Great, but better alternatives

Not the most comfortable, and the app is a bit confusing. Overall great, but I returned and bought Bose headphones instead. The pass-through sound is also not the best.

We regret to hear you're not having the best experience with these headphones and you find them uncomfortable during use. This is definitely not the experience we'd like to hear from you. Our WH-1000XM4 has a slider that you can use to adjust the length of the headband to get the best fit and for comfortable listening experience.
Note: If you put on the headset without adjusting the slider, the headset may not be positioned properly on your head, resulting in discomfort or a weak noise canceling effect.

You can also make few adjustments to your headphones settings to suit your needs. We recommend that you download the Sony Headphones Connect app. This will give you more control over your headphones and their performance.
It's also unfortunate that the unit had to be returned. We could've walked you through with some troubleshooting and offer assistance with our product.

Headaches, Multipoint Bluetooth functions poorly

Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.It worked fine, except when the Multipoint Bluetooth connection did not function that well, and it gave me a headache when wearing for more than a couple hours. I returned the product because of the headaches. Warning: if you have a smaller head, then this will be fine, otherwise stay away. The Multipoint Bluetooth connection was disappointing for a couple reasons: it switched connections too slowly for my taste, sometimes taking several seconds, and sometimes would not switch at all. The delay or failure would cause me to then have to rewind the podcast or other media I was playing so I could hear what was missed. Also, when multipoint was active, I had extreme microphone delays in Zoom calls. It was so bad that I was derailing the entire meeting and had to either disconnect the second device and reconnect to the call, or just not use multipoint. The sound and build quality was great. The noise cancellation was good, and the other gee-whiz features were good, except the Multipoint Bluetooth connection.

To ensure a comfortable fit and to use the unit for longer periods, please adjust the left and right slider. This unit also has super-soft, pressure-relieving earpads foamed urethane that evenly distributes pressure.
We appreciate your feedback about the issues you had with the multipoint connection feature. We suggest installing the latest firmware version of the unit to improve the general performance of the unit.

Amazing Noise Canceling

Insane comfort and noise cancelling

In fact, it is my 4th...and there is a reason for that. Two of the 4 previous pairs have cracked where the ear cup meets the headband. Once on my EXTRA-BASS headphones and again with my WH-1000XM3 (aka "last year's model") cans. The XM4 are similarly designed but they do feel a bit more sturdy at the joints. [The EXTRA-BASS headphones were definitely made with inferior plastic parts and had a different cup/headband design compared to the XM4 so that is not an apples-to-apples comparison.] But... As noted, comfort and weight are stellar with these headphones. I have worn them all day at the office connected to the laptop listening to music or videos AND connected to the office phone ready for phone calls (more on that later). As a bald guy who sweats, normally the top of my head where the band rubs will start to get a bit sore after 4-5 hours or the actual pressure on the ears will get annoying. I could probably go all 30 hours without complaining about the fit. They are very soft, very light, very comfortable. And, as a bonus, while your ears will sweat if you are wearing them while exercising or in the hot sun, I have found them to breathe better than previous Sony cans. The headphones are feature-filled. I really like the "touch-pad" concept over physical buttons as well as the auto-pause feature when you take them off your head. Connecting to TWO bluetooths (blueteeth?) has been a nice bonus as well. As mentioned, I can pair these with my laptop for music/Zoom/YouTube enjoyment and still have my phone ring through without need to take the headphones off or switch headsets. When using them to Zoom or talk on the phone, people have not complained about my vocal quality so I would assume all is good there. I am a big Google Assistant user so having that functionality in the headset is also nice. The Sony app is robust with tons of customizable settings including some auto-sensing features to make setup and preferences easier. Plus the app has an equalizer, but... ...but I am having difficulty tuning the audio in to my liking compared to my other Sony headphones--specifically my non-noise cancelling XB700s. Don't get me wrong, the XM4 cans have some great sound out of the box but some of the tunes I listened to initially (Pearl Jam and other 80s/90s rock and punk rock) seemed to fall a bit flat out-of-the-box. Tweaking the EQ helped but I still don't think the mid- and hi-range sounds pop as crisply as I am used to. [*This could also be an issue with streaming service compression as my music provider just changed.] Depth (i.e. "bass") however is very controllable and strongly represented in these headphones. What I like about the bass is you can really pull out the strong, rumbling bass in today's alt or club mixes (i.e. Missio or twenty-one Pilots) but also grab tight bass from hip-hop or old school rap. I trust that any "muddiness" I sense (which could be psychological) with mid/hi tones will eventually be resolved with the proper tweaking of the EQ. Noise cancelling in the XM4 is outstanding. I have no idea how all that voodoo magic works but Sony has figured it out. I am insanely impressed by what I *don't* hear. And after all, that is what you buy noise cancelling headphones for: To block out the ambient noise and really enjoy the richness of the audio pumped to your ear. These headphones are strong contenders for "Best of the Year." If I treat them well and don't crack them, they should bring years of satisfying use.

We're glad that you like the sound quality of the headphones. It's unfortunate that you are not having the best experience with the noise canceling function. Make sure to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance.
The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off. Check the setting of the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. When the Adaptive Sound Control is turned on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient.

My main issue was fit. I originally bought the Beats headphones then tried these thinking that they were better. I found that they were loose and never really felt secure when they were on. The sound was perhaps slightly clearer, but they were lacking on bass.

Usage hours may be different depending on the settings and conditions of use. To conserve battery life, turn off the DSEE HX Auto or Equalizer setting on the Sony | Headphones Connect app. Note: The available battery life significantly decreases when these settings are used at the same time.

The first step to resolve this is to use the NC Optimizer function in the Sony Headphones Connect app, which calibrates the noise canceling for your specific fit and environment. Also, please check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off in the app, as this can sometimes cause intermittent sounds.

Major deal breaker when playing games like overwatch or call of duty. DOESNT SUPPORT TRRS CABLE. Microphone doesnt work using a wired connection Music playback and gaming without voice comms it is great. Disappointed that this isnt a headset that is flexible. Alot of the functionality is gimmicky and annoying at times.
