The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. We are sorry if you feel uncomfortable using it after a couple of hours. The WH1000XM4 has a self-adjusting headband and soft cushioned earcups that cover the whole ear. You may try adjusting the headband slider so that they cover your ears. This will help give you more personalized comfort.
