you can adjust NC depending on where the noise is coming from. Placing you hand over the right earcuff to let in outside and also still listen to music is amazing. I have a conversation and also still listen to my music. I just wish you can do it on both earcuffs (a missed opportunity on Sony's part) but it's not a deal breaker. Battery life is good as well. The ANC to helps the music sound more full. Swipe navigation is a little finicky. But you'll eventually get use to it. I recommend getting a warranty of these because I dropped them the other day from head height and the ANC/Google Assistant/Alexa button doesn't work anymore. Might go into the store and get a replacement, might not, I haven't decided yet. But the button is so useful especially for when replying to text messages and also getting notifications. Overall, a great buy.

well, I've had the Xm1 / Xm2 and today got my Xm3. The sound quality has improved when wireless, also, they do feel a lot lighter and cheaper. I am not sure about the NC, I feel like the Gen 1 and Gen 2 had better NC, maybe I need to fuzz a bit more with my calibration, but I can hear the MTA trains a bit more than before while commuting in NYC. I'll make a 10 Min video this weekend on my overall thoughts on the Xm3, but so far not impressed with the supposed HD Noise Cancelling chip, the QN1.

I bought these on a whim for an upcoming trip I was taking, and absolutely fell in love with them! The noise cancelling is the best that I've ever used, and the sound quality is something that is unmatched by anything I've ever used. The battery lasts forever, and the headphones charge rather quickly. I can't recommend this product enough!

These headphones are fantastic. The noise canceling is the best I’ve ever heard. Levels above the Bose headphones. The customization provided by the app is also some of the best I’ve ever seen. Sony offers many options to the user. They sound really good and clear at higher volumes. You can select to cancel noise, let ambient noise through or just voices through. They battery lasts almost all week. Connectivity is very easy as well. They charge fast with USB-C. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because they cover your ear and after a while your ears begin to sweat. Other than that I don’t think there is a better set of headphones out at the moment.

These are the best headphones I have ever owned or used by MILES! I have found it difficult in the past to find headphones that are both comfortable for long periods of time and that produce quality sound. These are by far the best of the best in both categories! Simply put, I have tried NC headphones in the $500-700 range, none of which come close to these! Trust me, you won't find any better!

    Disappointing Sound Quality

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I own the 1000-XM2's and have been very happy with them. After reading all the stellar reviews of the XM3's decided to plunge back in for an upgrade. I never found the XM2's painful to wear but the promise of even more comfort is always good. I relished being able to charge via USB-C. And I looked forward to the reported improved sound quality. In reality I was so disappointed that I returned them the very next day (today). Here's the good. They are softer. The USB C is a godsend. The ANC is improved. And the sound of listening to music is more spacious and enveloping. Here's the bad. The touch controls have a delay. In comparison to the XM2's my XM3 unit was about a half second slower to respond to the same touch command. So much slower that sometimes I thought the input had failed. This I can live with if need be but it's annoying. Here's what I can't live with. The overall sound quality. They sound bad. Legitimately bad. I honestly do not know what all the reviewers are talking about. The increased bass response is completely unnatural. Good bass does not make itself known, it's just a natural extension of the sound. Instead, it's readily apparent that the bass is cranked up. I can mostly live with that unless it takes away from the rest of the presentation. Going back and forth for a full day with the XM2's, I can definitively say my XM3 unit sounded muddy, muddled, and lacking crispness. The difference was astounding. I keep the response curve flat and leave on the default settings including the high quality stream. I'm using Google Music on a Pixel 2XL as my source. The highs lose their definition and edge. Things that should be clear, crisp, sound like they are coming through fabric or drywall or something. Going back to the XM2, they were far tighter and clear. The XM3 does soften the hard edges of older recordings. My albums by The Monkees sound better with the high treble softened, but on modern music, it's frustrating to try to hear the edge of sounds that now just blend like mush into the mid bass. I had a co-worker do a blind test. After 20 seconds with the XM3's, he declared they sound terrible. He confirmed what I had been feeling and told me to keep the XM2's. Maybe I had a bad unit. When I tested the floor model of the XM2's a few months ago it sounded like garbage but the reviews were so good I took a chance. My home unit sound way way way better. So with the stellar reviews of the XM3's I figured it was a safe buy. I am incredibly disappointed. I really really really really really wanted to like these. I really did. But reading gleeful claims that they have a "laid back" sound while comparing to the more "lively" B&W PX headphones is a joke. If "laid back" means lacks definition and accurate energy... then okay, they are super laid back. I want it to sound right. I want guitars to have that edge. Vocals to sound present, not behind a veil. Bass to have quick response, not lingering mud. These sound like they have a standing wave in the midbass. As a side note: I've never gotten the NFC pairing to work on with the XM2 or XM3. It seems I'm in the minority. But reading other reviews I see people talking about how similar the sound quality is between the XM2 and XM3. Not for me. Vastly different. I'll miss the greater sound stage, but I'll easily pick a more accurate sound than the mud.
