Great Audio, Terrible Phone Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Update: After connecting with Sony, they promptly sent me another pair and a shipping label for the first set. The second set has its own problems. Call quality has improved, but the other party hears static and the echo is still there. Also the right ear cup has a clicking noise as I move my head or even as I move my jaw. I can reproduce the clicking when compressing the padding with my palm. I'm hoping to get in touch with Sony again to get great quality headphones. Out of the box, I wasn't terribly impressed by the sound of these headphones. Active Noise Cancellation was slightly less than I expected compared to my Bose QC35. Most background noise like my dishwasher from my kitchen down the hall was gone, but I could still hear my daughter's voice somewhat clearly while she was in the same room. (Even after toggling the ANC modes). So it seems to me Sony has cut more of the high and low frequencies than Bose has achieved. But Bose seems to cut more of the mid-range frequencies than Sony. I played around with the touch controls which is a great idea, but I tend to like physical buttons. I like the confidence of physical buttons. Cupping the right earcup with your palm temporarily allows background sounds in, which is a much welcome feature over other manufacturers. The audio game really changes once you manipulate the headphones through the Sony Connect app. The upgrade to firmware 2.0.0 took an unusually long time. The Sony Headphones Connect app automatically tunes to atmospheric pressure, and allows you to fiddle with an equalizer. There are some presets available but having this ability takes the audio quality of the Sony headphones far above the Bose QC35. You also have controls over the sound scape and can vary the ANC levels more so than the 3 presets available from the ANC button on the headphones. Unfortunately, two aspects really cripple these headphones. While Sony does offer multi-point Bluetooth, you need to manually set one device to media and the second device to phone calls. It's not as easy as connecting both to Bluetooth and letting the headphones seamlessly hand off between two source devices. Bose wins on this point. The other aspect, to which I'm left scratching my head, is phone performance. I've read many technology previews of the 'Mark 3' headphones and several don't even mention phone performance. Or that they're great without going into any detail whatsoever. While wearers of the 'Mark 3' headphones hear the other party clearly. The other party will hear you as muffled as trying to speak through a pillow. On top of that, the other party hears their voice echo back to them. This is quite disappointing. I hoped this poor phone performance was limited to the stock firmware. But after upgrading to the latest firmware, this issue persists. I then spoke to a co-worker and they have the same experience. After doing some digging on Reddit, there are some others that complain of similar poor performance. After some troubleshooting, my co-worker and I have determined that calls within apps such as Skype and WhatsApp are fine, but native calls on Android and iOS devices experience poor performance. However, we also found that while wired into a phone, the problem is solved. This poses another problem because several modern phones don't have a headphone jack. I half hoped that I was experiencing a one-off performance, but after learning my co-worker having the same problem as well as a few 3-Star reviews on Amazon and reading experiences on Reddit, I'm led to the conclusion that this performance is more common that I would hope for a flagship product such as these Mark 3 headphones. If you know you're never going to use these for phone calls, they're great, Sony Headphones Connect app gives you great control to make these sound very impressive. As for phone calls, these Mark 3 headphones are completely unusable until Sony can figure out how to fix this with a firmware update. If I could match up these headphones when I get a telemarketer call, I might have some fun with this.

Worth your money, beats Bose and Beats!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best headsets I've ever worn, they are comfortable and easy to use. The touch controls are a bit clumsy but the sound and the silence make up for it. This a "wear during an intercontinental flight" headset and could only be beaten by the most high end wired headphones in the market. For a wireless noise canceling set at the $350 price range this is the clear winner.

Don't Buy if You Want To Be Heard
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, the good: they're comfortable, if a little hot, the sound is great, the ANC is great, and the battery life/quick charge is phenomenal. That said, DO NOT BUY THESE to use as a headset. I've been through three pairs, and the echo on the microphones render them useless. The people you are talking to won't understand you, and neither will Google Assistant. I promise you that you won't want to take these off every time you get a call - it gets annoying really quickly. I'm giving up and getting a refund. Here's hoping they get it right in a later production run.

Sony made me love them again!!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off I must say I use to hate Sony. They use to be one of the top brands for anything electronic up until a few years ago. After performing extensive research on noise canceling headphones, I decided to go to bestbuy and hear the Bose. The Bose delivered a great sound as I expected but I was curious to see why Sony had a pair of headphone priced at 350.00 when they typically don’t provide quality sounding products. I must say I had to eat my words and thoughts on these headphones. They blew Bose completely out of the water. I’m an audiophile and I certainly can tell the quality of sound in speakers and when I say Sony means business with these headphones, take my word. Needless to say I got the Sony over the Bose. These are amazing without any equalization from the app but the app is a super plus to these already awesome headphones. Sony has truly brought back sound and I’m the first person to admit it. Great job Sony!!!

Love them
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Have never had a pair of headphones with NC but decided the splurge. First use was on a flight and wow! I like the touch controls/fewer physical buttons. Their seal is so good that I have found I either need to pull one slightly off the ear or hold the nose and clear my ears occasionally--not something I mind for this kind of quality.

Not for me
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These aren't bad but I feel like the are overpriced and too gimmicky. I wanted a set of headphones with aptX HD. I mostly use streaming services for books and music while working. These headphones offer some nice extras like having noise canceling and equalizer/sound stage settings. The noise cancelling is great considering that was not a function I had a demand for; I work in an office that generally isn't too noisy. However, I notice you have to downgrade your streaming quality from aptX HD to SBC in order to use the equalizer/sound stage settings. That pretty much defeats my purpose purchasing a better set of wireless headphones. Plus, you wouldn't know that until after you've brought it home and set it up. The other issue I had was with vocals sounding distant and echoing. The extra bass was nice but I felt as if I was standing outside the party in terms of hearing to the vocals and the bass. For some of the music I listened to that was fine, just not what I would want as a all-purpose setting. I wanted to find something I can set and forget that sounds great with whatever I'm streaming since everybody has to have an app now. I'm not fond of having to rely heavily on the use of an app to manipulate the sound quality. Additionally, the build materials and overall look doesn't really come across as a premium tech upgrade or make a statement in the durability department. These headphones OK, I'm just not comfortable with "OK" at this price point. Although, these are the first wireless set I've tried that offered not only bass, but also volume. So if my personal gripes are not a real issue maybe you'll like them a little better than I did.

Best wireless headphones EVER!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These headphones sound amazing all around from great highs and mids and really punchie bass. They also beat every headphone in the ANC (Active Noise Caneling) market. If your thing about getting the Bose Quite Comfert II or the Beats studios don’t especially the beats they are trash compared to these.

Amazing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I can’t believe I haven’t bought noise cancelling headphones sooner in my life. Somebody mentioned they wanted to get new headphones, and they wanted noise cancelling. It made me start thinking about it and thought it would be a great idea. I do a lot of studying in public spaces. So with little research and budget in mind, I purchased some $200 AudioTechnicas. I was happy with them, but my friend in the market for headphones wasn’t totally impressed and started helping me do research. I’m so happy I came across the perfectly timed release of these Sony headphones. I went ahead and spent the extra $150 to up my game and see what this experience was all about. All I got to say is WOW. These puppies are night and day better then the $200 AudioTechnicas and truly deliver the experience I was hoping for with a set of noise cancelling headphones. I want to wear them everywhere I go, just living in my quiet little peaceful world. I’ll take these off and think holy crap, we got blenders going and TVs blaring, people laughing and I had forgotten i don’t live in this world alone for a while. I can tell you that you can’t go wrong buying these guys. They live up to the hype.

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Do Not buy the Beats Studio 3. I've been using Beats for years. So lucky I bought the Sony 's. Incredible sound. Can almost feel the bass in my chest. Totally adjustable via the app. I listen to Metal. Charging cable is way too short. All good.

Mind = Blown
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been eyeing the Sony WH-1000XM3 since they came out just a couple of weeks ago. I have had them for the better part of the day and had a great time testing them out. Would have to say that the Sony WH-100XM3 are some of the best wireless noise canceling over the ear headphones out as of now. Being able to customize the noise canceling with the app is absolutist. You even have the ability to cancel out most acoustic sound excluding voices of the people around you. This was great when using the headphones on a small flight as i could still hear the crew talking but barely could hear the engines of the airplane. Yes these are a bit expensive, but if premium sound, class leading noise canceling and customization are your jam... well then you'll find the value on their high price tag. Good job Sony on a great product!

Great, except for smaller heads
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The product itself is excelent. My only issue with it being that it doesnt accomodate smaller heads so it puts pressure on the back of my jaw and feels really loose. Other than this, all of its features function the way they should

It died Jim ...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought these headphones, I really enjoyed them for a week and a half. Then two nights ago they wouldn't connect to bluetooth (tried two different devices). After several resets and such they finally connected and worked the rest of the night. The next day I arrive at the gym, turn them on and nothing. I knew they were fully charged. Just in case I went home and charged them. The charge light was red for a while, then turn off (indicating they were fully charged). I hit the power button and nothing happened. Fortunately its within the return period. Not sure if I'll get another pair (the color I bought isn't in stock near me at the moment). When they did work: the sound quality was very good. Too muffled and bass emphasis at the default but the Sony Connect app EQ fixed it so I liked it. Noise cancelling was excellent. The app is a little wonky but very useful. The one phone call I tried didn't sound good to the person I was speaking to. My 4 stars is for its normal operation. I assume I just got a bad pair but between spending $350 plus tax, the fact that I have another option at home (B&W P7 Wireless - similar to the Sony once I used the Connect app but no noise cancelling) and the uncertainty if this is in face just a bad model or if its a defect that will come up consistently makes me unsure if I'll exchange it for a replacement or buy another one later.

Amazing sound quality
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The headset delivers in sound quality and design. There are many different features any person can take advantage of and it remains true to it's noise canceling capabilities, so get ready to tune people out. The only reason for the 4/5 stars is because it is so light weight (making it very comfortable) if someone wearing it where to be doing light house chores that required leaning over, there is a 80% chance of it just sliding off your head.

Stellar Sound & Features Combination
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've tried the Bose QuietComfort 35ii, the lesser Sony model CH700 and then I put these on and KNEW they were my headphones to stick with. The noise cancellation trumps the Bose, and the high-quality feel and level of comfort also edged out the Bose. Couldn't be happier.

Excellent upgrade from 1000XM2
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had the 1000XM2 before and I have to say this XM3 is much better for anyone who wears glasses. The extra padding, lighter materials, bigger opening for the ears inside really makes a difference. Battery, ANC, and sound quality are still excellent.

Combine this NC headphone with...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off...alone...these headphones are without a doubt the BEST NC headphones on the market! But I actually take it a step farther by using BOTH 'in ear' (passive NC) and 'over ear' (active NC) approach at the same time. If your goal is to block out as much distracting noise as possible...then grab yourself a pair of in-ear headphones (I use the excellent LG Tone Platinum Sport version) which go deep into the ear canal, and have a very low profile, and then top it off with these Sony ANC headphones for a double-whammy approach to eliminating that noisy passenger seated behind you! If you wanna listen to audio...just connect your in-ear to your device and enjoy your music, movie, audio book, etc. If I'm not as concerned about ambient noise...then I skip the in-ear headphones and just use these Sony headphones by themselves with or without ANC turned on.

Excellent quality
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The quality of these headphones is top notch, I own a pair of sony 950n over ear and jbl pair, no comparison. These are far and away at a different sound level. Bose are great, but if you like to experience your music at a louder bass rich level go with these.

Highly recommend
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love these headphones! They had a brief problem with crackling in one of the ears when using the noise-canceling feature which ticked me off, but luckily I waited long enough to take them back and they stopped so I think it was a software issue that got fixed in an update! I've been wearing these for several hours at a time while at college, listening to music, watching movies, and they're the most comfortable headphone I've had, and the app that comes with it lets you EQ them so you can play around with the bass which can be pretty fun. the only complaint that I have is that I wish there was a tad bit more padding on the top, but just moving the band to a slightly different spot on your head every couple of hours eliminates any uncomfort.
